You've got to be one of the cool kids that shelled out a Benjamin to get into the iPhone Developer Program to get access, but if you're already a card-carrying member, it looks like you've now got a green light to download beta 2 of the iPhone SDK for
OS 3.2. We don't know what's new, changed, or removed, but presumably, most of the updates would center around the sundry changes Apple has made to support the
iPad in the latest version of its mobile platform -- so drop us a line and let us know what you find, alright?
Does it add support for iPhone development?
@Apples2Oranges Actually, shouldn't Apple be demoing OS 4.0 in the next few months or so? They did with 3.0 in March or so last year...
Damn it. It's 11 o'clock here in Ireland. Through AOL it would take me 5 hours to download that sdk. What should I do? Sleep or geek?
@PATRICKmcnicholl
...you ask that question on a geek blog? :P
@PATRICKmcnicholl
AOL? I didn't think anybody used that anymore.
@PATRICKmcnicholl Start the download, and sleep for 5 hrs, then geek.
@PATRICKmcnicholl The second person I know on this site ^_^
@kjb434 AOL?!?!?! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Geek it is. :). Looks like I'll be here for a while
@PATRICKmcnicholl
No Virgin Media cable connection??
@PATRICKmcnicholl
5 Hours ?
Come out of the dark ages Man.
@kjb434
Compuserve FTW!
Sadly I can't get cable. I live in the middle of nowhere. I'm lucky if i get 2mbps. And I've been on AOL for 10 years. lol
@PATRICKmcnicholl If you're up north.. You've no excuse to be on aol, if you're down south.. I just feel sorry for you :/ I once worked on a helpdesk for a telecoms company (shan't name names) it wasn't long, but it was long enough to realise eircoms phone network is hideously put together :/
@PATRICKmcnicholl YOU'VE GOT MAIL! ** beep**
@PATRICKmcnicholl Just read the change log and go to sleep. I doubt you'll miss out on too much.
@TikiTeko. Funny you said that, they recently changed that voice from female to male, It's quite a creepy voice aswell. I am now afraid to open up my mail in AOL
@Faslane66
Compuserve?! You need to dump that ancient service and get with the times, man! Prodigy is where it's at.
@Jack
I'm pretty sure that Earthlink is where it's at.
@PATRICKmcnicholl
America OnLine... in Ireland?
@Cydoniac Uhh, I meant Irish person.
@PATRICKmcnicholl
So? Any new big updates?
@PATRICKmcnicholl
AOL is international? I'm so stupid... xD... I thought "America" On Line meant America only. Just saying...
@PATRICKmcnicholl
I laughed so hard at your comment! Lol
Does this mean no OS 4.0 in the near future?
@TJM
No, it is just a launch firmware. Once the new iPhones are announced in April or June or whenever Apple will have their event, they will then announce and show off the new 4.0 software, after all, history does repeat itself am i right?
@TJM
I agree, although the iPhone is pretty great, it needs more features to be competitive in today's market. Add a real home page that can show tasks, email subjects and Calender entrees. have the notification bar pull down to answer text messages without closing down your current app (if you dont want us to have Multitasking) give us an option to turn flash on/off (default off). Heck forthe love of God let me select which album to put a picture in when I save it to my phone...
I want a funny pictures folder so when I see a funny "pedobear" picture I can save it to a different folder than the one with pictures of my 8 month old son. When my wife sends me pictures of what I should be doing instead of working where do I save them to? *bahhhhhhh* just thinking about the potential my iphone has and the lack of initiative apple has put into it recently makes me want to explode!
@bigjkcfan
Last year was minimal hardware changes with large OS changes, this year will be opposite with minimal OS changes and a lage hardware change. Don't expect OS 4 till next year.
*bubble bursts*
@Mentat
couldn't agree with you more mate
@7egend
I disagree.
To get the tablet out on time Apple probably forked the most stable version of iPhone OS.
I imagine work is ongoing for 4.0, but it won't be ready until the Summer. There's no point shipping iPad with a not quite finished version of 4.0.
I don't think all Apple's going to all of a sudden put iPhone OS in maintenance for a year. There's too much competition.
@cherryboom
His complaints are valid. When I use HTC Hero's UI, I can't help but admire how neat it is. But when I open up the Apps screen... Ugly icons along with an arrangement which I think is alphabetical... Don't even get me started on the Android apps market...
Any sign of a way to create a 3G/wifi/BT toggle?
@walsho
I give it a slim to none chance, honestly.
Though maybe... just maybe, Apple will come through in the 25th hour, announcing the iPhone 3GV on Verizon, with OS 4.0, featuring wi-fi tethering, 64GB of storage, 4"+ OLED display, HD recording and output, unicorns, and... wait for it.... MULTITASKING!
Yeah, I would actually flip my shit if that happened. I'd be surprised if more than one of those things happened, honestly.
@walsho
Yup. SBSettings. :)
does it support real player now?
Although if you were with Eircom it'd take about 3 weeks, you'd get done because they can't tell what is and isn't an illegal download and then you're router would crap out!
I really do hope to see some signifigant hardware changes with a 1Ghz "custom" Apple processor.
AOL and Real Player? Really?
Is it 1995 again?
I think he meant "AOL" NOT literally. As like saying "My internet is very slow just like AOL" not the actual AOL, but I might be wrong.
@kyphem
He said he'd been with aol for ten years.
I onl had dialup my entire life until I went to college in 2004.
It was like WTF! My town was just getting cable when I left.
Discovered dc++ (basically the schools network became a torrent tracker) and never went back to dialup. Amen.
So...has there been any word on what 3.2 is actually going to add/fix compared to 3.1.3? Is the biggest focus just making apps scalable to the iMaxiPad?
@stokd
(Max)iPad would've been more slick.
Is it just me, or has iPhone/iPad SDK 3.2.2 been seeded to members of a couple 'exclusive' websites since last Friday?
...maybe I'm mistaken.
