Dell Mini 5 earns FCC approval, AT&T 3G coverage assured
Remember those rumors back in the day that Dell's Android-powered Streak MID -- the device that would later be revealed as the Mini 5 -- would be manufactured by Qisda? Well, we've got some pretty solid proof of that now that it's hit the FCC under Qisda's name. What you see on the left is the label submitted in today's filing for a device called the Qisda M01M; on the right, you have a shot from that pictorial of a device in Shenzhen of the same name. Look pretty much identical? Yeah, we've definitely got the Mini 5 here, and it's described in the RF test reports as a "mobile internet device" with support for WiFi plus full HSPA on WCDMA bands II and V (that's the coverage needed by AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus, by the way) plus EDGE on the same frequencies. We're sure that this version's got a few more bands for user outside North America, too, but seeing how the FCC generally doesn't care about them, Qisda's gone light on the details. Anyhow, this works out nicely for a release later this year, doesn't it?

Any chance the 3G connection will work with non-Windows OS's?
Wow..I'm a moron! Nevermind..."Andorid" :)
Damn i cant wait for this, everything i want from a tablet! :D
move over ipad and slate, ive found my lovechild!
@HoldenMccrotch I would still prefer Notion Ink Adam compared to this overpriced slate.

Really? Why do the tablet gods hate Verizon?
@hurstkb
Verizon must be a major league ball buster when it comes to hardware contract negotiations and AT&T must be Mr. Softee. No other reason for all the good phones going to AT&T and T-Mobile.
You're really pissing me off Verizon. You better pull a rose out of your butt (and it ain't the Nexus One).
@Why should I have all the fun
CDMA is an antiquated technology (exaggeration) but it is predominantly read: almost exclusively, by Sprint and Verizon. If one wants to produce a device that is compatible with the largest number of networks in the world EVEN if you wont have 3G on all of em, the cheapest and easiest to implement would be probably be GSM. That and verizon may be a huge nutbuster lol
@hurstkb Its not anyone hating its Verizon as such, its verizon hating the global standard! CDMA is pretty dead outside of the USA!
So do you design a product for a small market or design it for GSM/3G whos market is huge!
hope this is coming to the uk
@psycros
Correcto!
Any speculation that there will be full blown phone support? Will it be a large smartphone?
@viper24
No Speculation, Dell has said specifically that it's a phone
@ClippinWings
Hmmm... engadget has mislead me... they said it was a tablet :(
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/28/dell-mini-5-tablet-prototype-shows-up-as-m01m-in-shenzhen-blac/
@viper24
It is mainly a tablet with secondary phone features
It can take calls, sms and supports 3G, but its main purpose is to be a multimedia/internet tablet.
@Acey STOAKED
@ClippinWings
Are you sure? I was looking for that information recently and never found it.
Last I heard, they were still trying to figure out what people wanted to use it for most.
-Taylor
@Taylor Yes Taylor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf5EsGs-y4g
that should answer all of your questions
@ClippinWings
This is what I've been waiting for. iPad? lol. If this thing has a way to get video to an external display at 720p or higher (and there is a "mystery dock" underneath the device...) then I'll be buying one on day one.
It's AT&T, 3G is never assured.
@Bedlight Ha! Touche.
@Bedlight
Very good touch
@Bedlight
HAHA nice one !!
@Bedlight
I wish they would try with Sprint, since Sprint is already in the 4G area. Sprint can cover 4G and 3G (just in case your area doesn't support 4G) but that's what's great about Sprint, they make you able to switch if 4G is detected, without getting knocked offline (amazing, right?).
I don't know if it's just me though. Btw, they also have amazing coverage here in the US, I was on an air card, and I went all the way from Florida to New Jersey, to Ohio (through the mountains, still covered, but with some roaming here and there) and all the way back down to Florida, got kicked off only once or twice, when we actually had to go THROUGH the mountain itself in a tunnel.
