Camera aficionados, looks like it's time for the pre-PMA rumor mill to start churning. Our inaugural whisper this season comes care of a forum poster at d-spot.co.il, who according to
Canon Rumors' tipster has been accurate in the past (at this point we've been unable to corroborate). Here's the deal: a
Canon 60D and Canon 550D / 600D (i.e.
Rebel series). Both apparently feature a 15.1 megapixel APS-C sensor, articulating screens, and 720p video at 30 frames per second. The 60D, however, can also claim 1080p footage -- odd that the Rebel doesn't, since the current
T1i has 1080p -- an electronic level, and a new battery and grip compared to its
50D successor. That one's apparently priced at around $1,190 and due out in May, while the other is $799 with no connection to a release date given. Make no mistake, between this and those
waterproof Sony point-and-shoots, this is only the beginning.
1Ds Mark IV please.... pretty pretty please.
Not entirely sure I understand the draw of the 550D over the 500D/T1i ...
Maybe it has a new Digic.
@DestrictoEnse
Thats a very good point. I purchased the 500d three weeks ago and it will be interesting to see what the new model will bring. Hopefully they wont forgot the 500d as it needs a firmware update for manual controls on video mode, because upgrade to the new model for that would be a mean of canon.
@DestrictoEnse
Heck, I haven't yet replaced my 20D. In the low end, I don't feel that Canon gives people any real motivation to upgrade. The 7D was what I think the 50D needed to be (sans video). Their lower-end body lineup and refresh strategy is getting old, IMO.
Me neither. Still got the 20d going strong. Was tempted to upgrade to the 5dmk2. But who knows with the 7d getting two digic processors what's going to happen next. I know one this for sure. The land of the cropped I need to exit
@DestrictoEnse
Well... Obviously the articulating screen.
Believe me, for some people, that's a major selling point (I know a lot more people have bought Nikon D5000s of late than Canon 500/450Ds)
@CJ yep, everynow and then I know id kill for an articulating screen for low level macro shots. much better than getting dirty laying down.
@ DestrictoEnse
Oh god, so am I.
But live view is the way the wind is blowing, of late.
Besides, the viewfinders low-to-mid range cameras are mirrorboxes, and I can't stand 'em.
Will you be able to fold the screens??
I'm not sure what the difference between a 60D and a 7D will be, other than the megapixel count. I wonder if the 60D will have slightly better low light performance than the 7D due to the lower megapixel count. It also may have a slightly smaller body. Would be great if the 60D also had support for an external monitor/control for video. It also may have the new sensor technology that reverses the sensor so the light intake is higher.
@jamesstringer 7D has dual Digic
was about to purchase another 50d..looks like I will wait.
i hope this isn't true, canon needs to add autofocus for video mode, 1080p 24/25/30fps and a microphone in jack if not i won't be upgrading from my 400d.
last week i bourght a 5dMkII, upgrading from a very old 30D... So glad to be out of the land of cropped sensors, & even if canon released a 5dmkIII 2mrw I'd care little 'cause i am so happy with my new gear.
Honestly the 600D looks like it has everything I wanted. (Well maybe a lower price.) As long as it has auto focus for video it should be fine. Manual audio would be nice but if it just has a simple mic in like the 7D it should be fine.
I really want a 7D. However, I will probably be looking at these as well. Both seem like excellent cameras.
@Special Agent Steve
And all I ever wanted was peace in the Middle East...
(... and a blowjob)
About time too. If Canon are to take HD video seriously with their DLSRs, then you need manual controls (fixed on the 5DII now, and 7D), and articulating screens to see what you're doing. I certainly couldn't take half the shots I do with my GH1 with a fixed screen.
I don't care so much for video on the Rebels. Good HD camcorders are so affordable now.
The 7D is lovely, but not the price tag for still-amateurs.
The 60D is priced perfectly but a lack of 1080p24 would be extremely disappointing. And I'd hope there better be a slot for an external microphone.
I really don't need more than 15MP, 6fps is fine, lesser-point AF is also fine!
