My biggest gripe is the Samsung 8000 series for best TV.....are you kidding me?!?!
Both the G and V Series from Panasonic blow that TV away. The line-up from Panasonic may not be as thin and sexy....but the picture quality and performance is better all around.
Not that the 8000 series is a bad TV....but TV of the year?
I haven't been voted into oblivion yet so here goes:
Looks like a lot of fanboys voted this year. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple, but other things happened this year :)
Canon 1D4 beats Nikon D3s? WTF?
Canon 1D4 beats Nikon D3s? WTF?
Apple is getting on my nerves. Are they really that big of a deal?
whats with all the mac heads voting for anything with apple in the name??? i think they even got confused on the worst gadget of the year section and just picked apple anyway :)
@hardtobelieve
"In a few categories people are choosing things just because they're Apple and they don't know anything about the other choices."
Maybe that's how ipod shuffle got Worst Gadget of the Year? maybe some people are voting for apple without really looking at which category they are voting for.
BOOOOOOOOM!
Looks Like Apple, and the iPhone have a little to worry about, According to the Engadget Pole the Moto Droid is very much indeed holding it's own against the 3GS.. Just like it "Should"
I was mad I didn't see anything about my Google Nexus One, Then remembered it was from 2010. It blows the Droid away so I can imagine it totally beats the iphone also. Great suggestions and list here guys.
Only complaint was the Display of the year. The Dell U2410 24' IPS Panel should have been in there OVER the 2209WA. I use the U2410 and love it.
@xguntherc
Seems like their is a raid against the polls right now for non-apple devices.. and thats why they pulled so closely with the IPhone
However, I do think that the raid is deserved due to the fact that this poll should have finalists... Macs and fundimentally different than other products, so when you have a Mac fan, they will choose all Mac products. When you have a PC fan...they will choose a variety of products... so its really not fair to compare things like the MacBook Pro to 10 other PC's or the IPhone 3GS to a bunch of other phone... you should take the top 2, and then have a separate vote for the finalists.
@xguntherc
24' ?
where did you get a 24 foot screen???
/end sarcasm
Reading the post made me realize that there is a big difference between people who comment on the site vs the people who doesn't. I am guessing that most ppl that come to endgadget don't leave comments, and I am guessing poll results reflects their taste/preference. I am also guessing that those people are not as tech-savy, and they probably don't know HP Envy 15 or HD2 have much better specs than their apple counterpart on the polls. It also makes me wonder about why the comment got turned off couple of weeks ago..when the more hardcore users(the posters) show dissent for what is perceived as bias toward apple, it looks bad. It can turn off casual visitors and sponsors that comes with it. So it makes sense they turned off comment for commercial reasons.
I guess we have a situation where the more tech-informed users are at odds with the site which caters to a very different demographic...it's interesting how the people who post have this love/hate thing for endgadet, and how in some ways, this site doesn't really cater to the ones who make regular posts... at least in terms of taste
btw I am not anti-apple or anything, but it's always awkward when apple gets praised even though there are other stuff that are much superior than their product. I personally think the turbo33/switchable graphics on the ASUS UL series was very innovative and deserves more attention, but the polls don't reflect that. As far as I am concerned, UL30Vt-X1 was the most exciting 13in laptop that came out last year
I was wondering, what would be a good alternative for endgadet?
@(Unverified) Please get over yourself. Not every tech savvy person conforms to your opinion. You focus on spec's, which is only a very small piece of the big picture. Many tech savvy individuals are not merely focused on specs as the be all and end all of which device is better than another. You have to look at the total user experience and how well a device integrates into a person's digital life. When looked at from that perspective Apple often excels with their products. It is not the voters that do not reflect the tech savvy, it is actually the forum posters that are way out of line with the mainstream tech savvy people that are voting. The forum posters are not, IMHO, more techie than the voters and I often think the most zealous posters are quite often very narrow minded. You sound like partisan politicians.
@schumacc
why dont you 'get over yourself'
any nimwit can see that half of the apple choices are inferior to most of the other products there.
Just take the ipad, heck, no, im sure youve already seen how bad it really is (although, if you dont know why, comment back and ill write ya a list! :))
The apple imac 27", average at best, plus all the errors with it, how is it winning best desktop?
i mean, do apple fans LIKE broken products? do they have THAT much money to just give away?
i dont know whether its engadget telling you that apple are good and you believe them (dont believe me? take a look at related posts, oh, whats that 'whats the apple tablet going to be called' yeah...) or you actually dont try out other pieces of tech, if the latter is true you shouldnt be voting on something where youve only used 1 of the products, especially because you dont know if its good...
