Navigon keeps MobileNavigator iPhone app fresh with 3D terrain views, Facebook / Twitter integration
Hey, software engineers of all shapes and sizes -- are you keeping an eye on this? Navigon is releasing yet another significant update for its continually improving MobileNavigator iPhone GPS app, and at this point, we reckon these guys and gals should get some sort of medal for pursuing innovation on an existing product rather than leaping to "the next best thing." The latest refresh adds in three primary features: 3D terrain views, a 3D panorama view ($9.99 extra) and in-app connectivity with Facebook and Twitter. As you'd expect, the latter enables users to broadcast current position, destination and ETA to social media outlets, which should make existing Foursquare addicts overwhelmed with joy. Version 1.5.0 also throws in MyRoutes, which is said to analyze your driving habits, patterns, location and time / day in order to provide "up to three routes clearly displayed in-map with ETA, distance and driving times for each." Best of all? It's just $69.99 ($20 less than normal) until February 15th, while the real-time traffic add-on is reduced $5 to $19.99 for the same duration.

It bums me out mega that I invested in the Tomtom app and car kit.
Tomtom, pleeeeeease throw us a bone!
@BUNT2
I believe you can use the Tomtom car kit with any other navigation app ... I don't know for certain, though.
@James Sonne
I think that's right, but I've already paid for the Tomtom app
@BUNT2 TomTom are bound to follow suit, but if not, at least you have the option.
@FORDY How is the iPhone on T-mobile?
I've been watching the iPhone nav app battle with interest for some time, sitting on the sidelines wondering which way I should send my money. That 3D terrain view on the Navigon app is beautifully done. It may finally be time for me to plunk down some $$$ on a good nav app for my iPhone (which I'll do, of course, exactly *one day* before Apple announced their own free iPhone nav app).
@James Sonne Yes you can pair the Navigon App with TomTom GPS Car Kit. In fact that's what I have been using for the past 3 months, and it works great! It provides rock solid GPS signal.
@James Sonne
I have the Car kit. Yes it works w/ any NAV app. I've been using it with Waze. I'm thinking Navigon deserves my money. Tomtom and Garmin haven't put out any updates in recent memory.
@rduran TomTom updated last week to 1.3 with LIve HD Traffic and Google Search.
I have Co-Pilot, Navman and TomTom on the iPhone, but only TomTom gives me reliable routes thanks to IQ Routes. Navman and Co-Pilot has been deleted.
Navman looks very nice with the 3D hills (which is only displayed in a small fraction of the map) but if the routing is not up to scratch then I'll stick with TomToms basic view and better routing.
@Den It was 1.4 that was released not 1.3 as I said above. oops!
@Den Ignore my last post. It was 1.3. Now where is my coffee to wake my brain up. lol.
Last I checked, this app was a dog on the 3G. Can anyone vouch differently?
@UZERMike
I was running this app on TMO and it was fine. The only thing that was dog for me was opening up the app.
@SC40095 I'm using tmo too, I should revisit it I guess.
This actually looks rather enticing!
Who said Ovimaps for FREE?
@gollu
Ovi Maps takes the cake with its' capability.

I still use my TomTom One 1. generation
well...... my mind just got blown. About time a 3d rendered version of navigation came out.
As owners of a Garmin SatNav and having tried out a Navigon non iPhone SatNav and been in a friends car equipped with a top of the line Tom Tom, I can testify as a human factors person that the Tom Tom was the worst and slowest, the Garmin excellent in all respects (speed, accuracy and MOST usability) - and the Navigon even better - the only reason we didn't buy one was that the model we wanted was out of stock and we were in a hurry. This bodes well for the iPhone version.
Jailbreak people!!! I got the tomtom app for free. Gonna wait till they crack this and get this for free!!!
@Mtmrob
in the immortal words of coolio: "it takes a thief"
@OriginalJosh Hahaha yea.....jailbreakin turns the iPhone into a whole new beast. Plus I'm a cheap ass. I've spent over $100's of dollars on apps before jailbreakin.
@Mtmrob Hey, stealing is stealing, no matter what you did before you stole. Just remember that.
