8.9-inch ExoPC Slate has iPad looks, netbook internals, Windows 7 soul
Yes, we realize that it's hard to provide too much visual differentiation between tablet PCs with large, ebony bezels, but we can't help but think that this 8.9-inch multitouch tablet looks a lot like another, recently announced 9.7-inch multitouch tablet. Nevertheless this one's quite different on the inside, delivering "the web without compromise," meaning full browser support with flash courtesy of Windows 7 on an Atom N270 at 1.6GHz, with 2GB of DDR2 memory and a 32GB SSD with SD expansion. Yeah, those specs are familiar too, and while we're not thinking this will deliver the sort of snappy performance seen on the iPad, it will certainly be a lot more functional. Battery life is only four hours, but at least it's user-replaceable, and a price of $599 matches the 32GB iPad. Likewise it will be available in March -- or you can get a non-multitouch prototype for $780 right this very moment. If, that is, you speak enough French to manage the order page.

Lol..
The "look like" comparison just begun..
Even with the apple news filter, Engadget still finds a way to reference apple.
@jdmbo1
Yup, its CrApple, CrApple CrApple all the way on THIS site.
Thank goodnes they are not called Pears, then there would be two of them...
Sorry, couln't resist the pun.
@Glodokboy
Since this was there first, the IPad looks like it and NOT the other way round. Thanks Engadget.
@rederikus
Well the Soul of Windows 7 was designed in Cupertino anyway, its just a hack job.
@jdmbo1 THEN DONT FU*KIN READ! WTF...
@Wesscoast
And you're the guy that jumps around screaming about "Apple haters", and yet here you are.
@nicholiservia Windows 7 supports wireless projectors. So yeah, I would imagine it would be fine.
@rederikus exactly. in fact, these new tablet PCs look like something else thats quite familiar that has been around for ages... aah yes. the digital picture frames. i mistook one the other day for a possible new tablet. lol.
@Glodokboy I know, it's annoying. And I like the iPad.
"Yes, we realize that it's hard to provide too much visual differentiation between tablet PCs with large, ebony bezels"
Then why even say it?? Just STFU about it!!
@nicholiservia It runs Windows 7, don't you think there are more apps on Windows than on iPhone?
And it would make a very portable gaming machine as gaming, if onscreen virtual key works good, since have all sort of emulators readily available from NES to PS1...
@nicholiservia
The wireless projector function in windows 7 works VERY well actually. I have an hp tablet that I use at work to present ppts and make annotations. And there is some smartboard integration, but all of the smartboards that I have used usually require a physical connection, but if there is a wireless one out there, it should work fine
@Glodokboy
It doesn't resemble the iPad at all....not to me at least.
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/6259/12649492041031.jpg
@nicholiservia You're telling us that you're not going to switch to a $300-600 device (competing Windows/Android tablets) because of $30? Sure, it has to be factored in, but it's a rather small percentage of the price.
@nicholiservia
I did't realize you could copy apps from one device to another...seems like a really bad design on apple's part if you ask me.
@nicholiservia
The songs you purchased on iTunes can be copied to and authorized on PC's with iTunes.
@jdmbo1
It will be almost impossible to avoid it. From now on, every tablet device will be compare to "it", and there are going to be tons of tablet coming in the near future.
@nicholiservia There is software available to convert iTunes format to mp3, so it would be easy to transfer music to PC. Not to mention, there is a version of iTunes for Windows.
I can understand your desire to keep using your purchased iPod apps, but as far as the music goes, I personally wouldn't let that be a deciding factor.
@Still Love Astrobiology
Your argument would hold water if the article didn't mention Apple in a non-mentioning way, and 90% or more of the comments on the subject weren't Apple-related. But since they are Apple related, it still holds true that more Apple mentioned and comments=more hits and comments. And your own comment only served to help that fact.
Just give up. Honestly, trying to hold back the Apple news and comments is like trying to hold back the tides.Just take a deep breath and read this:
God, grant me the power to change the things I can,
The serenity to accept the things I can't,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
@buoy >> tablet pcs have been much around longer than digiframes. Go look up anything by motion computing or the HP TC1000/1100
@nicholiservia You do realize, that being a PC, all you would need to do is load up iTunes on this thing, enter your account information, and boom, voila, like magic, all your music should work?
@Glodokboy Yes, I mean should it be really that way? Everytime we see another tablet here, should it be compared with the iPad? Okay we know the cupertino tablet made a fine-debut last January 27, but could we just stop the clamoring for a moment (engadget) -- Those cross-referencing to the apple tablet is starting to clutter post/feeds in this site.
Ah, yes, it really does looks like the comparison has begun.. iPad under fire: http://bit.ly/apple-ipad-scrutinized-details
@Glodokboy
Hell's bells, the iPad cloning has already begun. All the companies that claimed tablets and slates are a waste of time and no consumers will buy them are already starting to pump them out like OctoMom. A tablet running a full version of Windows 7 using an Atom processor is going to be another steaming pile of failure. Three hours of battery time is pathetic. Watch a movie and read 20 pages of a book and your PCSlate will be deader than Julius Caesar. I'm sure all the Windows lugnuts are going to try to load a full version of Microsoft Office and have it run like a slug when the anti-virus software kicks in. This slate is not a rip-off of the iPad. It's not worthy enough to be called that. Non-tech consumers will hate it.
