While the list of tweaks is absurdly small in the latest iPhone OS update, we know that some of you simply have to run the latest and greatest OS at all times regardless of risk. Fortunately for you, the Dev-Team has stepped to with a new version of
PwnageTool (v3.1.5 for Mac OS X) that handles the update to
iPhone OS 3.1.3 with aplomb while preserving your device's ultrasn0w unlock and jailbroken state. As usual, there's a litany of precautions depending upon the device you own so hit the source link and read the dev-team's words carefully before proceeding. With a little luck, patience, and undue stress, improved accuracy of your device's reported battery level can be yours -- Huzzah?
iPod touch 3G support or not?
@Cydoniac
Any device with new bootrom is not supported. So, iPod Touch 3G and week ~40 or later iPhone 3GS will not work.
Pwnage Tool Compatibility
* iPhone EDGE aka iPhone 2G
* iPhone 3G
* iPhone 3GS, old bootrom
* iPod Touch 1G
* iPod Touch 2G, old bootrom
@Cydoniac
If you have ipod Touch 3rd Gen, you only option ATM is the tethered jailbreak via blackra1n.
@thunderbollock
Well someone needs to lead by example around here.
I've been waiting for a windows version since 3.0.1. Where's the love for the Windows users??
@m4xn00b
there will never be a windows release. If you want to jb 3.1.3 wait for an updated blackrain.
@m4xn00b
Pwnage tool always was, and always will be Mac only.
@m4xn00b
quickpwn is the Windows version of pwnagetool, but they don't always release a parallel version when the new pwnage tool comes out.
if you're already jailbroken, then you can just SHIFT-restore and select a jailbroken firmware and flash right thru itunes.
@logicbombde
Hi, I'm a real newbie so be warned. I just got a 3GS and successfully downloaded blackra1n jailbreak on the phone. Stupidly, I didn't read about 3.1.3 and when there was a popup offer to download it, I went ahead, and it seems to have nullified the Blackra1n software (when I put in my T Mobile SIM, the iphone sees there is a SIM there but I cannot get connectivity. In other words, I can still download apps from the app store when I am near a wireless network, but will not make phone calls without SIM.
Question: Am I locked out, out of luck, only choice is AT&T, or do I have options? How can I get the jailbreak to stick in 3.1.3?
Thanks in advance,
GA (comcast)
Im still waiting for 4.0
I see no point having to reload all my cracked ap.....oops that just slipped out.
"list of tweaks is absurdly small"
Sure. But with one of the bullet points being "restore tethering for simlock free iphones" I'd say the upgrade is substantial.
@remmelt If you have a jailbroken phone, why not just enable it yourself without upgrading to save the hassle of reinstalling all your apps and themes?
Question for those of you who have jailbroken your iPhone. Has someone implemented support for AVRCP? Still the one thing missing for me from the "legit" iPhone software.
Imagine 4.0 coming out and shit's gonna be hackproof. No JB at all.
Like ps3 having no games, so will my ipod touch
@fighterfelix I would probably sell my iPhone and buy another device if I couldn't JB it.
@fighterfelix
4.0 will have been written by human beings (presumably — we don't REALLY know what goes on behind Apple's 14268 layers of keycarded blast doors); therefore, it will be hackable. It may or may not take longer than usual, but unless Apple somehow addresses all of the usability and functionality issues that cause people to jailbreak (which I guarantee they won't), it will end up jailbroken.
I'm so tired of this "cat n mouse" game that Apple likes to play with the devs out there. The fact that Apple doesn't let people who paid for their phones to actually "own" them really pisses me off. Had I known that I would have looked seriously at other options. Oh well, now I am just waiting for something really good on AT&T to entice me away from the fruity phone...Android or WM
@dand
They don't want people to jailbreak because then they can install cracked apps - simples.
@cashclientel
Yeah, we all know that Apple doesn't like to lose money...
i excluded apple news. why do i get this apple related product news?
@gyros I guess because there is no "Apple" throughout the whole article – neither in the text nor in the keywords. Blame the editor (but for the sake of peace on earth, the universe and everything, remember the rules you've learned in "Commenting on Engadget: A human's guide")
Not worth the upgrade vs chances of backup not working and losing my contacts (which i cannot back up or update to sim card...yes i still use a sim card). Will wait for 4.0.
At this point I think I will wait for the iphone4.0 release. My current phone works fine on t-mobile UK. Not worth the sweat trying to get the perfect setup again.
@RealdudePRO I agree. I'm still using 3.0..
Try Sn0wbreeze 3.1.4 for Windows. JB my 3GS old boot rom a couple of days ago and it worked fine. Also preserved the baseband for unlocking. I updated because Cydia wasn't working after a bad repo err msg. Hey, Windows love still there with Sn0wbreeze. It was a breeze to JB!
Has anyone tried this yet? I'm unable to get it to recognise the IPSW (automatic or in expert mode) Got a iPhone 3G
Great news, but I'm going to wait for Blackra1n. I guess I spoiled by how easy, quick and painless that jailbreak was :)
i have a 3gs that is already completely unlocke d and jailbroken , i dont see any big reason to upgrade now , anybody have any reasons that i dont know about?
@eld555
no not really,
but a decent option if you happened to buy a used iphone where the previous owner did you the "favor" up updating to the latest FW
so will this reset my ipod touch (as in deleting all apps jailbroken/not)?
HAIL JOBS!
Hey, I'm Jack the Newbie around here, but I think this is the right place to ask my question. Just got a 16GB Iphone 3GS (3.1.2) with the intention of unlocking (my T Mobile contract runs for another year). My laptop "saw" my Iphone and offered the chance to upgrade to 3.1.3, which I jumped on without knowing that 3.1.3 aces out any jailbreak software. Am I now screwed about jailbreaking the phone, or what's the best course of action here?
Thx, Comcast
