Sony Ericsson Aspen caught on video, loving life with WinMo 6.5.3
Chances are we're missing something incredibly awesome being said in this foreign-language video, but we can probably guess what Mobile-review Sergey Kuzmin is saying: "I've got the Sony Ericsson Aspen and you don't. Life is grand." Okay, so maybe we're a little jealous, but at least he was kind enough to give us a brief look at the hardware out in the wild, showing off some of Windows Mobile 6.5.3's menus and sizing it up with some of Apple, Nokia, and RIM's offerings. Let's not waste any more time -- the video you seek is after the break.

what a shiny screen
@nicholasphan
lol yes it is
@nicholasphan What a beautiful phone!
@Everkeen
I have an E71 and I'm starting to get jealous.
@nicholasphan Definitely, The quad-band phone's candy bar design features a sleek body with the latest update from Windows Mobile with version 6.5.3. The 2.4 inch QVGA touchscreen and full keyboard offer some interesting options with a strong eco-conscious approach to packaging and design. This one is really elegant, Aspen Details: http://bit.ly/sony-ericsson-aspen-details
That small screen was looking much clearer and seemed larger on the promotional material. If they want such a small screen, they have to make it a good one. The form factor is quite nice though, I like the keyboard layout and overall size.
@technokimchi: I'm not a huge fan of the QWERTY candybar but I can see why people would like it. However, if you're going to develop such an old-style handset, at least kill that huge freaking bezel. Seriously, miniaturization hasn't progressed that much in the years since this was a popular form factor?
How still mobile-review get the latest mobiles from SE after the war Eldar started on SE mobiles ?!
@Jabriiiz: Maybe because SE is more interested in selling phones than being petulant children?
yuck a stylus. i have come to hate those because i have an iphone
@HAWKZ
because you hate precision?
@JW
no i just prefer a finger over a pen.
@HAWKZ
Oh how I pity your ignorant view. I'm sorry man.
@HAWKZ You know you can use your finger if you want, right? So you basically hate having a stylus even as an option.
Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is designed for finger-friendliness everywhere.
@Nafjan
o thats cool!
I think its very sexy even besides the tiny screen. Not my bag but I really do admire it.
@SParklingCYaNide
Same here. The phone looks great and that media player is slick. I really like what Sony Ericsson is doing with its GreenHeart line. Seems like money well spent rather than every other cookie cutter Walkman/Cybershot phone out there.
I really do not like WinMo 6.5.3's softkey bar on the bottom. That thing is monstorous, and on that tiny screen, it just makes the screen even smaller. Good job MS, you made it "finger friendlier" at the cost of making it less productive.
@SDreamer if u have a good screen it works amazing
i have winmo 6.5.5 on my tp2 and it is amazing but on this size i would have liked 6.5. they could have made the screen a lot bigger
@SDreamer Actually it makes no difference in screen usage over vanilla WinMo 6.5, as the top bar has some it's space cut off and it's added to the bottom bar to allow a larger target area to click on.
And available screen real estate is still exactly the same.
What a pretty phone! The keyboard layout is great.
@norseman I agree I like the looks just not who makes it I think sony erickson is a good brand there phones are crappy p.s. I spelled that wrong
Pathetic...
the phone reminds me a lot of E61/i
----------------------
apple offerings? (aside from the iphones. ) i didn't know they have qwerty device offerings..
Really slick UI. Hopefully they'll implement this on some more powerful phones with larger screens lol. It's a nice phone, and I'd use it for business (if I needed it).
I didn't know Sony Ericsson makes WinMo phones! Since when did they do this?
Since the HTC sourced Xperia X1. Unless your question is not serious.
@mikmik111
it might be Scny Ericsson
@Patlex No I'm serious. I'm confused though, That XPeria came from HTC but on Sony Ericsson brand?
Anyway I'm surprised because I used to have a lot of Sony Ericsson phones that I know, and they dont have WinMo in it.
@mikmik111 This ridiculous theory never fails to die.
HTC made the phone much like they have done for many other brands in the past. That doesn't make it an HTC phone. Do you call the iPhone the "Foxconn iPhone", for instance?
Everything in the X1 was there because SE wanted them to be in there. Very little R&D was invested into that phone from HTC's side.
WINMO 7 WHERE ARE YOU!!
@fillup
I wonder how much of that menu is SE and how much is 6.5.3?
Those russians do really seem to like their Windows Mobile. What's up with that out of curiousity?
@vedichymn
The lack of blogs constantly telling them that another manufacturer's product is better for you even when it might not be?
How this phone is exciting to anyone is beyond me.
A sytlus, really? Is this 1999? At least SE finally pulled their head out and is starting to make phones with micro-usb and 3.5" audio jacks.
Only took losing around a zillion dollars and all their market share for them to get there...
It's too bad, 4 of my last 6 phones were SE, but when they kept making "walkman" phones with that stupid and useless port making the phone more of a "cordman" since you couldn't just plug your headphones in without an adaptor. I went to Nokia and now my Nexus mother loving 1...
I can't understand a word he is saying.
@bob e Since the Xperia X1 phone...they also have the Xperia X2 that runs WinMo...
So far none of them are going to support WinMo 7 when it comes out
For some reason this phone reminds me of the Samsung intrepid. Which I actually liked.
Again with the crappy QVGA screen? Fail!
Is that multitasking page part of win mobile 6.5.3? or is it a sony thing?
@unknown714 It's not a multitasking page per se, it just shows Sony Ericsson's "panels", i.e. its more of a shiny application launcher.
haha i understand russian
it's a green phone too..... save the planet!
it's a noble thing from the greenheart team..... :D
Impressive OS, kudos Microsoft. Glad they take the layout seriously, maybe they stand a chance now!
Nice phone.
One of the benefits of winmo is the multitude of form factors...
The iphone is "you can have any shape as long as it's this shape"...and I kinda like the iphone but I also kinda like individuality...
to each his own
Apple + Google will kill WinMo.
I've seen big bezels in my life *cough* Kindle *cough*, but this one is extremely noticeable (so much, in fact, I originally thought that the OS glitched up and put the bottom bar in the middle of the screen).
With a screen that small and such a low resolution, they should have just put a 6.5 build on it. The buttons at the bottom take a quarter of the screen area
Wow, this phone actually looks really cool! (And its not that bad looking!)
Excellent looking phone. Seems to be performing nicely as well.
Shows that keyboard productivity can look good too.
