Handheld US rolls out rugged Algiz 7 tablet

It's been quite a while since an Algiz tablet last popped up on our radar, but Handheld US is now back with another model: the Algiz 7. In addition to a fresh new white enclosure, this one packs a 7-inch touchscreen display, along with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, and Windows 7 Professional for an OS. To help you out in the field, you'll get a hot-swappable 2400 mAh dual battery pack, built-in GPS, and optional 3G -- not to mention ruggedization to MIL-STD-810G standards. No word on a price just yet, but this one will apparently start shipping next month.

Looking manly in white..
need a nice man-purse for this baby. looks substantially larger than your run-o-the-mill pocket
Sheesh. Look at the size of that bezel.
@Anatidae
I doubt the military or industrial folks that actually buy these things really care that much.
@Anatidae
I swear to god if I see one more fucking post on Engadget about a god damn bezel...
Heh. Of course :) It was a bad joke. I am great at really unfunny humor. Sort of like an anti-comedian.
@Anatidae Hey, what's that stuff you like to put around a scree? You know, so you can grip it?
i think microsoft should create a touch friendly version of windows 7.
something that would make tablets more palatable. from the start, tablets are a gimmick which consumers aren't calling out for, and the fact that either all the tablets so far incorporate windows 7 which, to be honest, even though it's suppose to be touch friendly, just isn't, or like the iphone OS, which basically can't do anything.
@dedparrot
They do, it's called windows 7, it can be adjusted to be finger friendly for tablets.
Looks like it should have an udder....
@Ryan Deen
I also think that every gadget should have tits! :D
Can I get this in military green?
That thing looks neat. I prefer this style of design to Apple's slick glossy jetsetter scheme. I'm still rockin my G1 and it still looks good, quirky and minimalistic.
Why it has Playstation controlls?
@manwithacamera
It kinda doesn't..
They should've called it Algiz 0 and made it sand-proof for use in reporting in the Middle East.
Source? I'd like more specs. For instance, the display seems to have much higher resolution than 7" usually has.
@Michael Pollard
You could do what a lot of us did and use the internet to find more specs. Unless, of course, proactive isn't really your thing. If that's the case...here is the source link you were passively looking for: http://www.handheld-us.com/regions/us/algiz-7.asp
I was hoping to find the source the author was going from, which is normally given in a Read, Via, or Source link of some sort. Your link to the manufacturer specs has what I was wanting most, namely display resolution, and that may be the source the author was using, but he didn't say.
Professionalism (and Engadget norms) dictates that sources be explicitly cited unless the info is "public knowledge", though I realize "major" news reporters often do not give their sources. In my English classes in college, I could have been instantly failed for not citing a source (for "plagiarism," even if I did mention the general source without giving the specific location), so it stands out to me. I was regularly marked off for simply having the citation not exactly in the form the professor wanted, a missing comma or such, which was worse when we were given a protocol formula and no examples...
Back on topic, the display is 1024x600, which isn't what the picture looks like, but it is better than many displays of that size.
Unlike the other tablets able to run flash, this one actually has the arrow keys you'll want to play all of those flash games built right in!
All jizz?
Looks interesting.
ruggedized to Mil Spec= expensive.
Looks like a Speak & Spell for the 21st century...can you get it in red with a yellow boarder around those keys?
Yeah the white will make it look extra ruggedized when it gets dirty...
Now that's definitely not "portable"
@bubs353 Sure it is, it's the kind of portable where it wont die if you bring it outside and it's not clear blue skies.
I used to have a "portable" computer that was about 20lbs and had to be plugged in. (Dual 5 1/4" 360k floppies... definitely not dust-resistant...)
@Sarig
Oh Yeah. Seems like the meaning of portable is changing is some people point of view.
Is there enough room to set down your drink while you play Space Invaders on it?
wait so they make it in white? Judging by the construction and the design, this thing was made to withstand multiple drops and be used out in the field. Maybe even used to trek through the Amazon or a desert. Yet for the life of me I can't understand WHY white? Why would something so rugged, obviously designed to be used where it may be dropped, be designed in white? It's gonna be a bitch to get rid of those stains and fingerprints all the time.
@Eternity
S N O W ... for when the Arctic wars start.
@Please forgive me
Exactly! For when we go to war to claim the oil in the arctic.
