Armatix pistol / wristwatch combo tells time... to stay put
Armatix has apparently been working on its so-called "smartgun" concept for quite a while, but it's now finally shown up at the Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT, naturally) with its first actual product: a .22-caliber pistol that relies on a wristwatch as a safety. As you can probably figure out, the gun will only unlock itself when its in close proximity to the watch, which sends a "wireless arming signal" that, of course, also activates some green LEDs for good measure. Previous incarnations of the company's concept also relied on a fingerprint ID as an additional safety, but that seems to have been left off this production model, which will run €7,000 (or $9,700) when it starts shipping next month.

@psykick5
For that price tag you would think so.
just imagine someone hacking that thing and then in 10years our forces weapons wont work i say go back to normal weapons
No. No. No.
I'm not buying a gun with a wireless safety. There are just too many things that can go wrong. I hope this concept doesn't take off. Otherwise, criminals will just start carrying jammers and you're BONED.
@Smurf
Couldn't have said it better myself. Nice job.
9700 bucks for a pistol!!!!! holy crap!
good luck selling that. lol
This gun will only be usable by Grammatron Clerics.
a 200 dollar gun lets you steal a 10K gun
@Ops
Essentially.
I just can't see electronic safeties having any real success on anything other than sports weapons, and maybe hunting weapons, but on anything used for personal defense there is no way on earth an electronic safety is a good idea.
Especially wireless, imagine 20 years down the road if all guns had wireless safety's... O look I have an old mechanical gun and a wireless spectrum jammer... What's that? Your safety won't disengage? GF...
@Amnesia87
Jammers are highly illegal though and can be easily noticed and cause a response, also many people get shot by their own guns, and kids get at guns too if you aren't very careful, and guns are a very attractive item for thieves.
An then there's the thing that once they find a cheap and easy way it will probably get mandated eventually, there already have been proposals to that effect actually.
And anyway a mugger or deranged character or cop coming at you with a taser probably don't first go do research what kind of gun you have then go and buy a jammer and then bring it.
how long before these watches end up in rap videos and/or lyrics?
What if:
(a) I want to wear my watch on my left hand, but, my right is my shooting arm?
(b) if the gun is only armed when in close proximity to my watch, if my gun is holstered on my waist, and when my arm drops down, is in close proximity to my gun.
?!?
@mcbazza
They will make an app for that.
@mcbazza
It's not the safety it's to prevent people that take it from you using it, especially against you, and that in light of statistics show that most people that get shot are shot with their own gun.
Plus it should keep it safe from the kids somewhat.
Anyway I presume it also has a normal safety. (google image search seems to confirms that.)
I don't understand what it is with you americans and your guns, this is a deadly weapon and i don't want it anywhere near me, with a watch or without it.
@(Unverified)
"you americans [sic]".
And who are you?
@Curious G
A european?
@(Unverified)
The question mark tells me you are not sure and the lack of capitalization suggests it is not that important anyway. Either way, keep to yourself over there if you don't like how we do it.
@(Unverified)
For the record Armatix is a German company, not American.
@hoss789
They still sell predominantly to americans though I assume.
As for keeping over there, nice suggestion if the behavior was mutual and americans kept at home too.
Only $9000 overpriced, it's a steal.
wireless... aha... good point... hack and jamming techs to follow...
How about including a timer option, if you want to commit
suicide point the gun to your head after setting your watch
for 10 seconds. Just by wearing the watch alone, police and
criminals already know you are armed.
Colt's actually came out with a concept to this quite a while ago, but used a ring instead of a watch. It was targeted at law enforcement and one of supposed selling points was that it would not allow the gun to be turned on its owner (i.e. if the criminal managed to wrestle the gun away somehow).
@Curious G
That wasn't a supposed selling point - that was the entire reason for them creating the tech in the first place. People are confusing this with it being a trigger safety device - it's no. It's to prevent other people from shooting you with your gun.
If I felt that I need to carry around a Handgun to feel safe I'd get the hell out of that place and take my entire family with me.
Why would you need more than one? I can understand the fun in shooting ranges etc. but the one has a large collections so you can try them to your gun-totin' mo-fo's heart hearts content. But collecting guns is disturbing. Actually - carrying a concealed weapon is disturbing enough
Regarding the tech. Surely a fingerprint scanner would be better. require permanent contact with the scanner to activate.
@Prowl
Excellent idea! I have been trying to find a newsletter or message board where the criminals post their next intended targets, but have had little luck. Could you share your sources?
@Prowl I think you might have missed a couple cliches. How about "If you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear" or how about quoting that ridiculous "27 times more likely to be shot" fallacy... You libbyboyz are getting sloppy in your old age!
@Robbzilla Nope, just not a gun totin' twat with anger issues. Get back in yer box billybob.
@Robbzilla Nope just not a gun totin' twat. Get back in your box Billy-bob. You are Wrong. I am right. Get used to it.
@Prowl
Just to clarify, is your position that all "gun toter's" are twats or just Robbzilla !
kind of a cool idea, but theres allways those moments where your batteries die, or someone has a jammer? then your screwed, esp if theres a robbery and the guy simply has to have a jammer to jam your signal. or if the police use it and the robbers send out signals to jam or confuse thier guns. i forget which movie but i remember a few doing a cool biometric deal where you either scanned your fingerprint or it recognized you through the grip and your hand.
probably neater would be a super short range rfid implanted into your palm that has to be whithin less than a few mm's of your guns pistol, therefore limiting the possibility of jamming or interferance.
