CE-Oh no he didn't? Part LXVII: Steve Jobs lashes out at Google, calls Adobe 'lazy'
According to a report in Wired (and a source whom the publication says "could not be named"), Steve Jobs spoke to an audience of Apple employees at a town hall in Cupertino and... pulled zero punches. If you believe what you read, Jobs tackled a handful of major issues that have been buzzing the company lately, namely its run-ins with Google on a number of topics, and the lack of Flash support in its mobile devices (most notably in the upcoming iPad). On Google, Jobs had this to say: "We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them." According to the attendee, another topic was brought up but Steve wouldn't let the Google issue go, stating his thoughts on the company's famous 'Don't be evil' line. In Steve's words? "It's bullshit."
Furthermore Jobs had a handful of choice words for Adobe, calling the company "lazy" and claiming that "Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it's because of Flash. No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5." Of course, these amazing nuggets of wisdom come from a source which Engadget cannot verify, so it's possible there are misquotes or items taken out of context, though from the sounds of things, this kind of talk falls right in line with what we'd expect from the man who said Microsoft "had no taste" and makes "really third-rate products." We eagerly await Eric Schmidt's response.

@SteveJobsCEO
Don't talk sh*t about companies that could crush yours with one finger. Your 15% market share of OS's doesn't qualify you to talk sh*t about companies with >50% market share AND the biggest search engine in history. Learn your place, Jobs.
@SteveJobsCEO What if Adobe did MacOS what iPhone OS does to flash. I mean no more Adobe programs developed for mac at all. Mac owners are supposedly the creative type so how would they like not having Photoshop, illustrator, indesign, etc. How about no more adobe reader, yea now more reading PDF's on your macs. And No more Flash on macs, No hulu for you.
You should watch who you're calling lazy before they get lazy and stop supporting your products.
@Edobe
Exactly! He's just making enemies as he said, and that doesn't work in relation between companies, nations, or even people. Adobe pulls their stuff from Macs, Microsoft pulls Office... what's left? iPhoto? LOL
@SteveJobsCEO
It's called the iPod. Oh, and while you're listening, fix iTunes before you complain about Flash.
@SteveJobsCEO
Sneaky... you forgot to mention the 250.21B market cap of Microsoft... you must be Republican or something...
@psykick5
Of course he won' t mention MS. He is an idiot.
@SteveJobsCEO
I want to thank you for raising the standards in the computer industry. I have always used Mac computers until I graduated from college some 12 years when I was forced to use PC because of my company. I have remained a PC user. However, I strongly believe that because of Apple's products that have forced many computer companies to raise their standards in innovation and quality. If Apple was not in the picture, we would all be stuck with Windows 98 right now.
@Edobe
PDF is a public format so no problems there. I do believe that OS X has built in support for reading PDFs already and problably also for creating PDFs.
The problem would be Photoshop et al but I am pretty sure that Adobe would never dare to ake such a move...
@psykick5 I think that the idea that market share of a particular product should dictate your ability to say what you want or the validity of your opinions is pretty awful.
Are all our opinions of those richer and more powerful to be discarded?
@psykick5 http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10017015-92.html and http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100324/apple-nearing-wal-marts-market-cap/
DAMN.....
Welcome Joshua Topolosky 2.0 !!!
@vvnraman Who is that?
Sorry if I was immature there but I honestly just typed what I said.
@Jeremiah - Josh is the Editor in Chief of Engadget, and also posted a rather scathing post yesterday directed at those who "hate" everything about Apple.
I agree with your sentiments though - Steve must really not be happy with Google or Adobe.
@MRCUR Yeah. I love Engadget, but they do seem to be getting excessively defensive about the Apple-bias thing lately. It's no big secret they love Apple and love talking about Apple. It bothers me sure, but I keep coming back anyways (and without the non-Apple filter on). I think they just need to chill out about the whole thing...
@Chird - Please don't take my comment the wrong way - I'm simply trying to state the facts, not my opinion on the matter.
I've read almost every one of Engadget's recent reviews, most of which have been written by Josh, and while it is clear Josh enjoys using Apple products, I don't believe there is a bias. Comparing something to one of Apple's numerous products is NOT showing a bias, but acknowledging that much of what Apple creates is used as a comparison by most average consumers.
I heard he likes black turtlenecks
@MONKEY
I heard he's never actually eaten an apple.
@MONKEY I heard he makes them into a soup and eats them.
@derX yeah... not since he took that bite of the apple which ended up as their logo... no?
on topic... I think he should stop acting like a kid and agree that competition is here to stay... and regarding Adobe, maybe he is correct but he can't just ignore the fact that it's not full internet if there's no flash.. at least at the moment.
Don't miss flash that much on my iPhone, but I doubt iPad can't afford to not have it (IMHO)... c'mon it's already lame to allow only one app at a time.. c'mon it's a freaking tablet.. not a phone.
pal :)
That would be cannabalism, wouldn't it?
