3D TV coming to British pubs this weekend, can expect chilly reception
Imagine, if you will, the quintessential British pub. A pair of elderly chaps sitting in the quiet corner discussing their best Spitfire manoeuvers, the teenage whippersnapper putting on a mature voice and trying to buy alcohol at the bar, and the inevitable legion of sports fans setting up for their weekly life or death football match. Now put 3D glasses on 'em -- doesn't work, does it? Sky TV is hoping its launch of 3D content around UK drinking establishments will be a runaway success, whereas we're just hoping those glasses aren't too hard to clean up after being inevitably discarded with disdain. Nine pubs will be broadcasting the Arsenal versus Manchester United match in 3D this Sunday, with a full rollout in April.

They look a little too happy....
Does anyone know which pubs are showing it?
Oh and by the way, that photo paints quite a tame picture of what the atmosphere could be like. I remember watching the same fixture 2 years back in a pub in Camberwell, manu led most of the game, arsenal equalise in the last 5ish minutes, all hell broke loose. Arsenal supporters bouncing off the walls screaming throwing tables and chairs about etc.
@Mark S They made a point of not telling which pubs the trial is in fearing it would lead to overcrowded pubs. But if I remember correctly the pubs are in London (4), Manchester (2), Edinburgh, Dublin and Cardiff.
@rodvand
Yeah I heard. Was hoping someone might have some inside info about where they might be located. Actually thinking about it, Sports Cafe on Haymarket in Central London might be a good guess. There aren't a huge amount of pubs that show sports in HD in the first place so that does narrow it down somewhat.
Probability of those TV's not being covered in sick after a few hours.... very low.
You don't need 3D vision, you've got alcohol - the best special effects generator out there.
OKAY THATS A NICE JOKE

I LOVE CAPS LOCK TOO
@Herbaceous Border Patrol WE ALL DO, YUP!

@bureX Alcohol, spearheading augmented reality since 10,000 B.C.

@travisonfire
yeaaaaaaa go gunners .....
@travisonfire
Oh hell no.
@travisonfire Oh dear, what a pity, never mind.
i recently saw a couple of football games with Manchester United and all i have to say is god damn. Do most british teams play like brutes?
Fouls every 4 minutes
@LMLYP If you want gentlemen's game try cricket ;)
@LMLYP You obviously don't watch soccer so keep quiet. The sport can actually get physical. The Manu bs arsenal is going to be an awesome match.
@Gonzonogi
actually i was comparing it to the other countries.
i usually watch the world cup and so i compare it to other teams.
@Gonzonogi
Physical! Football! lol, Try Rugby you tart.
I love the UK! :)
Read the whole post in a Manchester accent.
@Anthop i read it like Karl Pilkington, the round headed-Manc.
Alright.
@Anthop I 'ave a Manc accent! :)
Yet another reason to view the game in a pub :)
On a more serious note. Sports like hockey, basketball and football etc. are perfect for 3D. It really adds to the experience when you can determine angles better and get a better feeling for the game.
there showing the 6 nations in 3d too, but only in cinema's. I wont be able to have a beer :(
I heard a rumor the iPad is going to come out with 3D in 2012. OMG, start the articles now!
Nice to see a US site refering to the game as Football and not Soccer, as it should be :)
@autopilot Christ I only just noticed that! Am I dreaming?.....
@autopilot It's because Vlad is based in London!
They need to get some designers to make fancy glasses. If everyone in a bar is wearing those ugly shades, its going to look like a cult.
@Korova Pamplona http://www.gunnars.com/
Dear lord do people really think british pubs are like that? (I know sarcasm, but come on, boozy Britain et al)
But seriously, 3D football? Oh dear, add that to the "half time round" of drinks and already riled up fans and frankly I'll be glad if the floor is wipe clean, or at least... non slip...
@thelongmile
Eh, my local IS just like that!
@Jimbob I have to be honest, my local resembles something along the lines of "who can punch the most people" and chav infested. I would long to see this mythical stiff upper lip posh nosed pub that Americans seem to think of...
Foolish move. For one, 3d glasses are not particularly comfortable. for another, i cant think of many - if any - people I know who'd happily sit in a pub with stupid big uncomfortable glasses on. the p!ss taking would be unbearable.
besides which, as soon as the first few dozen batches of glasses have been nicked/broken/barfed on, the pub's will surely think it's not worth the effort.
sky should try reducing their prices to get more customers instead of this
IMHO, anyway
Unlike NetFlix in the US where you get at least some HD content for free, Sky charge big bucks for their HD service in the UK.
They have also pretty much maxxed out their user base so they are trying hard to gain revenue by pushing whatever they can. Since you need HD to get 3D, this is no more than a money making scheme for Sky. If they can 3D sell to a few hundred pubs then they hope that millions of people who see 3D at the pub will rush out and order it for home.
Just fyi guys, some (and I stress some) UK pubs are not refined and genteel places these days. Violence and vomiting is very common in some pubs whilst nice people (like me :)) frequent olde worlde watering holes and get legless most weeks.
Do we know what the 9 pubs are? I may go have a look.
Until they run out of glasses and half the pub can't make out what's on the screen and it all kicks off.
[sarcasm] Can't wait to see a 3D Wayne Rooney [/sarcasm]
@cadmium910
3D ROONEY, THE REALISM WILL BE BLOWING ME AWAY AT 640p!
Seriously, the Joiner's Arms needs to get a new TV rig.
I hope these pubs are using the cheap polarized glasses like in the cinemas because I can see on any given night 30% of them going missing or getting broken. Anyway 3D is just another excuse to slap a huge premium on Sky customers.
except for 3d to work you need to be exactly in the front of the screen. going from the side and not looking at it dead-on ruins the effect...won't work good in a pub
This should be banned, aren't beer goggles risky enough?
I've never understood the incredibly ignorant 3D comments from Engadget. "we're just hoping those glasses aren't too hard to clean up after being inevitably discarded with disdain".
