Sony's John Koller: Apple's entrance into gaming market drives consumers to PSP
Um, okay? Just days after Apple introduced its exceedingly underwhelming iPad while simultaneously attempting to convince that masses that said product was the portable gaming device they had been waiting their whole lives for, Sony's own hardware marketing honcho has come forward and extolled Cupertino's decision to finally make the gaming leap. In a recent interview, John stated the following:
While we can't seem to shake the suspicion that Mr. Koller is drawing links that probably don't exist (at least fully) in reality, research firm NPD does show that sales of the PSP have "nearly tripled since the iPhone went on sale in June 2007." Of course, it's not like the PSP has gained functionality, become the home of more than a few killer titles and spawned a UMD-less sibling since the heydays of '07, but hey -- who are we to question the suit?"Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony. When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

@Banksta3 Useful comment win.
@Banksta3
... And neither has a camera cuz they're both great gaming devices!
@Banksta3 Forget the apple filter, we need a Darren Murph filter.
@SteveJobsCEO
That was well established when you called the iPad 'magical' and 'revolutionary' Steve.
@SteveJobsCEO
Show. Me. Facts mister!
@SteveJobsCEO
Yeah, because Macs are so much better than Sony Vaios, right?
[/sarcasm]
@Banksta3
If you filter out Apple at Engadget, you'll be looking at a blank site. Besides, judging by the amount of comments, people seem to love these flame-baiting articles.
@SteveJobsCEO
I prefer pc over mac but this comment is gold, thank you.
@SteveJobsCEO Correction: When people want a deeper, richer computer, they start using a PC.
@John Stathakis
Or maybe fanboy filter, that should filter out most engadget staff. Pretty useful if you ask me.
@snowycoke
But...the Mac is a PC. :(
@Why should I have all the fun
It will be magical when it sell 2x more than the nearest competitor and we spend the rest of the decade talking about the ipad killer...bound to happen. History repeats itself. LOL.
@Banksta3
We're taking fire! Set the Apple Deflector Shields to 'double front'.
@Banksta3 why comment on stuff you don't care about?
PSPs sells so well because it's a hacker's dream. It runs every possible emulator very well, The problem starts when you wanna play PSP games and see nothing being released.
This is the release schedule for 2010:
02/04 Armored Core: Silent Line Portable
02/16 SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3
02/22 Dante's Inferno
02/23 Metal Slug XX
03/02 Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
Major League Baseball 2K10
MLB 10
03/09 Blazblue Portable
03/30 Mimana Iyar Chronicles
04/06 The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest
04/27 FIFA World Cup 2010
05/03 LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
05/11 Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
05/25 Hexyz Force
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
07/06 Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable
And the hackfree PSP Go doesn't sell. Maybe if they had added a touch screen this could have had some legs.
@SteveJobsCEO
Everyone knows games are better on a PC, and Steve I hope you're on here solely to read feedback on the iPad and then you know...fix it before it comes out.
Oh crap I forgot you don't give a flying @#$% what we want :-(
@jaffreywali
... "history repeats itself."
Ummm, Newton?
@Why should I have all the fun : I have a camera for my PSP. You can get them off Amazon.
@SteveJobsCEO Steve, gives us iPhone 4!! how about faster itunes? I got like 30000 songs and 100 movies and runs like molasses.
i love 'apple versus' posts. its more relevant compared to just 'apple only' posts.
@DMurph via John Stathakis
The trendy use of the word 'said' as a demonstrative pronoun is quickly becoming my least favorite form of linguistic douchbaggery.
@Banksta3
You are right...enough about the ipad, ijobs, and the ifanatics already.
@SteveJobsCEO
Add to the list of iPad functionality:
Ability to turn an otherwise healthy blog into 4Chan.
@John Stathakis Glad you noticed the "exceedingly underwhelming iPad" part. Really shows that you're reading.
@DarrenMurph - I'd uprank your comment if I could.
@SteveJobsCEO
Steve I find hard to support Apple when things are going so well for you and the company and you decided to fire my brother. He is an idiot but not to the extent of warranting a dismissal.
@Banksta3
Any filter would collapse under the weight of this shit.
