iPad UI gets ported to the iPhone and iPod touch
At this particular point, 50-something days away from the earliest iPad deliveries, we doubt too many people are up in arms about the iPad's ability to act as a jumbo iPhone. On the other hand, if we told you you can take pretty much the entire iPad experience and distill it down to your iPhone OS device, well you'd probably care a lot more, wouldn't you? To get that extra 3D flavor to your UI, including the fetching iBooks shelf and other iPad-specific touches, you'll need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, access to the Cydia app store, and the manpower to click past the break for the full instructional video. Come on, you know you want to.

wow...you just gave me another reason not to buy one
@EI8HT Somewhere Steve Jobs is jumping a shark on the back of an iPad.
@EI8HT
For a reason not to do this, check out the guy's battery indicator :O
@formetopoopon
lolz
@s1xtyn1n3 - wow, 49% to 37% in 9 minutes... that's 80% per hour!
@EI8HT
pretty much.
I don't understand why Engadget finds this thing so special.
The iphone is a fine device that already did all of the things this ipad does.
That said, I expect the HP slate and Windows Mobile 7 to have this kind of coverage :)
Oh, who am I kidding...
@EI8HT F1 music FTWWWWW!!!!!!!
@EI8HT
So, the iPhone can multitask now?
/aren't i funny
@YourDaddy
Yup, the iPhone's been able to multitask ever since it was first jailbroken
/you probably knew that already
The iPad isn't a bad device per se. I'd love to have one, it looks fun. It just isn't the likely product of 20+ years of development, and does not cater for computer-users, just for media consumers who might be tempted by the occasional book.
Apple's tablet computer has yet to be made, this is just an iPod on steroids.
@ScottishDan
yeah and my Nintendo can play HD since I modded it into an HTPC.
Stop being such a smartass.
@s1xtyn1n3
Wow, U just gave me a reason to buy one(iPad)
@Chris Aubeck
yep, apple has yet to make a tablet computer. Or the iPad is really it, and that's all there is.
@indeed Yes, because their mobile browsing UI is so spectacular. Bing it on!
@kisai
I see what you did thar.
@000000
Well that's good because it has a 9.7" screen :)
@kisai
Are you talking about IE on winmo?
If so... Yeah, it sucks. That's why I use Opera and there are quite a few others I can try.
Isn't it wonderful to have options? :)
But I do understand being able to choose what you want to do/use scares some people off and so they settle with a product that decides for them.
It may be an ugly OS but, from what I can tell, its versatility is only matched by Android .
"iPhone and iPod touch get iPad UI Theme"
There, I fixed the title. :|
@pomokey Maybe you should look at the clock on his iphone it's 49 to 37 from 8:32 to 9:07
That's 20% and hour for what is most likely constant use, on wifi and 3G, and we don't know how old his iphone is or the state of the battery.
Don't think that the time in a YT video corresponds to real life, or go back to elementary school if you can't count or tell time.
@EI8HT Its just a shitty theme..
@pomokey congrats on being an idiot.....check the time on his actual phone from beginning to end.
@indeed "That said, I expect the HP slate and Windows Mobile 7 to have this kind of coverage :)"
and winged unicorns will gallop down a rainbow shooting out of my ass.
@Billy
+1 for the content
-1000 for the music
I wanted to kick myself in the balls while hearing this... :-/
I think people need to calm down a bit whether they hate the iPad or just hate Apple. End of the day the iPhone is still the most gadget packed device on the market (iTunes/App store/hardware). I used Windows devices for years and craved everything Apple has put in the iPhone. From the simplicity of its function to its excellent looks, you have to respect what Apple has brought us Gadget Freaks. I started using Windows CE on a casio cassiopeia em500 and 5 devices later ended Windows reign on an O2 Orbit - Apple had pushed every boundary and still Apples competitors are struggling to release the next "iPhone killer". The iPad opens up a new type of market from the cheap, slow crappy netbooks. Does it matter if it runs a Mobile OS?? Not the slightest as long as it does what they buyer wants... a smooth OS, stable, plenty of software and most important trying something new. Predictable or not, what has the competition brought out? More crap that can't keep up with the build quality, functionality and good looks of Apple products.
