Apple iPad announcement inspires amazing dessert http://bit.ly/c99Ejn
@unitas please vote this jackass down everyone
NO. Bad engadget. No more articles.
I want to know about Captain Insano, the http://twitter.com/jason fellow who is "Founder of Weblogs, Inc., TechCrunch50, Silicon Alley Reporter, Engadget & Mahalo.com"
did he go crazy? Last night he said he had the iPad with a unicorn list of Apple tablet features. It looks like he was caught in his lie today, only now he says he's got "iPad 2.0" Do you report to this wacko?
@timecenter ok, back to the topic here!
iphone wins for now!
it atleast lets me make a call and i dont need to fear dropping it so easily, i can carry my iphone anywhere i want (without fearing dropping/ losing it), can i do that with an ipad, NO
who buys a mobile device without a webcam these days?
next event i am waiting for is the hp tablet event! looked much better...
@timecenter
How bout copy and paste? Does it have an optional mouse as well?
optional blu-ray burner?
usb and firewire?
We have a winner...
The "best" crap gadget ever!
Thanks Steve. You did it... The Newton 2... FAIL !
@timecenter
well there you have it. no usb, no webcam, no flash, barely anything new over iphone OS... but hey, you can run all your touch apps in overstretched glory on the ginormous screen :D! its just... its SO MAGICALLllllllllllllllllllllllllll no.
iphone wins.
@timecenter - "Shipping in 60 days" and on the 70th day Geoh0tz the Sith Lord STRIKES!! Jailbreaking and freeing it from its fruity prison ;^)...
@djalal
The "best" crap gadget ever! ......and that's being VERY polite.
Redundant, sameole-sameole, * YAWN*
Way way way overpriced.
My carrier free EeePC still a bargin @ $299 and ain't gotta rub me
fingers all over it
@CharlieX
Ipad basically is a oversize Iphone that can't called.
@unitas So apple put like an inch of Bezel on this thing and basically when the 2nd Gen iPad comes out its gonna use the same housing but have a 1.5-2" bigger display (less bezel), more memory, front facing camera, new 3G plans that may include voice teathering capability to existing iphone customers and raise the price by like $2-300.
Well damn!
@skyblaze
You forgot about iWork, iBooks, and no contract 3G, not to mention the keyboard dock. Also, you actually want Flash? Seriously? Have you not heard of HTML 5?
@Frankenstein Black
500 dollars and you're going to jailbreak it for what? to do exactly what a netbook can do? now serioiusly...
@djalal : LOL, agreed.
@Frankenstein Black HAHA fruity prison xD
Well, maybe they will find an exploit, but with new hardware comes new APIs, including undocumented ones. Sure, they can probably get Cydia on it within a few weeks on finding an exploit, but iPad apps utilizing the coolest features may take a little longer.
On another note, I wonder how powerful the thing actually is. The iTouch 3G could run at 833mhz (thats the intended speed of the processor, though it is underclocked) if the processor was unlocked, and the gpu allows playback of 1080p video. I want to see some 1080p video running on this thing. It would be funny if my iPod was more powerful than the new iPad...
It's official. Apple has gone insane.
@techlord
Your high school English teacher would be so mad at your comment...
@unwynd
I think Apple did the right thing here, pitching this as a casual device to pick up and do common things comfortably, without having to go and sit at a computer or have a hot chunky laptop on your lap!
Especially with the flurry of PC tablet computers that have hit the market in the last few months (trying to beat Apple to the punch) those companies kinda look silly now because they are all competing with each other and with other devices like laptops etc.
This will sit nicely on my coffee table which will allow me to have a quick glance at the net from the couch with little effort.
When the parents come round, I can hand it to them to look through the latest photo's of the kids.
I can give one to my Dad to get him on-line, so he can surf the net and use email finally with a simple device, without him having to know a load of stuff about computers that he doesn't need to know.
I know people that spend double the price of the iPad on Harmony remotes for example, I predict some slick universal remote software to come out.
That's just some reasons why I think this will be useful, I mean its going to cost around £300, peanuts!
At that price bracket, you could quantify the device for just one of those applications like the universal remote idea. The kindle ebook reader is around £250 I think!
