PS3 getting 3D firmware update this Summer
Get your active shutter glasses ready: your PS3 is going to go 3D this Summer. In conjunction with the release of its 3D BRAVIA LCD sets, Sony is planning to release updates to turn the PS3 both into a stereoscopic 3D gaming platform, in addition to a 3D Blu-ray compatible movie player. Sure, we knew Sony was planning to give us 3D sometime this year, but now that we've got a summer time frame we can plan our wardrobe decisions according -- jean cut-offs, here we come!

Told you.
@MoonWalkerCTE
wtf really? o.O
oh well, i'm getting them
@MoonWalkerCTE This kind of picture deludes the general pubic.
@FORDY Or even the public.
they told us like last year that we would be getting 3D this year... when are they going to tell us something USEFUL about how we will be able to use this 3D? I'm assuming that I'll need a new TV...
Glad I stuck with PlayStation this generation :D
@MoonWalkerCTE
I was hoping the pic would be that Shark from Back to the Future 2.
Its so good you can see the image coming out the front of the TV, even from behind!!
So how does the fact that the PS3 is not an HDMI 1.4 device affect its 3D capabilities?
@busbeepbeep
Maybe some proprietary Sony thing. Good question though.
@busbeepbeep Now but you might need special 3D tv ...
@busbeepbeep
The side effects of running 3D over HDMI 1.3 may cause you to:
1) Hallucinate
2) Pick lice out of people's hair
3) Watch in horror as miniature dolphins break through your tv screen
4) Wear clothes from the 80's
I'd stay away from trying this if I were you.
@busbeepbeep
Technically, it will be HDMI 1.4, sans ethernet and 4k resolution support. Luckily, 1.4 isn't an all-or-nothing spec, which means that some 1.3 devices can be upgraded to support some 1.4 features.
HDMI 1.4 can be carried over the same cable that supports HDMI 1.3- sans HDMI ethernet, which means that theoretically 1.4 can be done from the same pins as 1.3.
PS3 simply has to be upgraded to support 3D frame-packing at 1080p24 and 720p60 to drive 3D video on an HDMI 1.4-compliant display.
It look like they're having a seizure of some sort.
@cdf74dc9
You say seizure i say orgasm ^_^
@SONYEDDIE
Bayonetta in 3D will definitely produce some of those "seizures."
@jaleman
just had one

And this is why the PS3 is the best blu ray player out there.
@B3astofthe3ast
Agreed. As a gamer, I'm not much into the PS3, since XBOX has a much richer social platform with LIVE; but as an overall entertainment device the PS3 is hard to beat (especially the older ones like mine that handle Hulu nicely through my Linux install). A firmware update to 3D means I'm halfway there. And I'll probably buy a 3D capable TV within the next year or two, once there's enough content being produced to justify the purchase. Sony: this is a good move.
@B3astofthe3ast
Who needs dedicated Blu Ray player when PS3 can do everything with firmware update and play awesome games
:)
@B3astofthe3ast
Nah, I think my HTPC is better.
@B3astofthe3ast
Macbook Pros are the best bluray players out there. Oh, wait.
@Yoda, help you he will find flamebait. :D
@B3astofthe3ast
Blue Ray is shite, I just rip the damn things and stream them to get it over with. I imagine Blue Ray will be the last of its kind, optical media that is.
PS3 gets another leg up in the entertainment department... now if they work on their online stuff, I'm sold.
WOOHOO!!
Cool! Now if only I had a ps3...
All I wanna know is if my 240HZ Sony TV will support it.. it's not like everybody will change their 50" TV just to get the 3D.. I know I won't.
@JP3G you mean your tv that takes only a 60Hz input and produces a 240Hz? Think you're out of luck for 3D.
@JP3G
What I've heard is that 240 CAN do it ... but your TV needs at least a firmware update for it. And of course, the manufacturer will have to actually provide that update to you. And you'll need the glasses. We'll all have to muddle through some testing to get it figured out.
@JP3G Funny thing is that my 2+ year old 50" Samsung DLP supports 3d given an appropriate source. Its got a port on the side where the video hookups are for a glasses interface. Not sure if they every sold said glasses in the States, but the option was there.
@KAL326 That port is for the glasses... You still use HDMI. Samsung definitely made some glasses in the states. However, since the stopped making the DLPs, they stopped making the glasses.
I think the nvidia shutter glasses will work. I'll definitely be looking into it..
Anyway, you turn some sort of 3D mode on via the TV's menus and it kicks on the glasses...
Damn shame Samsung stopped making that TV. A DLP with an LED lamps is flipping amazing!
"Get your active shutter glasses ready" NO I WOULD RATHER WAN'T TO KEEP MY EYES OPEN WHILE I WATCH 3D TV
Your move, Microsoft.
@Dante of the Inferno Microsoft is wayyy ehind I mean they haven't even discovered blu-ray yet not even in win. 7!
@pankomputerek *ehind = behind
@pankomputerek
you can play blu ray on win7? i dont think you can on os x or linux! not 100% sure though.
blu ray isnt all that to everyone, i've been streaming 1080p just fine for the last couple of month just fine.
Cant wait to try 3d out on the ps3 though!
@nabberuk
"not 100% sure though."
Then don't post.
@nabberuk
That's fine. Just fine.
This is cool and all, but when is PS3 going have Buzz capabilities?
@iBert
wait what???
xbox fanboys weep around the world.
@snowrid3r yes, owners of xbox, which doesn't play blu-rays, are shocked that it won't play 3d blu-rays either. Who would've expected that!
@Neuro Yeah, but what about 3D HD-DV.....nevermind.
3D. It makes CGI dolphins fly out of your TV and molest your family.
@Astounding
The couple reaching out to touch erect 3D dolphins is obviously a metaphor something very innocent and not sexual at all.
...
The big question for me is whether an upgraded PS3 is enough, or do you need a 3D TV, or specifically a 3D Bravia.
@Astounding
That's what I was going to say!
I'm not sure if this would be awesome or incredibly distracting for games...
@Solarviper24 It would be even better with the new xbox hands free controls... Watch out for those bullets!
@Solarviper24 In general; awesome. I've played a few and it depends if they get the depth of field right. At the moment the nVidia solution is pretty buggy in most games so only a handful work perfectly, but in the ones it does it adds another layer of immersion that just feels like it should have been there all along. Can't wait till I'm playing WipEout in 3D
Gimmick.