@(Unverified)
I don't think it has anything to do with how much Engadget might like Apple. I think it has to do with Apple's ridiculously amazing ability to brand their products. I think that there are a lot of good products on these lists, but a lot that some voters probably aren't familiar with. I think the Apple products win their categories because people recognize the branding, and they do not recognize most of the other options.
@afrovballpride
this reminds me... I had a friend who had his song featured in an online contest sponsored by microsoft..I voted for my friend, and I quickly realized that the context is not about the music at all.. Chances are most people are going to vote for their friend's song, and they will not even bother to listen to any of the songs listed in the contest. I would say very few people who voted actually made an informed decision based on listening to all the songs I think the contest is set-up that way for a reason. Whoever is behind this contest don't really care about the quality of music.. they just want to get a idea as to which band has the biggest fan base.. and the votes/downloads can give you a good indication of that.
It makes sense that apple is leading in most of the polls because they have a very strong fan-culture.. you don't really have die hard asus or alienware fans, at least, not like the way apple does. I really don't know how many of the voters are well-informed about the other products in the list, but if what you are saying is true.. the poll is more of a reflection on the brand (and it's fanbase) than the quality of the product itself.
@afrovballpride Well said.
Most of the apple product are hype. for example apple never disclosed the SNR of ipod. If anyone want proof just blind fold your eyes and listen music from ipod and zune/ nokia xpress music phone.
@corylulu
I agree.. its like having 5 liberal/democrat nominee and 1 conservative/republican nominee on an election.. of course the republican nominee will win because the democrats will split their vote between 5 nominees. The poll is flawed, and it's definitely not helping the bad apple vibe that people are getting from endgadget.
Not that apple products shouldn't win, but the poll is set up in such a way that apple product will win most of the polls. It may be a mistake, but maybe the poll is set up that way for a reason?
@(Unverified)
Exactly. Apple I think should win a couple things... It could be argued that the Macbook Pro might be the laptop of the year no matter which one laptop it is stacked up against... but thats mainly because Windows laptops are very non-universal, everyone that has a PC laptop usually has a different one than you. Macbook people have and people love. Except for the ones who power supplies melt... lol
But phone of the year is no doubt the Droid. Sorry Apple, but the IPhone came out in 2007.... the 3GS was just a mild improvement.
And most Anticipated should be between the Nexus One and the IPad.... but for some reason... Nexus One isn't even on there.
But thankfully, it looks like a group of people that dislike how this polling was set up has come in at large to try to sway the polls towards the Droid. =D lol (kinda obvious being that though the entirety of the poll, Droid was about 5% behind Apple... and then one day... they were ahead.)
wait! ipod 3g is both the worst gadget and the best media player??
what?
@Milo
the worst gadget is the Shuffle but the best media player is the Touch. There's multiple lines of iPods.
droiddoes!
Wow. My phone is winning gadget of the year. That makes me happy.
Hm. Didn't know of the Engadget awards. Looks like they have some great rewards to give though... very excited about these.
Go Droid go!
Wow iPhone 3gs is catching up to smartphone of the year. I don't really understand when its the same old ui from 2007, yet the Droid does deserve this award, I would say second best smartphone would be the Palm Pre. Sorry but multitasking pwns apple's washed up OS
Why are people so hostile towards engadget about Apple bias? I see little to no bias on this site about Apple, and people who accuse engadget of pro-Apple bias actually expose their own anti-Apple bias. Being a hate-boy is just as bad as being a fanboy in my opinion.
Engadget does a lot of Apple coverage because they are a popular industry leading company with an absurd amount of buzz circling it. Naturally a tech news website is going to cover them extensively...it just makes sense.
Disclaimer: I don't own a single Apple product, because despite the fact that they are beautiful, incredibly well crafted devices they are not particularly practical for me personally.
@J Aaron
i can understand this, but seriously, every few articles has some kind of 'apple have done this' even when its not relevant, just take the ipad, it caused comments to be shut down, not an hour later and engadget were releasing an article on how it was amazing.
Was there any need for the article?
