Intuitive's smartphone UI concept thinks so you don't have to
Other than some fancy wallpaper that automatically changes based on the time of day or the music that you're listening to, the UIs of modern smartphones are generally pretty static -- what you see at 8AM is going to be the same thing you see at high noon or bedtime. Israeli firm Intuitive User Interfaces is looking to change all that with its new "one-touch" UI concept that uses situational cues -- presumably time and place, primarily -- to call up functions that you're most likely to use in a 3D mishmash of icons. Apps like Locale have been toying with the concept of situation awareness for a while now and Toshiba is working on a similar concept for phones released in its Japanese domestic market, so it seems like this could be the next logical step -- just in time to stop our poor, overworked thumbs from cramping up. The platform's first coming to Android with versions for other operating systems already in the pipeline.

So it's a home replacement app for Android?
@TheGM
Wait, wasn't this supposed to be on the pre?
@Kamil R
No, the Pre doesn't do "home screen." Notifications occur consistently in the bottom notification area, and stack up, regardless of what is on the display when the notification arrives. That's an entirely different paradigm from home screens used to allow you to check notifications manually.
@Kamil R I was gonna say the same thing... it sounds like one of the examples of how the pre / webos would operate that was given early last year by that elevation partners guy (long hair guy... can't remember his name)... It never really panned out though...
No thanks, I like having my own control over my own device.
@Almo hell i don't even like calendar reminders on my BlackBerry. why would i want my phone to pretend it knows what i want?
sounds kind of cool.. but not sure how it will work effectively... I mean what if the interface senses I am at work... will it only pull up document editing software and email... what if I'd like to play a game on my break or something hahaha, I'd have to see how it works before I would even consider buying a phone that features it, the wall paper thing is cool though :-)
I could see this getting really annoying. I'd rather tell my phone what to do rather than it doing things I don't want it to
It would be even more awesome if it was actually....ya know....available.
Should probably have mentioned that.
@GenericMessage
Anyone else wonder why its running on an i-pod touch in the picture? lol
@GenericMessage
It isn't.
It doesn't need us anymore.
@HardToBelieve
ahahaheek
Definitely an interesting concept. I need more details of the functions and see it in action before I decide whether I like it or not.
Becomes self aware to schedule your doom!
It's a TRAP!
Clippy for your Phone.
Yes, it could be annoying.
I think better UI design is to make access to linked info easier to use.
If this mythical meeting has an address, make a click on that address open the map. But pre-emptively opening the map whether you want it or not is just irritating.
@Gregorian if they actually used Clippy I might have to try this
"3D mishmash of icons..."
Wow, you guys are really selling it.
It's a cool concept as long as the UI isn't completely dependent on situational awareness.. I'd like the ability to shut my phone up every once and a while. However, I think this is going to be the next big thing with smartphones in general. Location/situational awareness is going to be pretty awesome.
Sounds like it will need something that multi-tasks.
@Ordeith2
Time to scratch out anything Apple related then.
Wow... no one can tell that's that is a photoshoped iPhone at all.
that is so cool! wow what an awesome idea. i almost cried!
"Damn you phone! I already know how to get to Lexington!"
Not for me. It's not three laws safe.
Keep the hell away from Droids!
so it will intuitively show a big icon for porn?
This sounds like a good way of confusing users as much as possible. Some people (like my dad) can't get used to their menu layout after 5 years of using the same phone, imagine what would happen if the layout changed according to the time of day and location.
Heh, 3g / gps / screen refreshments all day long!
Oh boy, battery, battery, battery...
