We wouldn't rate the ability to tune FM radio highly on our wishlist of missing features on
Motorola's CLIQ, but nonetheless an Android tweaker by the name of Eugene has figured out how to deliver it. The necessary receiving hardware for pulling down the Weekly Top 40 was actually there all the time, Eugene just needed some binary files -- and to believe. Once he believed hard enough, clapped his hands, and copied over those files, presto he was groovin'. He hasn't released a working version of his tweak to the world just yet, but we presume that will be coming soon enough.
as soon as he figures out how he did it? (:
Droid Does? Or really, Droid better (as in, someone better hack an FM radio on the droid)
WTF does this have to do with the I-pad?
@kj4gr
LMFAO! I knew today's Engadget would be filled with that blasted iPad. Just when I thought I couldn't get enough iPhone this and iPhone that... now its a double wammy.
I took your comment as sarcasm and LMFAO. Thanks for the morning chuckle.
I guess I don't understand why they put and FM receiver in the phone without allowing users to access it. Was it too expensive to create a program to use FM, or they just intended on doing something with it in the future?
bluetooth and/or wifi chip they used already comes with FM. they just didnt care enough to enable it.
@(Unverified)
Seems stupid they had a feature sat there and just left it? unless the reception is just so bad they left it?
@(Unverified) It's entirely likely T-Mobile didn't want it, or it caused some other problems. Cool that this guy found it and turned it on, though.
@cashclientel : If the chip they used is already sold in volume, it would probably cost MORE to get a customized version without the FM feature.
yawn...
n900 still pwns them all.. ipad included
FM tuner on Eris please?
Is that even possible?
That's great and all but what I want on my Cliq is eclair!
please someone unlock it on the Ipod Touch
@Bud92
When did iPod get Android? Oh ya, it didn't. You lose. You strayed from your other iPhone lemming. This is an Android topic. Run along.
As a Motorola CLIQ owner this is relevant to my interests.
@(Unverified) Don't do me any good for local stuff, though. :)
Eugene rocks!
It seems that maybe they left it locked so that they could release it as a future update when they get around to tweaking it.
The nexus one also has an FM chip. hopefully someone figures out how to use it to listen to the radio, or even netter, transmit your music to your car!
I never understood why FM radio isn't enabled on most phones in this country. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that most phones in Asia (specifically Japan and Korea) have that feature built in. It seems that the hardware is pretty much already inside most phones, it just isn't enabled.
I know that it's not a huge deal, but then again, it's nice to have that as an option... sometimes you just get sick of the same MP3s over and over again. Or you want to hear the news.
I believe it is a transceiver, so it would be cool to be able to utilize the chip to create (even a half-assed) FM transmitter for use in a car.
Thoughts?
@POZ According to Broadcom's site http://bit.ly/8IOLwv it's only an FM receiver. Bummer, because that would have been really cool.
Hope some nice hackers using the Nexus One please find a way to enable the Broadcom BCM4329 WiFi/FM transmit/receive chipset so that we call use the FM transmitter and FM radio function.
Meh. FM is overrated. I mean, the iPad doesn't have it. What more proof do you need?