@EI8HT
Google should print a sarcastic, full-page ad in the NYT congratulating Apple for finally getting a changeable background on their phones. Just like Apple did when Microsoft released their Windows OS.
@Chris Aubeck
Exactly. I'm not mentioning it again that(OK, I will...) people were expecting too much.
@EI8HT
I think the reason the A4 chip was designed in-house was to use hardware DRM like the PS3 does. If that is true, I don't need another reason
@s1xtyn1n3 Yeah, and then realise said battery drain is a moot point as he's browsing around Cydia, the app store and making a few tweaks in this video. That always drains the battery quickly on my 3G but that's no indication of "real world" battery life.
@EI8HT battery life, processor speed, and screen size. If you don't care about those things then yea, this will be fine. If you do....
If this is a winterboard theme im not impressed, if its a actual port then im very inpressed :)
@BubblegumBalloon thought the same thing... Winterboard sux (on a 3G)
@finnschi
I love winterboard but I also hate the fact that it slows down the iphone and drains more battery life.. even on a 3gs :/
@BubblegumBalloon It is just a Winterboard theme with the icons shrunk down a bit. Nothing has been ported... there are no "new" apps... he is just using the Classics reader and NY Times reader app from the app store. I think the point they are trying to make is that there isn't anything new, "magical" or "revolutionary" about the iPad. It's a big iPod touch.
@BubblegumBalloon Sadly, this is not a true port, more a collection of themes and some apps which mimic the iPad. That said, if it looks the same and acts the same, isn't it actually the same?
@BubblegumBalloon I completely agree. I watched about a third of the video before I realized this is just a Winterboard theme and a few apps. This video should have been about 30 seconds long, not 10 minutes. Seriously, the guy spends 30 seconds just showing off the NY Times app!
@BubblegumBalloon very misleading tittle.
@Drybonz I'm glad to see at least one person noticed that this is nothing more than a skin and some good looking apps -- that exist without all the jailbreak effort -- but 320x480 isn't 1024x768 and it will never be. Apple's always used too many superlatives, but that doesn't change the fact that the iPad is something different. I'd take a tablet running a mobile OS (so it's always quick and responsive) over a low-power netbook/tablet trying to run a desktop OS any day.
@thefugitive
That's because you're dumb.
anybody care to explain why you'd want to be reminded of the crippled OS that runs on the iPad?
with all the flurry of iPad posts, I'm starting to realize how stupid I really must be to not understand most of the posts on Engadget this past week \end sarcasm
All you had to do change the background.
@TheGM
Yeah exactly. It is as if painting a lexus with Ferrari paint and comparing it to a Ferrari. Useless Apple fans. And to everyone who thinks the iPad really is a innovation, read this: http://www.bukisa.com/articles/236306_why-the-apple-ipad-will-eventually-fail
You had three non-iPad articles before this. I was ready to stop coming here!
@Virus Cannon Wonder why they run all the iPad related posts? This is why: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/30/the-daily-roundup-heres-what-you-mightve-missed1/ because we wanna know.
@OCEAN CLAK I know... I just find it bizarre that people complain about all the Apple posts, as if the administrators of these blogs don't know what they're doing.
looks sweet.. i like the book app!
Interesting wondering if the future version of the regular Iphone OS will be more like the iPad one.
@AaronJones
The sad thing is that even though Apple COULD give you these extras, you KNOW they won't. It would hurt their iPad sales.
If you want them you will have to do it the Apple way and spend loads of money on a new device etc or jailbreak and sit in the naughty corner.
@thunderbollock
Finally, someone else who sees it. So I'm not crazy. Apple serves their products in underhanded ways. Its just how they are.
I hope the next iPhone update looks similar to this. Or at the very least allow more personalization (for those of us not game enough/too lazy to jailbreak...)
@Kvasiir
To lazy to jailbreak? U press one button "make it rain" and wait till the phone restarts...
done..
