The fine city of Barcelona is abuzz this week as final preparations for
Mobile World Congress fall into place -- and as you probably know by now, we're all expecting Microsoft to pull out all of the stops to introduce
Windows Mobile 7. Just like last year, Redmond is renting out the Catalonia Barcelona Plaza Hotel across the street from the convention center to help kick off its announcements in style, and reader Javier has been kind enough to send in some shots of the facility getting done up in Microsoft livery for the event. There aren't any spoilers here, sadly, but we can see that the company's "Windows Phone" branding figures prominently (we should hope as much) and they're using the catchphrase "Ready. Set." to get everyone fired up. You might say the "wow" starts now -- or, you know, you might not. Either way, be sure to keep it tuned right here throughout next week's festivities, because we'll be bringing you tons of coverage live!
If you're as curious as we are about Microsoft's plans, here's when the event (which you can bet your bottom euro we'll be liveblogging) kicks off on
Monday, February 15:
03:00AM - Hawaii
06:00AM - Pacific
07:00AM - Mountain
08:00AM - Central
09:00AM - Eastern
02:00PM - London
03:00PM - Paris
11:00PM - Tokyo
[Thanks, Javier M.]
Update: We've gotten email confirmation from Microsoft today that none other than the head honcho, Steve Ballmer, will be hosting the press conference -- which means we need roughly 20 percent less coffee before showing up than we would otherwise.
As a current WM user, I REALLY dont like the "windows phone" branding. Come on, they could have come up with a more marketable name than that...
I only hope the rumors aren't true. No multitasking? No 3rd party apps? Every leg it had over iphone os gone?
Please, let it not be true. Please don't let MS hobble their operating system in a misguided attempt to bring it down to apple's level, in hopes that it will somehow make them as "hip" "trendy".
Get Ready, get set.... the disappointment starts NOW!!
I just hope Ballamer would invest a bit more in presentation skill seminars...
No multitasking... no multitasking... no multitasking... no multitasking... no multitasking... no multitasking... no multitasking...!!
So here is my fantasy, Microsoft has chosen the phrase "Ready, Set," implying that WinMo 7 is truly ready to go. Adding to that fantasy I am going to imagine that the reason T-Mobile USA has taken so long to get the HD2, is that it will actually have WinMo 7 on it as launch. In the happy, fun place of my mind, this all makes perfect sense, afterall many manufacturers and carriers thought they would be shipping WinMo7 phones last fall.
However, I then wake up to the reality that Microsoft has never launched a product without people knowing when it will ship month in advance. At least I can dream anyway. I will say that multiple contacts I have at Microsoft have said that Microsoft is going to much greater lengths than normal at keeping WinMo7 info from leaking than they have with other products.
@RandomGuy
WM7 will come with gesture control via the front camera's most detection. So, I don't think the HD2 is your go-to phone for the full WM7 experience.
@TareG I'll believe camera based gesture controls when I see them. People rumored the same thing about the iPad. Now gesture controls based on some sort of hyper sensitive capacitive screen that did not require contact, but worked at close range, well I could possibly buy into that.
lets cut the BS, Just hurry up and let HTC skin WM7.
does anyone else think that the fact that the letters aren't totally on the part of the wall that has been painted what? kinda like on the zune UI with some letters getting cut off? maybe that's a hint.
@ercd793
the shadow? dude. put the pipe down.
@Wesscoast
well i don't think shadows would make it seem like the "s" in "windows" and "set" and the "r" in "ready" appear as if they weren't on the white background that all the other parts are. although, even if they aren't on the white, it could be nothing.

read set fail
At least Mobile World Congress/Microsoft think of Australia, 12:30am in Adelaide when it happens. Had to wake up at 4:30am for the iPad announcement.
