So after reading the Non Apple News post I only have one question...
Where does it stop?
Can I have a non Android news website then? Or a non Windows Mobile news website?
Or even better no MS or Google news website.
Seriously Engadget this latest move of yours is not a good look. You're basically caving into the trolls. Lowlife people who have nothing better to do than bash and insult the editors (in case you forget YOURSELVES) day in and day out.
Why? Because you report Apple news....news that most of your readers want to read and learn about.
I have nothing against Palm or MS or Google. Yet those people who are bashing Engadget? They HATE Apple. They HATE Engadget. They HATE Joshua, Nilay and the rest of the fine staff at Engadget
Seriously why would you cave into such hositlity? Since when did an angry mob control what Engadget writers post about?
This is a sad day in Engadget history. I truly honestly feel that people who hate this site so much should just go saomewhere else and quit trolling.
No one is forcing you to read Engadget. You have NO RIGHT to attack an editor/writer because their post happened to include the words:
1) "iPad" 2) Apple 3) iPhone 4) Steve Jobs 5) MacOS
I know i cant believe Engadget will go over would change their entire website just to appease 16 commenters. They should have done a vote at least. Engadget you guys are showing weakness
Normally I'd agree but in this case this is a very small but vocal minority. And in addition it sets a DANGEROUS precedent.
Engadget is not run by you or me. I come here to read the news. If Engadget wasn't giving me what I wanted then I'd go somewhere else.
It's just that simple.
Engadget has DONE NOTHING WRONG here. Absolutely NOTHING. Yet they are being attacked left and right by a rabid pack of Apple haters who have no class and no decency. Not to mention no common sense.
Common sense tells a person that if you don't like where you're at you LEAVE.
@TheRogueFFAngel What are you a moron? You are saying you would rather not have people have a choice? Make people wade through 75% iPad posts to find information about other stuff, even when they have no interest in the iPad?
Almost all gadget blogs off an option to filter out a particular topic if it proves to be dominating or overwhelming, and the iPad posts certainly fit that topic. It is not like nobody is getting iPad news, it is that they have given you the option to bypass it all.
@TheRogueFFAngel Actually, it's kind of nice to be able to filter out an incessant stream of articles about any one product. The tag system used at gizmodo let's each person filter out posts based on any tag and can be very nice when a big event for any major product results in heavy coverage.
Although I agree with you somewhat (I was reading your comment in the voice of that girl who said "Leave Brittney Alone"), This is about the Kindle: not the iPad or Apple.
The Kindle is pretty expensive given the fact that it only excels at one thing: Allowing the user to read. I feel, on the most basic level, that the kindle should have a touch pad so user can scroll more naturally, and swipe to change pages. I feel that this addition alone would make using the kindle a more enjoyable experience.
As for other functions, I feel the limitation of e-ink would make a browser almost impossible, however even adding music content (hence adding a bigger flash drive) would help with sales. I like to listen to music when I read, so being able to do that with one device would be nice (especially on an airplane),
Well they're doing something that Apple doesnt. Giving the folks a choice.
I don't see anything wrong with it. It made me LOL seriously. The people don't want to see Apple, they can now redirect themselves from the main site to that.
As long as I'm not affected, it doesn't bother me.
This site doesn't belong to you. Hence there is no law that it be made to satisfy you. No where in the Constitution of the United States of America does it say that "Engadget must provide a website free of ALL Apple related news"
That's just pure bullshit.
If you don't like Engadget GTFO.
Again tell me....who's FORCING YOU TO READ Engadget Random Guy?
I really want to know!? For that matter LAY? WHO'S MAKING YOU GLUE THOSE EYES TO THIS WEBSITE?
This website who's Apple articles are apparently driving you to insult the writers post after post, hour after hour, day after day....?
@Edobe I'm sure the people want Engadget to do everything for them, but it's not possible.
It seems Engadget is getting into the business of appeasing 16 out of millions. It's so silly, Engadget is becoming like Barack Obama: trying to impress the right just to get 1 or 2 votes, instead of following through with the promises that got you elected.
