Your favorite
ill-defined smartphone accessory is back, this time teasing us with talk of external speaker support (via mini audio jack) and wireless audio transmission. We did wonder
why the Nexus One dock would have a Bluetooth connection when the phone already has one of its own, and the trick seems to be that the dock will act as the conduit through which the Nexus will transmit music wirelessly to your nearest set of banging sound thumpers. Simple, yes, but also rather liberating for your
Eclair-sporting device. Makes that
$45 price seem all the more reasonable, no?
Bring it on... I'm ready to order one or two of them :)
That will make them chunky... or there going to be crap speakers to make it small. Cause you know that if it's got good sound and its not a fat turd, it's going to cost you.
@n0ne it has an external speaker jack - i very much doubt there would be speakers built-in.
@humanerror
ah, true. To bad, that be kinda neat. :/
How does this relate to the Apples new iTablet?
@lsx
I think you'll find that on such an auspicious day, reference is implicit, acknowledged and simply does not require further elucidation.
@lsx Ahahahhaahhah, I love an early morning chuckle!
If that dock was a car dock there might be a reason for the second Bluetooth radio: Keeping the car's navigation/etc systems paired to the dock instead of a phone that might move between cars and might lose its' pairing info along the way.
Instead, the dock can just sit in the car and you can plug-and-go without hassles.
So this is my take. The nexus one, does not have a dock connector, just a MicroUSB. That is not exactly going to be friendly to plug in to the dock for charging, let alone music playback. The phone already has Bluetooth, so why not make a wireless dock. I would assume it would come with an induction charging battery for the phone, and you just cradle the device, Sans connectors and it charges as well as is capable of Audio playback.
The thing that makes me think this the most, is the clock app that comes loaded on the Nexus One. It really works best in landscape mode, and works as a nice alarm clock, especially when dimmed (OLEDs are awesome for that). The thing is, with the MicroUSB on the bottom, and the audio jack on the top, a horizontal dock would be challenging unless it is wireless. I am not much for docks, but I would certainly buy one that makes the N1 an awesome alarm clock.
@RandomGuy
Think you're probably wrong there..
The Nexus does have three gold connectors on the base, the function of which is currently not known. They could easily be used as an audio connection of some sort.
Induction charging would be of no value in a vertically oriented cradle. By the time you've sat the thing in there, the best way to hold it still is to put something through the usb jack. It would also require swapping out the battery for one with induction circuitry. That reduces life, and increases cost.
The alarm clock app looks just fine vertically too. Everything we've seen in terms of line drawings, and also the text of the attached articles indicates that the dock is vertical.
Hijacking this thread somewhat, does anyone have any recommendations on bluetooth stereo speakers? They don't seem to be that easy to come across in the UK (on the high street, at least, anyway)
Either that, or a cheap, but decent quality receiver dongle thing, that I can plug into some existing speakers/hifi
