Samsung's first 'Super AMOLED' phone to debut next week?
Remember Samsung's new 3.3-inch AMOLED with embedded touch-controls? If not then you'd better go back and brush up on your display tech because the first Samsung phone using the new 800 x 480 pixel "Super AMOLED" display is said to be getting a reveal next week at the big Mobile World Congress show. The panel is claimed to be five times "clearer" and offer 20% better visibility when used outside -- the biggest weakness of existing AMOLED devices like the Zune HD and Nexus One. We're also going to guess that the new device will be running Samsung's new Bada OS at the time of the reveal -- but that's not exactly a stretch.

Lets see what samsung has got in for us this time... looks like a very high res screen... so lets hope for the best.
Seems like Samsung just gets better and better. I think we need a rival for Samsung so the pricing will be easier for us, customers.
@Techie: No. All we need is Sony to make panels so the price of the Samsung panels will seem reasonable in comparison. They already accomplish that with their TV's.
@Ruben
The reason Sony is more expensive is because of their technology. I own an LCD Multi Function Display computer monitor from Sony with 1600:1 optical contrast ratio. The best I have seen from Samsung and others is 1000:1 optical contrast ratio. So what these other companies do is give you dynamic contrast ratio so the number seems high. Sony does the same in their advertising to counter those other companies, but in reality, Sony's technology is superior. So in a lot of cases (not all!), you get what you pay for (especially in Sony's case).
samsung should stick to making the best tv's, leave the phone making to the big dogs
@bigdonny that's why they are making phone displays as good as tv's
@bigdonny Well they are the second largest phone manufacturer after Nokia....
Thought sucking in the smartphone market. While Nokia got the 40% there world second largest manufacturer got lower market share than HTC.
Samsung have had superb hardware since Nokia started chilling after N95, but their suppoer for devices have been really bad. Example comparing omnia HD and N97.
Still can't wait to see what they have in store for us. If some manufacturer can nowadays make somethign really special in HW side it's Samsung.
@bigdonny
Seems to me that Samsung always makes quality, attractive handsets. Where they need to leave things alone is with the OS. They need to continue to advance the hardware but leave the software to "the big dogs"
@dand
Samsung is just like Sony in the 60s-80s. their high quality product keeps getting more and more expensive after gaining market trust and market shares. To the point that today, Sony is Samsung's main rival, and Samsung is winning by a mile.
is it just more or do ninjas really love OLEDs?
From what we can see in the picture, ninjas are taking care of these OLED screens. What could possibly go wrong?
Here's the screen in action:

I'm all for Bada if it kills off Samsung's TouchWiz nonsense. That stuff's garbage. Pumped for more (and better) AMOLED screens :D
You can just kill the TouchWiz UI in the options screen. Did it on my Omnia 2.
@Maeztro
I ended up ROMing my Omnia with 6.5 and adding SPB Mobile Shell (which is great) before I lost the USB attachment, since I wasn't really digging Winmo 6.1
SPRINT!!!! PLEASE!!!!
Yet another cool device crippled by something cheap, like that "bada os"
It could be the galaxy 2, which would be as good or better than the nexus one.
Hopefully this new screen doesn't affect power consumption. I want smartphones with better battery life, not shorter.

i dont see the problem, wy dont they just backlit the oled-displays? all these companies got ultraexpertese in that area. Enlighten me PLZ!
@mrkuk87 OLED cells are self emiting. There is no back lighting.
@mrkuk87
AMOLEDs Consume much less power than a normal OLED.
Extremely cool screen. I'd like to see it in a wide variety of non-Sammy phones as well.
"offer 20% better visibility when used outside"
20% increase on 0 is still 0!
Have you even seen, let alone used, an OLED outside? Stop spreading the myth. The Nexus One beats any laptop LCD I have used when it comes to outdoor visibility. It beats a lot of LCD phones I have used as well. Yes, there is room for improvement, but it is certainly not unusable.
Damn, she's hot!
3.3" with 16:9 aspect ratio is too small for smartphone (superphone in Google terminology) these days.
You can't call something 3.3 inches long "Super". Just ask your girlfriend.
@mappo LOL
Why the hate for OLED in sunlight. You guys seem pretty passive aggressive against it. Even in your comparison between the DROID (LCD) and the Nexus One (OLED), both looked the same in outdoor use.....horrible. So lets stop the OLED passive aggressiveness, shall we?
i know OLEDS are selfemitting, but why boost it up with some ledbacklight? would it be possible?
20% better outdoor visibility of non-existent visibility is... still non-existent visibility.
I thought the Zune HD used OLED, not AMOLED. Anyone knows the difference between AMOLED and OLED?
@rlawlals
Google and wikipedia know the difference.
Any chance of a display like this making it's way into an iPhone?
@Ara
In 3 years every screen will be OLED, does that answer your question?
@NizmoStyle
I actually was thinking about this summer instead of 3 years from now. Also, this screen's resolution is 2.5 times that of the iPhone while still being physically smaller.
Sounds nice, still waiting for the N1 to come to Verizon though.
I don't really get all the complaints about AMOLED displays not being usable in direct sunlight though. Since when were anything but ultra bright LCDs with the toughest anti-glare coating usable in that sort of light? My iPhone, with it's glossy anti-reflective display, completely sucks to use in direct sunlight.
Samsung should fire their software division. It's like two radically different companies in terms of quality.
MWC 10' here we come. Screen looks really sleek sexy looking. Just cant wait to see it when it's finish. Anyone here knows if this Samsung "Super AMOLED" will be using Android 2.1?
That must be some radio active stuff they working there. With the mask and everything.