I think people need to get some perspective on where Apple pitched this device before they start complaining it doesn't have laptop type features, that's not where Apple wanted it to contend, which makes complete sense because everyone would then be complaining, "I can't replace my laptop with this without a proper keyboard...blah...blah".
@unwynd, I have to agree here. Honestly, I want to love the iPad. I could see myself using this for video and general Intraweb surfing, but then again, that's why I have my iPhone! I'm not paying a monthly contract for nothing!
I could definitely see this as a really awesome gift for my niece or nephew, however. It's a pretty simple and easy-to-use device. For now, I can't justify owning one myself.. *crosses fingers for iPhone 4.0 down the road*
@Mr Death
I can't help but agree; it's not their best.
@drh I couldn't agree more. This is aimed at a specific purpose, a niche. Most of the geek community are just pissed that we are not the niche at which it is aimed, and that's understandable as we love our gadgets. This is a great device for surfing casually and checking mail and whatnot. It would be perfect gifts for my parents and the like. They do NOT need laptops. Most people I know that would use it wouldn't need the 3G version either. As for not having a camera or phone, every single person complaining about that knows damn well they would NEVER walk around taking pictures with this nor would they hold it to their ear. Yes a forward facing webcam would be ideal for conferencing, but alas what can you do other than complain as loud as you can on the World Wide Whine.
Everyone was just expecting the next coming of the iPhone. Well, that's coming in, you guessed it, the next coming of the iPhone. To label something crap because YOU have no use for it is silly.
@etrnldrk
Don't insult him, he didn't graduate from middle school. ; )
@skyblaze
Thank you
@techlord
or take pictures. Ipad is too big and made for book reading people.
@Swampdog thank you thank you thank you. Perfect comment. This iPad was not for the super tech savy. It's not a supersmart phone or a supersmart tablet. It was made to be an extension of your current tech gear-- for all the times the iphone isnt big enough and you cant drag your iMac into the living room. I think its perfect for what it does. The problem is that most people dont realize what it does. They just keep looking at what it doesn't
@cswright For sure, Steve Jobs released one of the best Tablet as for this moment, but seeing its flaws -- surely, made the impression that it really didn't 'beat' its contenders (Kindle/Netbook devices) At least on this model. Maybe, if they will release a 2G model, these disadvantages will be eliminated, but then again that begs the question.. Why should we buy this half-baked tablet, if 2G will be better? ..
In the end, it'll be up to your preferences and budget if you're going to have the iPad. More Details: http://bit.ly/apple-ipad-under-fire
@Jack: This just shows how clueless most of the readers here are. You bring up good points, but since you think this iPad is a good product, you get modded down into oblivion. I guess that's the easiest way of dealing with someone who actually has a good point.
What this site needs in addition to comment rating system is a score card of predictions. That way, you could look at someone's comment and have some idea of how clueless they are when it comes to predicting how well a product will do. Would be quite a funny feature.
iPhone pwns iPhat.
@drkschmoog Lenovo IdeaPad U1 pwns both..
iPhone wins - flawless victory.
Exactly!
BTW Engadget, how many separate iPad posts do you guys need?!
@CharlieX "leave my torso alone at least. Geez"
@hastings
The portability of the iphone is what puts it ahead of the ipad imo.
I can't see the ipad replacing the laptop in my backpack for school either. Probably best for people who spend most of their day at home.
@Voss
14/20 on the first page, as of now. and at one point, 12 in a row.
@hastings
*iPad was created*
Whoopies!
I'm underwhelmed by this "messiah"
@horchata Me too, it's nothing new or revolutionary.
@horchata
Why was this even hyped, and why do they think it's better than a netbook?
@Valicore
Take the portability of an iphone > get rid of that
Take the telephony of an iphone > get rid of that
What do you have?
@(Unverified)
The way I see it, what you're getting is a bigger screen to play bejeweled on
@horchata
you dont understand man, its "magical" and "revolutionary"
iRangers Transform!
And this requires a separate post.. because?
@TruUnknowN
Because it's mandated that the entire front page of Engadget is filled with Apple only posts on the day their savior, Lord Jobs, speaks.
I could be wrong though.
@phobic99
TruUnknowN: sounds about right.
Minimalistic in both style and features... just not on price.
It's an unfair match.
It should be up against an iPod Touch.
@Arkv2
Well the iPad does have 3g...
@oproski
The 3G model only
