Motorola's so-called
Calgary has found itself on a lengthy, fascinating journey from rumor to retail -- a journey that began
way back in 2008. Finally, here we are a whole bunch of months later, the high-end
Droid having been released back in November and Verizon still without a midrange choice for Android hopefuls -- but that's about to change. Right, Verizon?
Right? The latest intel from
Android and Me suggests that the Devour (as it'll almost certainly be known to the public) will feature a Qualcomm MSM7627 -- the same next-gen entry-level core being used by the
Pixi that's designed to replace the aging MSM7600 series, very likely a chip that we're going to be seeing a whole lot of over the next 12-18 months in devices that manufacturers don't deem worthy of
Snapdragon. Meanwhile,
Android Central seems to have scored a shot of some promotional material for the Devour suggesting that it's not far off -- the site says we're looking at a retail box here, but considering how small and narrow the Droid's box is, this could actually be some in-store signage or something to that effect. We'll know soon enough, hopefully.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: And look at this, Motorola's
support documents for the Devour are now live (we count 10 pages' worth, total). Not too much interesting in here, but we can confirm that the name will be Devour, it's
got WiFi, and
there'll be a car kit available. Thanks, Stormdancer!
@Banksta3
Luckily they decided to wait for Android to release this. The mockup from 2008 looked like their old UI.
Great Scott!
@Emmett Brown
Enough! Stop! Get a job!
...and when you do, could you get me an interview?
@00iEye00
There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?
@Emmett Brown
Why don't you make like a tree.... AND GET OUTTA HERE?
@ChazClout Make like a banana and... RUN!!!!!
@Emmett Brown - 1.21 JIGGAMAYOWATTSSS
@Banksta3 - its actually porkian
@Emmett Brown One of the strange thing about this calgary model is why should the specs be fluctuated down by moto developers? Mm, hopefully the prices will be on the same boat too. Moto Devour is
a droid phone that's something that is not so glamorous to see. Details: http://bit.ly/moto-calgary-devour-details
Need a new phone, looking at an Android one. This doesn't look too bad and whats better it doesnt run the crappy lazy made iphone os.
@thetoad Haha...wow you're really hoping to get downranked aren't you?
@thetoad I see you create an account for the sole purpose of incessantly spewing anti-apple rhetoric on every single engadget post. I'm sure that seemed like a good idea this morning when you thought of it, however, you should try actually contributing to the topic at hand, There are enough trolls here already.
@thetoad
This doesn't look that bad? If you're on Verizon and are trying to get your Android fix the Droid should be your best friend. If you can wait till spring you can just pick up the Nexus One. By then I'd imagine all the bugs people are experiencing on T-mobile would be worked out
@Edobe
heeheh busted me. Yup I was dreaming last night how to troll so hard and today I did it. But since you seemed so nice and genuine in your advice I'll try my bestest not to. Don't hold me to it though.
"Devour"? Seriously?
@NewL OM NOM NOM NOM NOM DELICIOUS PHONE!! :D
Run for your lives!
A Fix For Expanded Replies: (sorry, one last time)
1. Install "Stylish" add-on in Firefox. (or use your preferred style manager).
2. Edit your "Engadget" style and add the following lines :
.comment_entry {
display: block!important;
}
Now all comments will be expanded (except down ranks).
@One Love
I still don't understand why this is necessary.. we have logins to post now, surely they could simply create a simple preferences panel.
One single boolean value against the login in the db to toggle expanded or not.
@One Love
Thanks for explaining this fix.
I hate when sites take a perfectly good experience and F@#% it all up.
It just annoys me until I decide to delete them from my favorites and never return.

engadget has been fraking with the comment system for the last week. it's incredibly annoying.
i too cannot figure out why they can't implement simple user preferences. let us choose how many comments per page we see and whether or not replies are expanded or collapsed.
lame as.
I believe they collapsed the replies because some posts have lots of pictures and text making the page height taller. If the replies are also expanded it looks bad on different devices.
The 90's called asking their box design back.
PS: Moto + Android = rivers overflowing of pure win.
@Verythrax
That looks more like the 80's to me. I prefer HTC, if only they would wise up and just release android without tampering with the UI; their phone designs are much better.
@Verythrax looking again at it, it reminds me those multimedia kits. Seems like I would find a creative CD-Rom drive, a sound card and a bunch of CDs. :D
@Verythrax
haah yes it looks just like one of creative's sound card boxes. completely sad.
@thetoad "I prefer HTC, if only they would wise up and just release android without tampering with the UI"
Nexus One says HAI! :)
@ChazClout
Well yeah NexusOne indeed, nexus one indeed.
@Verythrax
It's nice to see Verizon is finally ditching their unified boxes. The bland VCAST boxes kinda took the excitement out of opening it up.
@00iEye00
1st thing I thought of too.
@00iEye00
yea but:
+ Verizon instead of T-Mobile
+ Android OS instead of whatever Sidekick has
why dont they name it the moto droid devour. keep with the droid name ...
@CalBearGuy yeah. i wanted all their android phones to stick with the droid name. even though this will be completely masked basically because of motoblur. but sense covers stock android pretty well too
@CalBearGuy
Probably so they don't have to pay George Lucas licensing fees with every device sold.
@CalBearGuy
cuz that would mean that this new phone could eat the old Droid? no?
Thats not a retail box, thats EXACTLY how the dummy phones and initial promo lit show up in when they come in to stores.
Oh, I didn't realized someone was trying to order an Android device with less-capable hardware.
@(Unverified)
While, for most tech enthusiasts, I would agree this is not an option, getting the Android platform on cheaper phones means only 1 thing: larger installed-base.
We, as enthusiasts, need to realize that not all products cater to our market segment.
why is it that after releasing one popular, Motorola always thinks they can release a bunch of uninspired phones?
Given that it's the product of some guys who worked at Danger/Sharp on the Sidekick and on the Motorola branded Sidekick Slide, it obviously shares quite a few resemblances. It's just way to bulky and oversized for my taste. A lot of wasted space if you ask me. I need a smaller phone then that.
android has save moto
if it runs moto blur why does it still have the 4 button layout on the right?
thats...how the device will actually look...?
Motorola seems to be lowering my expectations now :/
I don't see what the point in people saving $50 on a phone is if you're going to have to pay $30/month for data. Just pay the $50 and get the better phone!
@Shadow08 I totally agree. If you're going with a verizon smartphone, you have money. You might as well get a bit better phone for a bit more money, you're already paying around 3000 dollars, if you want to spend less money, go with tmobile or sprint. Save about 1000.
That there's what's called a launch kit.
I find it funny that the Palm Pixi is an "entry-level" phone while the Moto Devour is "mid-range" - and they both share the same processor.
@Chi You need to look at it in context of each company's lineup. As Palm goes, the Pixi is clearly the entry-level webOS device, but if you look at the Devour in the bigger Android picture, there are a number of devices that slot in below it.
@Chris Ziegler Yes. That is true. I was just making a comparison that the Pixi's processor is "entry" while for Android, that process is considered "mid". Of course there's more segmentation for Android. There's what? at least 25 phones worldwide now?
I thought the Droid ERIS was considered a mid-range Android device. No?