@Mtmrob
Can't crack in app purchases. Good luck though.
Yeah. these guys came out with some nice navigation units.. too bad they stopped releasing it in the US :(
Not sure if I still want to buy this or nothing at all. I do dock my iPhone on my bike's (Gixxer) cluster and use Google Maps when I need to map. But it's not as good as a real navigation. Maybe it's time for me to buy an app that does it.
I really like the idea of your Sat Nav posting updates to people who are interested in your position but I'm not convinced that Twitter and Facebook are the correct places for this data to go. Plain ol' SMS would be preferable, for me, so that I only tell those people who I want to know, e.g. my parents when they are expecting my wife and I. The Twitter posting just sounds like an advertisement to be stalked, or at least broadcast to the world that people should take the opportunity to burgle your house.
Nice concept but I'm not convinced the implementation has been fully thought through. It sounds to me that they went with Facebook and Twitter so that they can advertise the product to have "social networking" and both services are currently considered "cool" by the media.
I have to say I downloaded this app in December and I use it all the time with great accuracy. I have a brand new tomtom my wife purchased for me that I've used once. I definately think this app works great especially on iPhone 3gs. Another plus is it works without using data connection as all maps are stored locally.
All new features will be available this Spring..............is that right? Can anyone confirm that?
Free on the Android
@lightforce
Navigon is coming to Android but the Google nav doesn't hold a candle to this app.
@SC40095
I would agree. Google Nav is really a cool idea but its certainly not anything I would consider a finished product. I have both a droid and a Garmin and I use the Garmin over GNav any day of the week. Its just to inaccurate whereas a Garmin or something else can really drill down to the exact location.
With that being said the times I have had to use my google nav when I've been in a car without my Garmin it has saved me a whole bunch.
so now it looks exactly the same as my navigon I bought over a year ago for $400.
The middle east version costs $99.99 and does not have the features offered in the US or European versions. If data is not available for this region, then why is it that expensive?
The best Nav for sure, but on the 3G, IT is SOOOO slow.
So where do you purchase the $9.99 the 3D panorama view???
I went to more in the App and I don't see it there.
Am I missing something??????
@kemck I'm wondering the same thing too. I thought it be an App udate or in App Purchase under "Extra." But nada for both.
@katsun Not out till Spring...
What's the difference between "3D terrain view" and "3D panorama view"
Is it just me, or is this piece completely misleading ? They show the new version and brag about the new features then tell you to rush and purchase in the next few days to save.
The only problem is that, as far as I can see, 1.5 is not out yet. What you get for the reduced price is 1.4.
If not, what do you have to do to get 1.5 ?
Yeah... The LiveTraffic service is still US$19.99 in the "Extras" tab in Navigon and the MobileNavigator version in the Apple AppStore is still 1.4.0. Sooo...
Are they going to offer the US$5.00 LiveTraffic sometime between now and the 15th or is US$5.00 only for newer purchases?
So, is this ever going to show up as an update, or as available? The app store still shows 1.4.0.
The problem I have with the TomTom car kit, and any kit that doesn't have the full iPhone connector to piggy back on, is that I have a DICE unit which I use to connect my iPhone and iPods to my car so that I have on (car) screen (Prius) text display of what song is currently playing and steering wheel controls for my iPhone/iPods. There is no way to piggy back a TomTom car kit and the DICE unit. Otherwise I would buy one.
Hello ALL Blogsters,
I have the latest version of the Navigon MobileNavigator North America. (v 1.5.0) This application is on the latest iPhone software (v 3.1.3)
I recently paid for the in-app add-on, Panorama View 3D.
After downloading twice, (used Wi-Fi with app open) I cannot get this application to function.
The regular 3D works flawlessly!
I don't think it downloads properly, as during my second attempt, I let
the app download for 7 hours only to see that the DOWNLOADING button
was still unchanged. (There never was a progress bar showing percent complete?)
Trying the program after the download did show a broader skyline,
however, the streets were skewed and the image was flat not 3D.
Since I live in a mountainous area, I was very disappointed that the image
was not displaying correctly.
Any ideas for fixing this Panorama View 3D issue?
Thanks for your assistance.
