Armatix pistol / wristwatch combo tells time... to stay put
Armatix has apparently been working on its so-called "smartgun" concept for quite a while, but it's now finally shown up at the Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT, naturally) with its first actual product: a .22-caliber pistol that relies on a wristwatch as a safety. As you can probably figure out, the gun will only unlock itself when its in close proximity to the watch, which sends a "wireless arming signal" that, of course, also activates some green LEDs for good measure. Previous incarnations of the company's concept also relied on a fingerprint ID as an additional safety, but that seems to have been left off this production model, which will run €7,000 (or $9,700) when it starts shipping next month.

Does the watch tell time, too?
@Vance
I think it does... I think it does
Man, this post got my all excited for the weekend. I thought it was Thursday, because that's when I read this on Wired and Gizmodo.
@Engadget
Yeah, I think you screwed up! This was supposed to be an article about the iPad!
@Vance yep, the only bad part is where the bad guys buy a $15 Armatix jammer that shuts down your gun.
@Evan
Honey there is an intruder get my gun. Cl*.... Cl*... um, @#$@ watch battery.
@Tiptup300 It is related. Gives you an idea on what to do with an iPad.
Pop a few through it.
@(Unverified) Coolest, somehow it made me think of the judge dredd film. Those dna-unlocking mechanism never fail to catch your attention. Perhaps on the future, we would have some GPS guided bullet (smart bullet) huh.. like the ones we see on wanted. GPS guide: http://bit.ly/diy-gps-guide
@Vance
I can see a much much bigger problem. Even though the watch looks generic it still has a unique design. As a result anyone doing concealed carry (not that one should be CCW-ing a .22 anyway) would be immediately spotted after a few months of this hitting the streets, which will sort of defeat the point of ccw.
The idea is sweet though, but theres so many things that can go wrong I can only see this being useful for keeping your children safe from the gun (but you're doing something very very wrong if they even have access to it IMHO)
You guys bitch and bitch and bitch about every article being about it, or mentioning it somewhere, just using the word, etc. Then, Engadget delivers what you want, no fucking mention, and YOU feel the need to add it to the discussion. Round of applause everyone.
As for the article:
District 9 anybody?
This is one of those things you just figure "oh yea they probably already make that". Good stuff Armatix. This could be great in the military, law enforcement, or anywhere where the threat of someone else using your weapon (against you) exists.
@leikacolbie Maybe I'm showing my age here but, Outrun! Also why post a link to a Trojan on a tech site? I would think most of us are in the know, guy. ;)
Can I shoot the iPad with this?
@joshky
Wear long sleeves, problem solved.
@joshky
I don't think the point of this type of tech is just for conceal carry - so it may hurt those who wear it to conceal, but that hardly defeats the point of having a gun that can't be taken by a criminal and used against you. The point is safety for the owner in any situation. Think security, police, military, etc. At 9k+, this isn't really made for soccer moms to all run out and buy anyway.
So. . .what happens if the gun runs out of batteries?
@00iEye00 guns are good for hunting and protecting us from tyrants. To bad most of the world citizens gave into tyranny a long time ago. Look at the uk the keep giving up more and more freedoms. Now there talking about having combat spy spy over the entire country my 2012.
@00iEye00
Guns can be safely used for recreational/sporting purposes. Blowing away some junk on a range is a ton of fun and very relaxing. Responsible gun ownership is a good thing.
Of course, trophy hunting and drive-by shootings are irresponsible uses. However, this technology is another way to help encourage safe gun use if it were not so expensive. Geotagging shots would provide another deterrence to illegal use, but is highly invasive.
While I was not for a "war," the intent was to "help." Nukes would cause to much collateral damage. Now this blog is for TECHNOLOGY and not politics. Please discuss that stuff elsewhere.
@Faceless Troll - I don't think batteries would be a huge concern. The batteries on wireless keyfobs for cars last years, and it would simply become part of regular maintenance to see how many more months juice your gun has.
Just have the LED flash amber or something a couple months before its depleted. =)
@Ducman69
When the gun runs out of battery, the gunner starts running.... for his life.
@Sunil You can still club people with it, even if they are wearing motorcycle helmets.
Apparently someone hasn't watched Equilibrium. o_O
@00iEye00 as much as i agree with your post (sorry, but he has a poimt, simple gun use gets allot of soldiers killed) you have to look at it from the other perspective: what happens if the U.S. end up being the bad guys. they can can bomb everyone. bad guys win. or, another country with bad intentions just blows us all up.
@Faceless Troll Well presumable when you're taking your gun out for the day you can just look at the charge status. It probably only uses a tiny amount of power anyway so it's not like it's going to run out of power halfway through a firefight. You might as well freak out about your cell phone running out of power halfway through a 911 call then too.
Puts a whole new meaning on "Oh damn, I lost my watch."
@tekdemon unless its also a laser gun. pew pew pew prrtfizzle... =*(
Price is ridiculously high, but the concept is pretty sweet.
@RLBurkes I honestly can't think of a single technology that could possibly be in this gun to shoot the price up that high.
@Sabrage Its the little light on the back. ; )
@Sabrage I know right. If R&D was costing that much you should have abandoned this project along time ago/ Still it is neat concept for you defenseless animal slaye,,, I mean hunters.
@RLBurkes
If you need security, you can buy yourself an armed bodyguard for that price.
@Sabrage I don't recognize that firearm. If they had modified a mass produced standard frame to accept the technology, it should be way cheaper, but if they actually are producing only a handful from scratch then its like those luxury sports cars that cost millions when their performance is beneath a $70K high production Z06.
@Sabrage
I can. Might be too hard to put on a gun though, you have to engrave a fruit logo on it...
It's 'neat' in a futuristic sense. I'm not a fan of guns, though.
@00iEye00 Agreed, the world would be better if we killed all the humans. The humans are dead.
@danhawk911
They`re system of oppression, What did it lead to?
Global robots depression.
"As you can probably figure out, the gun will only unlock itself when its in close proximity to the watch,"
...while the bad guys will simply take and throw away your watch, and use their old school guns. Seems like a FAIL to me.
@pika2000 If they're able to take your watch off your wrist, they're able to kill you, I think.
There are other disadvantages, but I think the main selling point here is to help avoid those tragic accidents where a child find and uses a gun by mistake.
(At least, I can't really think of another reason for it.)
@Load Ran That's assuming one will wear that watch 24/7.
@Load Ran
Proper way would be to store the guns in one safe, the ammo in another safe, and this "watch" in a third. Then again, if the guns and ammo were separated those "accidents" would never happen.
SEE! guns don't kill people, people kill people
guns good!
*walks back to trailer*
@Rinum009
No, is more like "guns don't kill people, watches kill people"
"There's a cap for that."
Does it pew pew?
9000 for a pistol? uhhh, no thanks.
@flett
What if they add a few Swarovski Crystals? Would you buy it then?
That usually works for mobile phones.
@Gregorian i would consider it
@flett Um, I believe it's actually OVER 9000, to be correct sir.
@Rooshma i was planning on stealing it and leaving a 9000 dollar bill behind actually.
@flett '
do people really pay this much for a gun?
@Gregorian
i would buy it if the Swarovski Crystals came with Blake Lively doin her Booty Go Round n Rounds
in case you curious...

Probably the worst idea for self defense weapon ever. If you carry daily you'd better prey there is no technological "glitch" if you need to use the weapon.
In self defense, the most simple gun to maintain and use is first and foremost. The concept is totally horrible.
