Little too late for honesty. They presented a product with capabilities it did not have. Probably just to entice customers it would not have otherwise.
It's like the newspapers printing a retracting a week later on the 6th page in small print.
@Sofabutt: Ahh, internet logic at its finest. They don't correct, and they're dishonest; they do correct and it's too little too late. Perhaps you think that because of what was probably a simple (but embarrassing) mistake, they should cancel the iPad, sell their assets, and shut down Apple entirely?
Really, if anything, there is no way Apple gains from this. Even if it were to go unnoticed and gain a few more sales, there would be that much more outcry for Flash support in the end, which it seems Apple does very much not want. I am surprised they are even showing pages that use flash rather than emphasizing all the pages that don't.
Since when does flash not suck, anyway? There are far better alternatives if you actually want an open platform.
It makes more sense that it was not a mistake and that Apple was being purposely deceptive. It's not like when they shot the footage the first time someone could have accidentally turned the flash function on, since it never existed. How do you accidentally show your device doing something it isn't capable of? A lot of time went in to producing those videos in the first place and I'm sure Apple went over every frame with a fine-tooth comb to make sure the device appeared capable of what we saw the first time around.
@Sofabutt dude, get a friggin life.....the product doesn't ship for two months! did you get pissed off at any promotion msft did for vista....cuz i can guarantee they said nothing but nice things about their shiny new OS despite it being a gigantic pile of fail.
They will add flash down the road and boast about their innovative genius.
Now we have added applications! Now with SMS! Now with flash on our netbook killer! Now with a camera! Now with video! and maybe by the 3rd gen - the ultimate... a freakin usb port.
Apple's website has no Flash. I used ClickToFlash to see or not see Flash at a time and place of my choosing. There are no Flash block boxes on Apple's website when I visit it, even for the videos.
@Sofabutt I disagree the iPad is targeted to the people who don't even know what flash is so they will never notice or read any blogs. I see it aimed to replace ANY paper or photographs you might have in your livingroom. Imagine this as a VERY expensive universal remote! Some rich guys will buy it just for this very reason.
If you look at the keynote when jobs is going on the saved addresses you can see that Lego image somewhere you need to look closely. He zooms in on purpose so the people that are there watching won't see it.
@yakapo Why does this need a USB adapter? It's actually good that apple doesn't include components to make it compatible with every current standard. This is what keep windows and other established OSs from making revolutionary leaps in each version. Maintaining support for these types of things, along with "legacy apps" act as anchors that inhibit real progress. Woudn't you rather look forward to Bluetooth 3.0, or have them implement a wireless USB 3.0 chip in a later version? I think the positives outweigh the negatives in this decision.
@xclntgig By , oh, I guess I've had it wrong all this time!...every one should just stop supporting standards, great idea! All cameras should have different data cards, all music players must use unique encoding, heck, why do all power cables end in the same two or three prong combinations, and while were at it bring back HD DVD, there is too much compatiblity going on here! Standards develop, without USB 1.0, how do you get USB 3.0? U fanbois are danm funny, even if the ipad came boxed with herpies, ud all be on here talkin bout how great it feels too scratch the legions, and we are all jealous of ur icream.
@Sofabutt I like the fact they remade the video. It's honest- even if you say it's an admission too late. The part I like better? The part where Apple comes back with a video the day after Adobe says: look at all the sites iPad can't do with our crappy software- Apple says "I don't care- we want better standards, even if we have to go without for a SHORT while (we all know this'll light a fire under HTML5's ass).
@Malkmus hey bro. My assumption about the mistake is that because marketing commercials field is different from the actual development field, they may have used false assumptions for their add assuming that it did... or just being normal media... exaggerating... what ever. its no big deal.
If Microsoft pulled a stunt like this, they would be eviscerated and rightly so. If you put out bogus video of what your product can do then that is plain out fraud, period. This is something that a company like Apple should simply not allow to happen. There should be more vetting and oversight than that.
Fortunately someone somewhere is paying attention.
@oGMo If Apple really wanted an open platform then they wouldn't use .H264 for their HTML5 video playback. Firefox only supports the open Og Theora for their video tag, Safari only supports the proprietary .h264. Until that gets solved and one codec becomes standard, Flash's cross-browser/format support will keep it relevant.
@Banksta3 There are many reasons why apple doesn't want to have their iDevices, geting a flash.. Some reasons which won't be disclosed fully to the public. But, yes I concur, that somehow flash should be embrace by apple.. I mean, there are so many times I want to view/play flash media on my iPhone, but can't because of this lack... Flash hasn't sucked since Actionscript 2 came out. Flash is an INCREDIBLE tool for doing *light* coding work. The problem is that most people make awful applications. But that's part of the beauty of it; like html, it's very flexible. You can use awful html coding, and the browser picks up the slack though. Flash isn't as simple, since your CPU often needs to compensate, and it doesn't always come out great.
Still, having simple browser-based games and real-time applications through Flash are beautiful, and you probably use and depend on them more than you are aware.
@m4gast0n Well said. As a Flash (Actionscript 3) developer, I find it to be an incredibly flexible and productive language if used intelligently. I've never enjoyed video in flash, so I welcome HTML 5 open video. But there is still so much more to flash than video. Take Papervision3D library for example. I'm not sure that the Canvas tag can combine 3D, sound, and interactivity the way that Flash can in this instance.
You're absolutely right! Lack of Flash support killed the iPhone....oh wait, no it didn't. It's the most successful mobile device ever released!
No one needs Flash. Its a resource hog and security liability. Those are both proven and well-known facts!!! I still don't understand why everyone bitches and complains about Flash. Most of the websites that are heavy Flash have released App versions to allow their iPhone/iPad consumers to view all of their content (ex. CNN, FoxNews, Break, YouTube, etc....even HULU is developing a iPhone/iPad app to view all of their Flash-driven material). Bottom-line, the web is moving toward HTML 5 and Flash will not be missed!
I love the "Flash is on 90% of the websites" argument! That's the same shitty argument from Windows owners afraid to abandon software and programs (IE, Windows Media Player, etc...) only because it's been forced down everyone's throats the last 20 years. There is much superior software and hardware out there, but if you must follow the masses, go right ahead. I'll enjoy the thousands of innovative products and software out there!
@leviteith Most websites that have a lot of video coded in Flash, have an App that allows you to view their content. Therefore, Flash is not missed in any way by me!
@oGMo Ipad (and iphone and ipod touch users) all want flash (well maybe some aren't losing sleep over it, but given the choice they'd rather have it than not). Adobe certainly want it, Adobe have flash ready to go on the iPlatform and are eternally pointing out that it's Apple blocking them. Can't think of too many other platform owners that actually go out of their way to block functionality (other than the console platforms).
The device is aimed at gamers and TV watchers, generating a 3D image with use of a pair of 0.7-inch OLED panels, which each display separate images, doing away with the ghost imagery that often comes along with 3D displays.