@MrPacMan36
What the hell are u talking about...sprint has horrible coverage, ecspecially here in NJ. In fact it's so bad almost all of the fire depts. In my county dnt even bother using the state contracted phones...hav a feeling tht sprint will b loosing their state contract soon
I hope it doesn't have to actually be tethered to a contract with AT&T. I'd love to get one just as tablet/entertainment device.
We need a Maemo equivalent PRonto!
Uggg.. ATT? no thanks Dell.
I seriously can't wait replace my 3GS with this thing.
Any news on a release date? I'm almost willing to suck Dell's dick to get this thing. D:
@JaysFreaky Whoa there, you don't need to go to those lengths lol. Check the related posts side bar, Micheal Dell says it'll be out in a couple of months.
@NYNY I know, but I can't wait!! >_O
@NYNY
Yeah, but Micheal Dell seems like a nice guy... ;)
-Taylor
@JaysFreaky
If there's a female Dell, i'd be more than to do a her to get a Mini5, but a guy Dell, nah i'm ok.
@torch29 His wife is pretty hot actually. haha
EEEEEEEEEE!!!!! :D
The title says: "AT&T 3G coverage assured".
See anything wrong here?
@s2m0
Nope, I have ATT and always have 3G service all day long, even when I travel across the state too! I really like it as we cant have wifi at work.
@s2m0
I've never had a dropped call or had less than great 3G coverage with AT&T either. I don't have an iPhone though.
@s2m0
Nope, I always have 3G on my LG Shine
Even within the solid concrete walls of my school where other people can't get signal, I have full 3G
if this thing seriously acts like a phone (all signs point to yes) then i'm going to have a very hard time deciding between this and the sprint supersonic as i'm also dieing for some 4G
@NGnerd For me it's the Supersonic all the way. Sprint has a great network and Wimax will make the phone future-proof. Plus a 4.3" screen is a bit more manageable. I'm liking the aesthetics of the HTC better too...
@tobyrare i'd like to stick with sprint, but after reading the 4G clearwire review i'm just not trusting wimax (plus it seems like the crowd is leaning towards LTE in 2012). It's good to have hard choices
@NGnerd True that, but if the Supersonic really comes out this spring/summer even if you sign a 2 year you'd still be okay to make a change in 2012 however things play out. Plus, I'm not even expecting to be able to have 4g coverage for a while in San Diego but I'd much rather be on Sprint's strong 3g here in the meantime instead of AT&T's oversaturated congestathon.
So how long will we have to wait for a version that works on T-Mo? Or Verizon, Sprint, etc? Please don't lock this in to just one carrier, Dell!
I have a netbook & Samsung Q1, The Mini 5 is really what I want. Android + Apps + GPS+ Camera+ 5" Screen and Phone Calls.
This would be mounted in my car for media & gps. Mr. Dell, thank you!
I'd prefer a "real" OS, but this is so compact, and the hardware features are very impressive. Definitely blurring the line between computer and smartphone.
If this is AT&T exclusive though, I'm not touching it with a ten foot stylus.
@Ducman69
A 5" Windows 7 tablet that makes calls?
@TheGM Of course not, I'd prefer a real OS, but thats why I said this is so compact its understandable you can't fit that much horsepower under the hood like you could a 10".
You can even watch the CES footage - for a glimpse second if you look at the lockscreen, you can see AT&T on it.
This going to AT&T really makes me think that Verizon has something up its sleeve, and not just the nexus one release in coming months. As a Verizon customer I really hope that they are going to have something in the wings ready to counter this device because its downright sexy. I know they claim to have android devices on the way, and Motorola seems to be apart of that, but a device like this would fall in nicely. Especially with its new "gadgety" clients it received after dropping the Motorola Droid. C'Mon Big Red, step up to the plate, nows the time!!!
This really sucks, I'm fed up with At&t getting all the stupid phones for Android. Why can't you even get a REAL ANDROID PHONE? I have a crappy Dell PC theirs no way I'm not upgrading to this so called Dell Android phone. At&t isn't really doing their job getting Android phones. Just have to wait for MWC 2010. If I don't see a GOOD ANDROID PHONE FOR AT&T I'm Canceling my Contract FOR GOOD.