@coolpal i agree with you in theory about the whole flash thing, but from a strategic standpoint, if apple is completely behind html5 overtaking or replacing flash, the best thing they can do is leave it out. the bigger apples user base gets regarding iphone, ipod touch, and ipad (once it drops), the more incentive/pressure (much more so on the incentive side)websites are going to have to either switch to html5 or offer both when it comes to video.
i'm not sure there is anything really wrong with the google comments taken under the context that these are two competing companies. i'm sure google would love to see the iphone die off in favor of android...and the evil comment to me just really means that there really isn't a "good guy" in business....its cutthroat as hell, and nobody really just wants to play nice with everyone....esp when they are competitors.
although i do think that google and apple could be a huge force together in the html5 vs flash debate......apple continues to ignore flash and google takes youtube to html5 would give it some real momentum.
someone tell me if this is still true (something mentioned in an advertising class of mine) my professor said that when it comes to the way google pulls down search results, flash does nothing to help the accuracy of said search results.....maybe thats an outdated point now, or completely moot if html5 would act the same (or my prof is just totally full of s%$@....but if not, html5 becoming the new standard would be a big help to google's business.
@MONKEY I heard Adobe is bloated and lazy and it's not genetic.
@derX
probably why he couldn't keep the doctors away.
@MONKEY
Wow. He wears a turtle neck all the time, so I have nothing to say regarding his comments other than his black turtle neck that others had been cracking at for a decades.
Yeah, whatever Alexander Calder did was dumb because he wears that same old red polo every time. Right?
@ummmwhat HTML IS NOT GOING TO BE OUT FOR 12 MORE YEARS. I THINK ITS FUNNY HOW THE IPHONES AND THE ITUNES STORE WAS HACKED. BUT YET APPLE CALLS ADOBE LAZY AND THE REASON WHY APPLES CRASH. APPLES CRASH BECAUSE THEY SUCK.
GOOGLE VS APPLE - FIGHT!!!!!!!!
@xxgunnerxx, damn right: http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=google&word2=apple ! :D
@xxgunnerxx, even Adobe beats them, and have in mind that `apple` is a general word: http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=adobe&word2=apple
@incognito You do know that Adobe is a general word, too, right? It's a clay building.
*cough*
woohoo. this is gonna be a fun thread to follow. defend your respective camps zealots!
@brrip
Yeah, it may be fun to watch all this, but if I had Apple stock, I'd be taking a long, hard look at it. Steve Jobs sounds borderline manic these days, and it makes me nervous. He really seems to believe that he doesn't make mistakes. Pride comes before the fall, so they say...
@Abe
I think you are absolutely right. I suspect that the manic behavior of SJ is driven by the steroids that he is on for the transplanted liver. Steroids are some of the most common antitransplant rejection drugs. They tend to provoke this type of submanic state that we are seeing recently. I am curious to what degree the others on the Apple board realize this.
He would need to be replaced quickly before Apple manages to alienate all.
@Abe
what about back in 1997 when he put a target on Dell. At the time Dell was considered unbeatable and apple a has been... You know what happened right? Steve is focused. FOCUS.
Your advice has been what apple haters have been saying every year for the past 10 years! How did shorting apple work ? LOL.
@jaffreywali
What are you talking about? Where did I say I was an Apple hater, or that I shorted Apple stock? Oh, never mind, you're one of those people. I don't wet myself every time I hear or see the name "Steve Jobs," so I must be part of an evil corporate anti-Apple conspiracy, right?
@Oflife
Damn right he is. I mean seriously theres no reason flash should make my quad core cpu go up to 80% usage >.> Adobe needs to get their sht together and remake flash from scratch
stating his thoughts on the company's famous 'Don't be evil' line. In Steve's words? "It's bullshit."
LOL! Just lol.
@Pyronick That proves it, then. Apple is evil.
@Pyronick
"It just works"
Bullshit.
@Oflife
"No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5."
Maybe in a few years. But for right now, Flash is what's being used. That's a piss poor excuse.
@BigJayDogg3 Could not agree more.
@BigJayDogg3 Thirded. You can't ignore how widespread Flash use is.
@Joshua Topolsky
I don't know Josh, reading some of the comments here, I see a whole lot of ignoring how widespread flash is.
@BigJayDogg3 exactly! everyone keeps talking about HTML 5 but the reality is that its not just gonna become ubiquitous overnight, it will take YEARS to overcome flash.
@BigJayDogg3
Agreed, but sadly when html5 finally becomes widespread people will call him a visionnaire.
But I loved his response on the Google moto "don't be evil".
@BigJayDogg3 ... I completely agree. There are so many "normal" sites e.g. architects, designs that are purely Flash. The problem is that Flash sucks the big one on the Mac. Ask ANY Mac owner this. It crashes constantly and drains battery life like nothing else. That being said I hope Google, Apple and Microsoft can join together to get rid of Flash.
@BigJayDogg3
"No one will be using Floppies. The world is moving to CDs"
You see, Apple always do things first. Remember the iMac didn't come with a floppy drive, everyone got equally outraged. Now with hindsight we can see it was the right choice.
@BigJayDogg3
Doesnt everyone think that Apple should be careful making comments like this when many consider Photoshop to be somewhat synonomous with Apple? I mean if Apple keeps crap like this up, don't you think Adobe will give Jobs the finger and just drop Mac as a platform? I know thats pretty drastic, but I doubt Apple could create a rival to CS that the graphics junkies will love. But Jobs is kind of correct--there is quite a bit that Adobe could do to make a lot of their software offerings much better.
@BigJayDogg3: The majority of our Fortune 500 clients have already stated that Flash is DOA in new site development and revisions. Have fun living in the past, Fl@ss Clowns!
