From a pure specification standpoint, it's hard to knock HTC's
HD2. Scratch that -- it's
impossible to knock the HD2. A 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is just the tip of the iceberg, with the icing on the cake being the 800 x 480 resolution display, 5 megapixel camera, GPS and a downright stunning overall design. Unfortunately, phones are made or broken by the software that's loaded on, and Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't exactly the most nimble mobile OS on the market right now. That said, we're confident that more than a few of you have unloaded your savings accounts in order to posses one of the sexiest cellular telephones this world has ever seen, and now that the deed is done, we're eager to hear your opinions on how the phone really stacks up. Are you happy with the performance? Did you expect it to be snappier given the monstrous CPU? Would you have held out for WinMo 7 if Sir Patience would've allowed you? No need to go easy on anything -- tell it like it is in comments below.
Way too much hating on WinMo. So many more options than most OS's & if they can get WinMo7 to multi task like I'm sure they will, it will be a beast. HTC+WinMo7 multi app= sex.
windows>android
wow that was meant to be an arrow not windows is greater than android
Sweet Phone
Add/Change
USB 3.0
Micro HDMI 1.4
Bluetooth v3+HS
802.11N 2.4GHz&5GHz
Micro SDXC
Verizon LTE
ROM 1GB
RAM 4GB
I think the only thing to change about the HD2 is its near future. If Microsoft gives it its well deserved WinMo7 OTA than this phone is perfection. Other than that having 6.5 (no matter how sexy a job HTC's Sense does) is a huge........huge letdown.
the HD2 is perfect already with winmo...no idea what everyone is whining about android
LOL!
Ha! all those android, webos, symbians users are showing their jelousy. They want to change the HD2 Instead of accepting their phone and OS are not up to the challenge.
for all the winmo haters out there there sure are A LOT of SATISFIED winmo users of the HD2 on this thread.
i guess winmo is not as bad as many make it out to be.
nice!!
can anyone recommend me a place to purchase the hd2...Im in NYC,
Android + color e-ink display + solar cells on the back + Wifi on/off button
Future versions should have built in projector, physically flexible
I'd make it £199. All these flashy new phones are far too expensive for me to even consider!
HTC really need to come up with another design like the excellent 180 degree swivel screen which they had with HTC Universal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Universal
I would make it run on Verizon's network. Then I could have one. Other than that, maybe a bit more internal storage.
My Omnia, with WinMo6.5.3, SPB MS3.5, and all a custom ROM by Lioryte from Modaco, is an amazing phone. I can only imagine a snapdragon powered 800x480 beast with those same advantages.
Give it a slide out QWERTY and I'll buy it in an instant!
Nothing to change
1. OS Window Mobile 6.5 much better and organized the android and iPhone.
2. Body Size gives an new feel. Slim !!
3. Screen has wide resolution and a CAPACATIVE touch screen on Win Mo !!! never seen before on WinMo
4. UI HTC Sense had done a good work. Easy to use ...
5. Market Place is new but sure its going to better than Appstore of apple
I am sure HD2 has take WinMo to a new way ...
take off WinMo and put andriod on it. WInMo is a failure. hands down.
@JDUBB
its so easy to hate on winmo. it sucks this, it blows that. when it comes down to it, other than being a little old...can you explain exactly why it is a failure? stay does of fail at. and what can it not do that other os's can. on the other hand I can easily think of a number of things that It CAN do that others can't. go ahead and explain.
Android
I hate to say this, but, I would make it run a different operating system… Or if not, just give it a different UI
if they could increase the battery life while keeping the same form factor I would be on heaven.
also I agree , the bezel on the camera is a bit Sharp, but that's just knit picken
Even though this is basically impossible, I'd put WebOS on it
Dual Sim... Maybe!!!
i personally dont care for windows mobile, though i know it is a useful and otherwise powerful OS, but ill wait for the supersonic, because i think that android fits me better.
S-S-S-S-S-STOP THE CONNECTION!!!
WebOS
It is funny that many people will dismiss it without even having one.
As a business user of smartphones for many years all I can say is - chill out.
After all it is a gadget and a tool. I was using Palms and Pocket PC's, Blackberries and iPhone's - for years. All have good and bad sides.
Android is not on my radar at all because of lack of corporate support.
iPhone is a good tool and I was happily using it for a year. But it is too does not fit into corporate world. Just some executives, perhaps, if you don't have strong policies.
Blackberry is unbeatable tool for business, BES 5.0 is really good for people like me, who have to support large fleets of devices.
WinMob is good and reliable tool with reasonable corporate support from latest MMES server.
You see we need tunnels to our networks and we need to minimise expences.
I have HD2 at the moment, typing is not that good, and screen sometimes will not obey me, but it is a huge improvement on what was before.
And I don't need to use iTunes, just copy my files to microSD card.
Not all people are looking at Android/iPhone at all because of reasons, I have stated and with BB's or WinMo, I can deploy 500 devices in a matter of days. Try it with iPhone or Android.
I am no OS fan, I am a fan of myself, and value my time. In corporate world Android/iPhone are the loosers and BB and WinMob are the best.
I have a Telstra version and now 3g on AT&T. :) I slapped on a custom rom and bam this thing flies! http://www.xdaroms.com if you really want to jail break your HTC HD2 device!
Android
GSM with AT&T 3G bands
Tactile keyboard
With those three things, I'd pay anything for this.
