Xbox 360 Hard Drive accessory bumped to 250GB in Japan
On March 11th, Microsoft will kick out its 250GB external hard drive to the good people of Japan; notable, as the first time that this 250GB drive has been sold anywhere outside of a new console bundle. The slab of external magnetic storage is set to cost ¥15,540 or about $172 should it ever ship Stateside. Unfortunately, Microsoft isn't revealing its plans for that at the moment while conceding the need for more local storage for content such as software, TV shows, and movies downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace. In other words, you'll get your storage bump... someday.

@DTJ Doubtful, they are still kicking out netbooks with 160GB hard drives. Hell I think 80GB are still in production for corp low cost notebooks for that matter. 2.5" factor drives have just gotten over 640GB in standard height form factor, granted their is a no standard height 1TB. On the desktop 3.5" side I don't think they are producing anything smaller than 320GB anymore though. Just no demand for them and cost prohibitive to make desktop drives that small.
I'm starting to believe there's some sort of DLC plot going on. You aren't allowed to re-download purchased content. Microsft won't even let you transfer your legal content to an 2nd machine, yet they keep the space severely limited. So you have to delete it at some point to make room for new stuff, that digital download you purchased becomes very limited. If you really liked that DLC it'll force you to buy it AGAIN.
You can easily eat up space if you download say a TV Season. I once made the mistake of purchasing 7 seasons of The X-files for my AppleTV, those files took up 100 Gigs of space. My Apple TV CRASHED during an update and I permanently lost those files and it cost me $80! This is one of many reasons why I'm getting off the DLC bandwagon and going back to physical media.
I still want to get a 360, but I'm waiting for them to add wifi, because my router is too far for ethernet and I don't want to pay $$ for a dongle. Also, it was very easy for me to remove my 40gb hdd from the PS3 and replace it with a 500gb that I bought for $80. These 360 hdd's and wifi dongles are a complete rip off.
@Hiprocksoul
Yep, I replaced my pS3 HD with a 250 one and it took me 10 minutes.
@Hiprocksoul
Your router is more than 330 feet from your xbox?
I don't know why Microsoft doesn't just a) lower the price or b) allow us to use external hard drives. Personally, I don't see WHY one couldn't be formatted for use with an X360. I'd do it if I had the option.
'Wait, scratch that. It's just another grab for cash. I don't know what I was thinking.
I know all the 360 Arcade owners in Japan would pay OVER HALF THE COST OF A PS3 120GB (29800YEN) to buy this 250GB HD.... I know coz I asked both of them....
Just go buy a 250GB from Newegg and mod it in yourself for about 65-70$ (plus the cost of tools that any good geek should already have).
The knockoff versions on various Hong Kong retail sites have been this big for a while now... AND they're far less expensive than the Microsoft versions.
i am starting to dislike the xbox