@Banksta3 !no flash - no life!
@Banksta3 I say its a win because they are at least being honest and getting rid of their false advertising.
@werty1432k
Little too late for honesty. They presented a product with capabilities it did not have. Probably just to entice customers it would not have otherwise.
It's like the newspapers printing a retracting a week later on the 6th page in small print.
Their honesty is for shit...
@Sofabutt its actually never too late for a company to come clean or fix a mistake.
@Sofabutt It's not at all similar to that. Not 1 single iPad has been sold yet. It was an honest mistake. Horrible analogy.
@Sofabutt: Ahh, internet logic at its finest. They don't correct, and they're dishonest; they do correct and it's too little too late. @werty1432k
BS
Obviously they had the intention of fooling the public to begin with. They only came clean because somone called them on it.
@Sofabutt How do you know that for sure? Do you work for Apple? Did Jobs tell you that? Don't assume things.
@werty1432k

All those who bought one better go and claim a refund or speak to trading standards.
@yakapo
The iPad already has a USB port.
@MacSmiley
hate to break it to you but... no it doesn't.
@Banksta3
hahahahaha that was the best use of pun I've seen in awhile
@Sofabutt I disagree the iPad is targeted to the people who don't even know what flash is so they will never notice or read any blogs. You just said it was good to inhibit real progress. What are you, a caveman? Seriously, that was the dumbest thing I've ever read.
@kyphem
Who doesn't know what flash is? Even if there are some people who don't know WHAT flash is, that doesn't mean they don't use it...

Also, on another note. They just launched the UK page for the iPad and the Flash is still there...

Agree
Very Disappointed in Apple again, iPad should seriously be called "iFail"
@Banksta3 Steve Job's says Abobe is lazy and that's why it's not ever going to be in iPhone OS. Check it out here:

Do people buy iPhones to mainly surf the web?
@Evan
Now that makes the lego people cry.
'Oh please don't link our product to the ipad' they must be crying out over there in denmark.
@Banksta3 Apple Blows...
The reason it's not there is because Apple don't want it to be there. The reason Apple don't want it to be there as it would cut into their revenues.

@oGMo Apple and it's products are the last things you should be defending if you like open platforms. I'm jus' sayin' ...
@oGMo And of course, NOT using flash gives Apple credibility in terms of the "open platform" it's always implementing in its products.