Hey all.. tbh, nothing to do with any previous posts, but I just thought I'd let anyone in the UK who's thinking of getting the HD2 in on this (mainly because O2 pi**ed me off with their crappy deals): if you go to buymobilephones.net you can get the HD2 with unlimited data and a decent number of txts and minutes for £30 a month, with an up front phone cost of £20.... but if you use the 3rd party site Quidco.com, you can get £25 cash back as well as the above deal - so phone becomes free!

How many of you actual HD2 users use the cab to reduce the sensitivity, or even find the screen being over sensitive an issue?
First post
I've been an HD2 user for two months now. This is my first smartphone, upgraded from a Samsung G600. It's actualy a bit funny when you think about, because playing with my flatmate's Iphone 3G was the reason why I developed a lust for a smartphone after dismissing the whole concept as an overpriced gimmick (yeah, I can be a bit of a luddite I guess). So the Iphone opened my eyes, but from my experience of their pricing in the desktop section (assumed they overprice all their products in the same way) and forcing me to use Itunes I knew I wanted something that would be at least as capable as the Iphone without being an Apple product.
When you look at the spec sheet this phone is nothing short of amazing. The 4.3 inch display is my favourite point. Both the size and the resolution mean that IMHO this is the best web browsing experience out there. @ Someone commenting negatively on Opera 9.7, I can't see how in what way it is worse than safari. Pages render fast and most importantly, because of the high res my eyes do not get tired. This also applies to PDF readers, reading Word documents, One Note and so on. Obviously video playback as well. Though I could use a suggestion for a PDF reader other than Acrobat since it can be slow with longer documents. 4-5 pages and it is snappy, 30-40 page journal article and the user experience is less stellar, perfectly good for reading the whole thing, but rendering pagescould be faster when you just want to skim through an article. I am not sure though whether that is an issue with the phone/software or just the fact that even a powerful phone still can't render 30-40 pages in 1-2 seconds.
The obvious downside to the screen size is the size of the device. I never had a problem with it, to me this is a matter of personal preference. It is slim, has just about the right weight (not too heavy, not too light), paired with nice design and the metal battery cover it feels like proper, high end piece of gadgetry.
Sense is nice, though at once in a while it does feel like it is slowing the phone down. Even the parts of WinMo which are not covered by sense are still perfectly useable. I do have slender fingers which helps, but paired with the screen size I never had any problems navigating menus even when the old PC style folder trees rear their head.
I use it mainly for web browsing, email, music playback, IM, calendar, pdf reading; few phone calls and texts compared to most users I guess so I can't say much about the strictly phone side. I never had any problems, but I have seen reports of problems with the SMS app.
What I would change?
Obvious one is battery life. I guess having Wifi on almost all the time, max brightness settings for the screen, music player running n the background almost all the time, would kill any battery, but I still can't get used to how often I have to charge this thing after using a dumbphone for the last 10 years.
Not enough storage space for programs, the phone comes with preinstalled apps, some of them of dubious utility (at least to me). But generaly the space for installing stuff on the device is too limited for this class and price range of hardware. The phone noticeably slowed down with increase usage of memory, and you have to think twice about which things you should install on the storage card/inbuilt memory.
Also after instaling some UI tweaks, which were supposedly 100% tested (no negative comments on the XDA forums) I did get a few crashes, slow downs, though it was also before I freeed up some of the internal memory, so this might be the issue.
The only thing that disapoints me is the camera. The fix did not change much for me, pics can have a pink or dark blue hue over them for no apparent reason. When you consider that the camera protrudes at the back (which is slightly annoying, can't put it on the desk and use it with one hand without the phone wobbling) at leats they could have made it worth it.
Summing this up, I would advise anyone to buy this phone if you think about upgrading. I can understand why people would hate WinMos interface on small resistive screens with shite hardware running it, but it seems HD2 is not one of those phones.
I don't know whther it will get WinMo 7 upgrade and frankly I don't care. .I got it from Vrigin Mobile on an 18 month contract, 25 pounds per month, 80 pounds for the phone, 500 minutes, 3000 texts unlimited data. By the time my contract is up it will be June 2011 and a perfect time to see what is available. WinPhone 7 didn't really convince me (the fact they don't allow different skins is a big no for me right now, that UI does not appeal to me at all). If you get it now, you have a beast of a phone, and by the time your contract is up, you will know more whether WinPhone 7 is for you or just a huge flop.
Very Happy HD2 user
Add a vertical sliding qwerty like the Palm Pre/Samsung i730, but with bigger and more spaced keys for one handed use, being something that anyone including those with big fingers can use. I HATE having to switch to landscape to type texts, and don't care for having to use a software qwerty even though it seems the best one with the biggest buttons would be found on the HD2s big screen. Have some sort of rambooster when it gets lagged, you can clean out/refresh the memory and/or have it automatically do it. An option to have a higher capacity battery, as well as more capacity storage space.
Oh I forgot, to also perhaps some more tactile buttons that one could use to map functions, for the camera to take pics with, instead of having to guess where the button is on the screen. Also, an optional dpad (as long as it doesn't make the screen smaller). Oh and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let the HD2 come to VERIZON WIRELESS! It looks AMAZING!
One other thing, please improve the video and picture quality, so that it looks more on par with a regular camera, instead of having the pink tint for example, and a better flash and zoom.. preferably a camera without sharp edges.
The SmartFlo looks amazing and fast! Don't ruin it with Android or Windows 7s yucky interface! NOT AT ALL persuaded to get a phone with Windows 7 based on the demo unit..
One last thing.add 500gb capacity and I won't bother with an Archos 5 internet tablet.