No
the ipad is the prime example of the fanboy-ism
look at it, ok its stylish, but it has no real use, i mean, it genuinley is a large iphone, yet engadget seem to be making it out to be THE must have gadget of your life.
stick the ability to multitask, bring in flash, stick a camera in and THEN ill agree its nice, but not as mind blowing as some articles make it out to be...
@HoldenMccrotch
folks like you dont get it. the device, like it or not, has the opportunity to create it s own market. why do you think tablets have been failing for the last 10 years? because they were products with no target. duh duh, yall just sound liek babies already.
Apple is a titan in the computer market, among others. If you dont like that, too damn bad. How do you have the call to say the blog didnt need to post soemthing? That doesnt even make any sense.
Look, dotn get mad because all thse other companies cant command hype and market presence liek apple- its jsut a foolish thing to complain about especially when the competition keeps fallign flat. Folks that think they way u do would be better served at putting a fire under the asses of thier competition to try to be able to open/expand/create a market.
until, all we hear is whah-whah-wah, whah-wha, wha-whga wha
I really thought apple should have won every single award! I thought this was an apple blog?
I know apple don’t make stand alone digital cameras, but there’s a camera in the iPhone. Surly that should at least have made the short list??
And Nokia don’t get a mention in the “2009 Engadget Awards - GPS Device of the Year” award? Turn by turn world Navigation for how many devices?
I’m losing a lot of faith in Engadget.
And how many people voted for the Droid because it wasn't the iPhone?
@Greg7388
i voted for the droid because it is BETTER than the iphone... i actually had a hard decision with the pre being there too.
@masta vaan Ah, yes... better. How could I have forgotten? It's got more apps, a better multitouch screen, iTunes syncing and ringtone creation, and video editing.
... wait
I love how everyone calls engadget fanboy's of Apple in a democratic poll to see what people think - where both the nominations and results are not picked by engadget. Also the lame argument of x other devices vs 1 Apple product. Possibly if every company put effort into one great design, rather than spamming us with slightly different models we could have a fairer poll - and much better gadgets! If Apple has a better product - it should win, regardless of bias.
Please stop bitching and get voting!
@cogzilla1
the whole idea is choice and competition... you can choose the best OS for you, and the hardware and carrier it runs on. you can choose your accesories. choice is power.
I feel most of the votes on apple products are either fabricated or voted by users without brain
@svkndv
So everyone that voted for Apple (read: didn't vote like you) doesn't have a brain? Do you live in a cave? Apple products are pretty darn popular - especially with tech people.
So after all the Apple-haters did their whining, we come back and see the iPhone 3GS being beat by the Droid. Will they cry that Engadget and it's readership are biased now? Nope, cause their product is in the lead.
Now that's being bias.
How come whenever I read the comments on an Apple post, it's just endless amounts of people bitching about Apple and their products and bashing the editors for liking Apple products, and when I go to the polls, where THE READERS DECIDE, they're winning every category?
Commenters: Either stop being hypocritical or Apple defenders should show themselves (and not in the most fanboy-esque tone ever).
this is not very relevant, but... actually, since this is an apple website, it is...
i saw and ad while watching LOST (lost ftw!) and it was by att. they replaced the att customer's phones with verizon phones for and experiment, and apparently all hell broke loose. i just wonder how much those people got payed to say the droid sucks... i can imagine that in reality, the people would be: " why am i actually getting service, wtf???", and " what? why is this actually more usefull than my godphone???" and so on... i had to laugh at the ad...
Laura,
Is it possible for you to post a new gadget of the year without Apple products. I suspect ballot stuffing/increased level of fanboyism. One should not merit the quality of an item based on its logo. I mean come on the palm pre is obviously the most innovative out of all of the devices. I distinctly remember last year a lot of nerds were pissed that only a video camera and a compass were added to the iphone. Are you telling me that these same people find a digital compass to be the greatest most innovative add on to cellphone of last year?
Well it's obvious that the Apple trolls have skewed the results. I highly doubt that the accuracy of any of the categories with Apple products listed.
Wow these comments get boring fast
"Apple Fan boys" etc etc, How does this not make you biased for voting for anything thats not apple by default, you constantly show your contempt for anything Apple (and this site for being pro-apple) yet you're still here commenting on any article with the tag Apple, Jobs, or iPhone. The reason the iPhone is found in the games poll is because Apple specifically advertised the iPod/iPhone as gaming devices, and if you actually ever played some of the best games on them you'd realised why its there (Sandstorm, Nova Online etc). And for the record, No, i didnt vote apple in the gaming poll.