@ROFL Giving stupid options doesn't make it any better. Why not do a poll/vot survey first. Instead, Engagdet is bending over and taking just because of 16 people. it doesn't make any sense.
I re-read the post and still did not see Apple and/or the iPad mentioned. Why is everyone still talking about Engadget having a filter on? I understand it is controversial and all (but really not), but this article is about dissatisfaction with the Kindle, not filtering Apple articles, or inserting random political opinions (yes Xega, I am looking at you). Sorry to complain, but I was interested in people opinion (especially those that own a Kindle or e-book reader) on what they would like changed, and if the e-ink is a necessity.
Don't even get me started on President Obama. I voted for the guy and I'm so pissed off at him right now.
I need him to grow a pair, fucking MAN UP, and take the Republicans head on.
Otherwise he's gonna go down the John Kerry path come 2012 and I'd hate for the first black president to be a 1 termer...
Options? You Apple haters want to talk about options?
Here's your freaking OPTIONS:
1) Read Full Engadget like NORMAL PEOPLE...Apple posts included. 2) Read Full Engadget and SCROLL PAST the evil Apple news. 3) GO TO FREAKING GIZMODO or some other tech news blog/website.
@TheRogueFFAngel aaaaaannnd if you dont like the comments made by others, ignore them.
holy crap. it's like this is your first day on the internet and someone in the chat room made a joke about your mom. seriously... you're crapping up the comments area with your poorly spelled drivel worse than the "haters" you're going on about.
P.S.: Everyone should know that they have the ability to exclude any kind of news they want:
www.engadget.com/exclude/[name here]
Nokia and Lenovo both work (in that they can be excluded).
Oh, this is a gadget site: unless the article has something to do with defense contractors, I really do not want to hear your political opinions... and I doubt others do either. I am sorry about all of the posts, but this is getting out of hand.
@John W Harding it may not be about Apple and filtering but it is within context in a way. Why doesn't Engadget do a special post highlighting the fact that you can exclude Amazon post just to appease a few people like me? Because it's stupid and it leads no where in the end. The only thing Engadget has succeeded in doing is -getting millions angry at their sheepish bending over for those 16 people. At least do a vote first
Jesus, you take the internet wayyyy too seriously.
First of all, it's an option. Secondly, you and your friend "Xega" appear to agree that Engadget should have done some sort of poll before creating an... option... about iPad news; yet, you also advocate that Engadget should not "bend over" to "16" people (where in the world is this 16 figure coming from?).
So, does Engadget continue to do whatever it wants, or does it listen to its commentators? On one hand, you want those who are against the iPad posts to be ignored; however, you want your views to be heard. Sorry, the world doesn't work like that. Either you want Engadget to listen or you don't.
Like it or not, there are a significant number (significant, far more than "16") of people who just get tired of reading the incessant iPad coverage. It's not necessary, and the device simply does not warrant the coverage that it gets. Realizing this, but still wishing to cover the iPad, Engadget created an option - an option for those who no longer wish to read about the iPad to be able to do so.
However, guess what? You still want to read about the iPad - so just go to the homepage! Yea! It's really that simple! Wow! Amazing!
In essence, you are creating an issue where there is none. You are taking up a cause which does not exist. You are being really ridiculous, quite frankly.
We "Apple Haters" appreciate the entertainment, however. Thanks!
Ok. Since you appear to know who is and is not within the "majority," exactly how many active commenters and readers are there on Engadget? How many have anti-Apple sentiment? How many pro-Apple? How many neutral? Can't tell me those exact numbers? Well then, it would appear you are unable to determine which is the majority, and which are not.
However, we can use some common sense to get a feel for the majority. What do I see? I see massive upranking and downranking action along certain lines within most Apple-related articles, especially those which seem excessive. And i see the same users that participate on other posts commenting there. However, plenty of people only rank and do not leave comments. Even more neither rank nor leave comments, but are still real people with real opinions.
I think it's silly to say that only 16 people are responsible for hundreds of comments, and robust ranks. If that were true, their ranks would quickly be overcome by pro-Apple-coverage ranks, which simply has not happened. And one cannot say pro-Applers aren't around - they come to tech blogs in droves when Apple launches a new product. So if anything, they should be more active now than at any other time.