@Ridgecity
thats a cute list, but there's probably 5,000 games coming out for the App Store this year, and they don't come in a clunky box at the mall.
@Banksta3 there are barely any stories on engadget if you exclude Apple stories. I mean how am I suppose to kill time when I have already read all of the articles and comments for the 3 stories they have?
@Wesscoast Yeah, 3000 Tetris clones and 2000 downgraded games I could play full speed on my PSP or on my PC using the dreadfull Flash ... You convinced me ... (not really...)
Speaking of useful comments - I may have something which will add clarity to these Sony words:
I *think* what he means is that by giving access to games on the iPad, people develop naturally a gaming "habit" (or at least a portion of these people) and these are the "new" customers that Sony is hoping to woo if these iPad pundits outgrow the limitations of the iPad as far as gaming goes and search for a "richer" gaming experience which Sony reportedly have in their possession in the form of the PSP.
That is, I believe, the reasoning behind his words. Reminds me of drug dealers giving out crack samples to get neighbourhood kids "hooked" on the good stuff... they later grow up to be "customers".
@buoy
That guy is so full of crap. PS2 and PSP sales have been down all of 2009. He ought to check out some facts for himself.
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/18/plummeting-ps2-and-psp-sales-shrunk-sonys-market-share-in-2009/
I can understand the PS2 losing share to the newer PS3, but the PSP is losing sales to the Nintendo DS.
They will go to the DS instead, I would think, if they decide they want a dedicated portable game console... an iPad user would be more likely to want a touchscreen, you'd think...
(Yes, alright, the iPad is capacitive and the DS is resistive, but the PSP is nothingive)
@EpsilonNot
um, the ds then offers really nothing that the iPad doesn't, save for first party exclusives. the psp on the other hand, has an astounding infrastructure and games that are complex and big enough that take over usually 500 or more MB, and go up to near 2 GB, so, i think its a bigger jump, but thats just my prespective.
@crazypeng1
I suppose... but I honestly was being more ridiculous than anything else, if you like games on the iPad, then you're most likely to play games... on the iPad!
@EpsilonNot
I've played plenty of iPhone game and it have yet to convince me to replace any dedicated game machine.
@cdf74dc9
PSP games cost at least 3x more than any App Store games.
@choclat
You can return PSP games to the store
You can sell PSP games on ebay or craiglist or trade them in to a gamestop
You can let your friend borrow a PSP game
Can't do any of that with an iphone app
@cdf74dc9
Are any of those iPhone games any decent? More importantly, hows the 'extraordinary experience' without any tactile controls?
@EpsilonNot
Gaming without buttons is just dumb. The nintendo DS has got a keypad for a reason. Sames as the PSP. The iPad will never be a portable game console. Check out this link for explanation: http://www.bukisa.com/articles/236306_why-the-apple-ipad-will-eventually-fail
Finally, an article about something than the stupid iPad... Wait, damn.
@John Stathakis *something other
@John Stathakis Finally, an article *not about* the stupid iPad... Wait, damn
gawd I'm bored
@John Stathakis
Look at how many comments these stories get versus content about something else. Just do the math on page views. You're playing right into AOL's hand by even commenting on it and giving them more page views, more ad impressions, they're playing the anti-Apple crowd like a bunch of bitches and you guys are falling for it.
I have a psp go and although the controls are nice I never use it because its just so terribly slow and has a much too small screen and not to mention most iphone titles have better graphics. Sony really needs to step up their game if they want people to buy and keep using their products. I do have to say their appstore is great and they are heading in the right direction.
@MoonWalkerCTE : "and not to mention most iphone titles have better graphics."
No, they don't. Even iphone 3gs games dont have better graphics.
How you could claim that boggles my mind, the sheer logistics of it make your remark stupid. You think a $4 game will have a budget high enough to make games even comparable graphically to PSP's best? Show me a game on iphone that looks as good as Crisis Core, Gurumin, etc
@MoonWalkerCTE
non sense
PSP > ipad.....enough said.
@(Unverified) DSi > PSP > rat poop >iPad
@(Unverified) DSi sucks.
@kojo87
PSP > DSi > Rat poop > iPad