@MosesusedaniPad
You cracked my shit up!
@Glodokboy at least we know there can't be a "hackipad"...
@jdmbo1
And people with the filter still have to see your stupid Ipad comment.
Do you see the irony?
@GadgetGeezer Did you really just throw a bible verse at me? Epic fucking fail.
And most of the comments on apple articles are overwhelmingly negative, so again, rabid fanboyism fail.
Nice try though.
@MosesusedaniPad http://www.tomshardware.com/news/iphone-virus-botnet-bank-details,9136.html
Looks like its time to put some AV software on your phone. And Macs clearly can get viruses, or why would apple sell AV software? Holy shit you are a tool.
@Still Love Astrobiology :
"Remember that article where they chopped a picture from an article about touch screen sensitivity to make the iPhone look better?"
Got a link?
@Glodokboy
This is the French version of the iPad, so it must be called the "iMerde" since it runs Windows 7. Just like all the Windows tablets before it, it will end up as another steaming pile of "iMerde".
@nicholiservia The problem you have here is exactly why some people think all software should be open source. You've paid for it. You want to use it somewhere else but can't. So now you need to pay another $30 for all the same apps on your new platform. That's what we call lock-in.
You are locked-in to the iPhone platform because your apps will only work for the iPhone and you feel you must get value for money for your investment.
This is also the scenario the music and movie industries want to push us into.
@nicholiservia If you think Apple, Inc will let you "port" the iPhone apps you bought to run them on a second device without buying them all over again, you are deluded.
@jdmbo1
What I really want is an engadget option to filter all the haters out of the comments. I don't care if you hate on Apple or hate on Microsoft, I just dislike your hate in general.
@Glodokboy
Here's a look-alike for you:
http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/27/think-ibooks-looks-familiar-youre-not-the-only-one/
APPLE STOLE THE LOOK OF DELICIOUS MONSTER FOR THEIR IBOOKS APP!
@Glodokboy
Hahahaha. Anything with a fucking black bezel around the screen looks like iPad right? Hell, the MacBook Pro's screen is a rip off of iPad.
@Wesscoast
really? do you really want to prove your lack of knowledge on GUI interfaces and operating systems that badly?
@Glodokboy
But this one seem to "win" instead of "fail."
@nicholiservia
It's a PC so I'm assuming it will acted like a PC and give people option and not confusion.
@Glodokboy - I think iPad is badly jealous for not looking like this device..
@Glodokboy
This is much much more beautiful the the iPad .... balanced bezel, widescreen , etc....
I suppose Engadget editors are far too important and busy being condescending to their loyal readers to notice that EVERY TABLET PC WILL LOOK SIMILAR TO THE REST. Not that the iPad is even a tablet PC, as it can hardly do anything properly. Engadget sucks!
@Outsider
But the iPad sure looks like Lenovo Hybrid U1's detachable screen. http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-hands-on-and-impressions/ If we're talking about bezels then again EEEPc has the market flooded with netbooks with a bezel around it.
@Still Love Astrobiology
The first comment is about the iPad looks comparison and has 48 replies. I suspect that if they didn't reference the iPad in the the post you'd see a lot less people commenting here.
Engadget knows that all they have to do is post some iPad reference and the comment count will blow up.
In any case, lets check back a year from now and see which device deserves to still be talked about.
first one out already "kills" the itampon
@tc4101
In terms of all of the base stuff we "nerds" expect, like the ability to run 2 programs at once, sure.
But that keyboard is just as lousy as the P*d's. I wish someone would just modify the old Samsung UMPC half-round keyboard.
http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums/media/48075/samsung_umpc_sense1_1.jpg
And you cant really tell what it's running. For all we know those could just be cut-n-pasted images on those screens.
@tc4101 The iPad was already dead when it launched. No need to kill it.
There have been MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH... better slate devices out there for MANY MANY MANY... years.
@maati
So by your logic all tablets are DOA? Can a tablet running a resource-heavy OS view emails and ebooks faster than a light resource-sipping OS? Even with a faster processor?
Better is very subjective. It all depends on what you want to do with it. If all you want is what the iPAd does, nothing else is going to do better because you don't care about the other crap anyway.
@tc4101
everything "kills" apple products on paper. thing is, we don't work and play and create on specs. user experience has sold more overpriced apple hardware (if you include ipods and iphones) this year than any other pc makers. those specs mean more the most.
@wigby Exactly. No amount of USB ports and CPU power is going to make using Windows 7 on a tablet a better experience than iPad. Is there even a decent multitouch browser for Windows, with pinch zoom, double-click column zoom etc? That alone will make the iPad the ultimate tablet. Android might come close but considering the iPhone still has the more polished UI then Android phone I'm pretty sure the tablet situation will be the same.
How nice of an experience will it really be to use Windows on a tablet? Have many of you here even tried? How about right-clicking task tray icons. Pull down menus. The little + icons in Windows Explorer. Window management. Those are all going to suck with a finger and you know that's not a comprehensive list. Windows simply isn't made to be a tablet UI. Period.
@grahamj
In terms of a comparison of interaction, you nailed it! Everything else aside, it will be much easier to interact with Apple's OS because it was made from the ground you with touch interface in mind.