In addition, let's take a look at the real world. Engadget is a blog owned by AOL. Both are here to make a profit. If they did not feel that they could lose a significant amount of revenue by ignoring the anti-iPad sentiment, then why would they have created the other option? If it was truly a minority as you aver, then they would not have done anything - or perhaps would've just banned people. But luckily, Engadget is not that stupid, nor are they "weak" - indeed, they do show some wisdom (and business sense) by trying to address what they view as their core coverage desires while balancing it with many people's opposition to all the iPad coverage.
So while it may not necessarily be a clear majority (maybe it is - point is, no one except the Engadget editors know), it is a significant number - MUCH more than 16.
@paul34 It isn't silly because Engadget said it was 16 in the post themselves- maybe you should go back and read it again.
Also you're right, you won't know the majority or minority unless you take a vote and Engadget clearly didn't do that. Instead they decided to show everyone that they can be push overs and that they can be pushed around by 16 people.
@Xega ok children. the whole filter thing is as previously noted not just to filter out apple. it's a general filter for ANY tag that they have. so while you guys freak out at the fact that they made a post that says "hey you can filter out apple news guys! ps. you can also filter out other stuff if you want", it is only a post. stop freaking out over something so ridiculously idiotic and realize that it's simply a new function that is added and that they use Apple as the example due to the fact that alot, and i mean alot, of posts have been about apple and the ipad. It's simply the easiest subject to catch attention to. so once again. all of you that are freaking out and beating a puppy over this filter thing, in the words of Samuel Jackson, "Tell the b!tch to chill! Chill b!tch!!!" it's only a post.
You're looking at it the wrong way. You Should be ashamed that Engadget would allow ONLY 16 people to push them into action. If that's the case then imagine what 100 hackers from China can make them do
@Xega I feel like it's more that those 16 commentators pushed engadget to come out with a function that serves to shut them up as well as allow more customizability for ALL users. Much like the introduction of the iphone pushed the smartphone industry to ramp up their stuff. it's something that, although it can be annoying, it provides a result that is beneficial for everyone.
@MiketheVee I disagree. So you're telling me it is better to appease a few unknowns without first doing a poll/vote/survey? Then what is the point of this comment voting system? Why don't we just allow those same 16 people out of millions dictate which comment should be down ranked to oblivion.
You see, It sends the wrong message. You don't appease troublemakers- that's why WW2 started.
Dude that's how this site is, filled with a bunch of useless Apple haters. Say one positive thing about Apple and you are downranked anything negative and you are upranked.
@Xega i respectfully disagree with you in this case. first of all WW2 was not caused by appeasing the troublemakers. 2ndly, it brought about a new function that is allows more flexibility in the website's function. Sure they were bitching and whining, but it coincidently brought about something nifty that will work with everyone. A poll is nice and all, but if they are able to bring something good out of the bad, then that's a good thing. I see it more as engadget realizing that from these 16 ppl, they should come up with something that will work with others, not that they created a whole new function because those 16 ppl made them do it.
I disagree again. Firstly, WW2 was caused by appeasing the "troublemakers"- you should look it up further.( Also this will be the last i speak of WW2-don't want to get caught up)
Secondly, the functionality was created for the wrong reason. It was created to appease first, and flexibility second.
Voting is the only logically thing to do, not impulsively reacting to some random commenters-I don't know how anyone can disagree with this.
So do you advocate doing the wrong thing in hopes that something good comes out of it? That doesn't make much sense to me
By Engadget caving in to the demands of 16 people, they have established a precedent that will never end, that is, they will continue to cave in to the few that complain. They will then lose credibility and the site will become a complete disaster

@paul34
The 16 figure comes from Engadget's post about excluding Apple news.
The issue is that Engadget is showing weakness when the number of of people complaining were not the the majority.
@Xega
Ok. Since you appear to know who is and is not within the "majority," exactly how many active commenters and readers are there on Engadget? How many have anti-Apple sentiment? How many pro-Apple?
