zoomMediaPlus' zoomIt is the iPhone's long overdue SD card reader
Sorry if we're the sort of folks to look a gift SD card reader in the mouth, but while we're oh-so-happy that Apple finally opened up application-enabled hardware development in iPhone OS 3.0, we really wish an accessory like this had been available for the iPhone right from the start. The new zoomIt SD card reader from zoomMediaPlus adds a bit of external, swappable memory to the iPhone and iPod touch at long last, giving you the ability to store your iPhone's pictures on the card, or pull stuff off it onto your handset using the free zoomIt app. Interestingly, this is coming to light just a couple weeks after we saw Apple's own similar solution for getting cameras into the iPad mix -- the SD and USB-adapting iPad Camera Connection Kit, which will be a mere $30. There's no word if Apple's adapter will work with the iPhone (we doubt it) or if the zoomIt will work with the iPad (perhaps), but the $60 pricetag on the zoomIt is a bit of a turn off. Also, it won't be shipping until April (though you can pre-order now for a $10 discount), so Apple may very well make up our minds for us by the time March rolls around.

how about just a USB dongle that connects to your camera?
@Eugene Action
How about a better display on the freakin phone?
You pay $10,000 for a DSLR and lense kit buy the cant include a decent Display?
Pooeratzi are stupid unedumacated dogs.. cmon boy go chase paris hilton so you can eat tonight!
@Eugene Action Better yet would be to just put a Dell Mini 9 in your camera bag. The LED backlit display doesn't have the best viewing angles, but has EXCELLENT color reproduction, and you can even upload or edit a few on the spot if you like, or like at the last wedding we went to he even hooked it up to a projector and had pictures just 30 mins old already cycling on a slideshow with music.
Check this out: http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2803_dell_and_streetwalker_preview.jpg (its on the left side)
@Ducman69
because no one wants that ugly dell shat.
Hi quality photo viewer on the go...priceless
@yulebellow And editor.
I much smaller reader that takes microSd cards would be nice - that thing looks quite large, although I guess you wouldn't have it connected all the time. Is this thing going to be SDXC compatible?
@thunderbollock It'd help if the SD/microSD card reader were just built into the iPhone rather than having to buy an external reader.
@NYNY
$10 says thats how the next itouch/iphone's will be
@manofchao5
I'll take that action. Apple likes to price according to storage capacity - and the pricing isn't in line with SD card prices - its generally more expensive. I think they like that you have to pay them for more storage rather than paying the SD card manufacturer.
@manofchao5 .. I doubt it, since SD card readers only finally made it to the Macbook Pro 8 months ago. Apple hates that stuff.
Thats pretty cool technology
as far as i know. There are some sd cards that act as adapters for micro sd cards. I have some.
An SD card??? Plugged into a phone?!?!!?
This is MADNESS!
@ChazClout
No, no - It's a bag of hurt.
@ChazClout
What is this sorcery?!
@(Unverified)
It can get thoughts on and off of that tiny card? Absurd!
@ChazClout : I thought is was Sparta?
lol how is this exciting?
@JFK
It's exciting because no other phone needs such a setup, thus it is an innovation!
The majority of the rest of us will have to make do with whacking a second SD card into their phone if space gets tight. :(
Damn my Nexus One's Micro SD card Slot. I want a $60 adapter too! :(
@ChazClout
Haha. I see what u did there :)
I wish some one could create an iphone app emulator to run on gPhone or wm phone with compatible hardware
This reminds me of the Sony Ericsson T68i from 2002. Phones didn't have camera's those days so you could buy a detachable camera to plug in to the connector at the bottom of the phone.
Is this the revolutionary future Apple?
Actually, if there's something the iPhone will get from the iPad, I expect it to be the camera connection kit. It's $30 apple gets for something that costs, what $4? The software will already be in place as long as iPhone OS 3.2 runs on both devices, and it has to for "universal" apps. Either way, we're waiting till March, so I'll wait till march and save money. I'd really like one of these. I just hope they're much faster than the iPod readers.
Come on AirStash, or soon i'll need some sort of stackable dock or carrying pouch to add stuff to my iPhone most of my other smartphones already have.
Great. Another way to drain the battery while simultaneously preventing it from being recharged. Brilliant! O_o
maybe they'll add one of these dongles to provide flash for the iphone...
@elijahblake
camera flash that is....
Look at the stump on that iPhone!
Such feeble or should I say weak. You guy like this.
Isn't this supposed to be the apple free version of engadget? Whats the point of the exclude apple site if we still have to sift through apple posts?
@theefman
its easier just to skip the apple posts
You should add |iphone to the URL you're using. Or maybe |iphone|ipad to be safe.
@Dale P That was a reply to the post above, stupid comment system.
There's one for the iPad so I'm betting it'll work on the iPhone. There's even a usb version. And it's only $30, half what this thing costs.
I wonder if you could modify the old usb ipod camera adaptor to work...
I could have sworn that most DSLRs use compact flash ,and not SD cards. But I guess for those with point and shoot cameras this is a plus
@blogwhitesitescom
prosumer, or entry level dslr's like the d90, xsi, t1i and the like use SDHC cards. Many cameras even now use both- even souy is doubling up
Can't most true smart phones do this already? Just put a micro sd card into an adaptor, put the adaptor into the camera, takes your pics, then put the micro sd card into the phone. Pretty simple, cheap and you don't have the need for a reader the size of a saltine hanging off of your phone. Or beter yet send the pics to your phone that has true bluetooth connectivity.
A memory card connected to a phone. It must be magical, hey Steve Jobs... LOL
Give music and video on that SD card that I can play on my touch or iphone already!
That looks exactly like the 30 dollar add-on you can buy for the fucking apple tablet that allows you to use USB and SD-card.
Also, why is this on the apple-free website? Tag it properly engadget, or don't even bother tagging it at all.
Such an elegant solution to a sticky wicket of a problem. You'll hardly even know that this device is attached to your phone, as it only adds another inch and half to the length of the device.
looking at some of the comments, people really are using the apple-free engadget experience.
@bladerunner
good writtens, enough with the whining p*ssies already!!
Anyone know whether that "share" thing means sharing among iPhone users only or downloading SD content to the iPhone itself?
With each successive year, the (THAT)Phone comes closer and closer to being the KIRFy knock-off it so very much desires to be...
Does this mean the next Zune travel pack will have a card reader?
(realizes Zune transgression, hides behind rock)
Engadget, you again forgot the Apple tag. I don't want to see this shit.
Forget the outie, I'd prefer an innie
