PS3 getting 3D firmware update this Summer
Get your active shutter glasses ready: your PS3 is going to go 3D this Summer. In conjunction with the release of its 3D BRAVIA LCD sets, Sony is planning to release updates to turn the PS3 both into a stereoscopic 3D gaming platform, in addition to a 3D Blu-ray compatible movie player. Sure, we knew Sony was planning to give us 3D sometime this year, but now that we've got a summer time frame we can plan our wardrobe decisions according -- jean cut-offs, here we come!

@7egend:
Exactly.
Nothing of value will be gained; nothing of value will be lost.
@7egend
totally agree. 3D is for people who think Transformers is 'awesome' and Sylvester Stallone should make another Rocky film.
Finally Something that xbox won't have for a loooong time!
time to get a new tv
@brrip Agreed. I'm buying a new one the day the patch comes out
This 3D movement is about as annoying as "being green". If I wanted to see things in glorious 3D, I'd just shut the TV off and go outside!
@tuna Because you can see dolphins flying in front of you in your yard. I suppose when you want to shoot at space monsters and such you turn off your gaming machine of choice and hop in your rocket with a gun and find extraterrestrial life and promptly shoot it in the face? Or when you want to interact with people you won't use a computer to comment on a story you'll actually go out an talk to... oh wait you didn't do that.
@Moorbo
You've missed the point completely. I think this 3D thing is a fad. A gimmick to sell more TVs. Look at the current crop of programming. Will they really be better simply because they're 3D? Main complaint I've heard of regarding Avatar is that it was just a excuse to showcase the technology (i.e. lacking a polished story). And speaking of programming, how much 3D content will there be to make an expensive TV worth while? Remember when the PS3 came out and for a good year there wasn't really much one could do with it?
Besides, as someone who wears glasses, I don't see how I'm going to enjoy TV wearing two pairs at the same time.
@tuna
I wear glasses too, and I can't wear 3d glasses at the same time or I go insane.
but this isn't a fad and your argument doesn't make any sense. the PS3 had a slow start, but that's the opposite of a fad. It's not a very successful piece of technology with a lot of great content.
Avatar was a VERY popular film. Had no story, but folks will pay for this, and much more content will arrive for this. As you note, it will be a while before there are a lot of movies, but the PS3 will have several 3D games.
I think this is the very opposite of a fad. It's something you should wait on, because it will probably be a while before it's really worth jumping into unless you have a PS3 and want to replace your TV anyway.
GT5 in 3d is going to change things, in my opinion.
Wait until summer for cut-off jeans?! Psh...I'll be sporting mine in preparation!
hmm... I wonder if this will be exclusive to Sony 3d tv's.
what's the difference between hdmi 1.3 and 1.4 again?
@yakapo .1
Hot damn! I've always wanted to wear sunglasses while playing games inside my house!
imagine watching Avatar in 3D on the PS3 once the Blu-ray comes out.....it'll be just like the movies.

If you're expecting an IMAX 3D experience at home, you're going to be disappointed, especially on the LCD TVs.
I can't wait, this is gonna be the best thing since 2D. Whoa.
They're going to have to cut frame rate or resolution in half to accommodate the extra bandwidth required for stereo view. The HDMI chip can't magically be swapped out for one that has higher bandwidth. But nobody seems to be mentioning that.
@deej
what I have read you must have a new 3D Sony tv ($3-5k) for this to work & the 3D Sony tv will 'upscale' to 1080p from the PS3 downscaled output. Reduction in frame rate then split between both eye's would add too much flicker.
The question is what about other brand 3d tv's?
Whatever it is going to be a mess & there going to be lots of dissapointed people thinking this is going to work on there none 3D tv.
3D with glasses is going to be a flop. No update will change your HDMI from 1.3 to 1.4 & the price for a new 3D tv for a few 3D movies is just dumb. Best to wait a few years for glasses FREE 3D tv comes out, all the bugs will be worked out but in the end how long has 3D been around & still not taken off 50+ years!! Yes things have changed from Red & Blue glasses to Shutter. If Avatar was a flop we would not be talking about this... One hit movie does not make 3D....
Give me OLED instead!!!!
@Seemore
If it's just about movies, then of course you should wait.
But a lot of people, like millions of people, want this for 3D games like Gran Turismo 5.
And that game in 720p 60 hrz (doubled) for 3d would be fucking amazing, and I bet what I actually wind up with is quite a bit better than that.
It's on Sony to keep this from being a boondoggle, and they don't have the best track record, but the potential for this being awesome is certainly there on day 1.
Avatar sucked.
Great! Now all I need is a firmware update to make my TV support 3D. :(
3D is a magical experience for your whole family to enjoy... while dropping acid.

please don't break my PS3
@iPaul
I always hear tons and tons of reports of PS3s breaking due to firmware, but they never really pan out. I don't think it's FUD, I would freak out and scream if my PS3 broke from firmware.
It's probably a really tiny percentage, but I just wait a day to update.
The update PS3 thing would annoy me if the PS3 hadn't been steadily and seriously improved. This 3D thing is a major enhancement of capability... that I'm getting gratis.
@iPaul it's sad but this has happened to me.lost a ps3 to a firmware update, it cost me $150 and 6 weeks of no ps3.
"Product Images are concept only"
Thank God.
Hold on. did anyone notice how the woman on there wasn't looking at the screen at all. She was looking at that distracted young girls neck. SHE'S A VAMPIRE!
Gimmick.
wow... am i the only one excited to play games in 3d with the play station eye... and maybe the arc when it finally comes out??? seems like the only thing that has a small chance of giving the wii a run for its money... well at least a brisk jog
The shark still looks fake.
What about the whole "...don't need HDMI 1.4" thing? Then again I can't remember who claimed that... how would the PS3 be able to handle 3D if it's only 1.3a/b?
And... if my PS3 is cabable of producing a 3D signal, what about those BD players that had two separate HDMI ports -- one 1.4 for the 3D content and one 1.3 for audio if you use a ln A/V reciever...? I'm guessing we won't see 1.4 capable A/V boxes for a while. It seems as though I would have to use TOSLINK (bleh) or have to run audio through my display.
I wasn't convinced they could reproduce what I saw in the theaters in my home after all that CES buzz--I haven't even seen IMAX 3D--and I'm only losing hope.
And the PS3 delivers again.
Microsoft, your move? Obviously Natal.
Good shit.
Nintendo... oohh, still short on 1080p output.
That image is priceless.
um... ok....?
I'm wondering wht 3D telly will be like, for instance football matches who really wants to see rooney's head coming out the screen, can't wait till the end of the year when SKY rolls out 3D, I get that shit for freeee.
I can has "skip this update"? (Really, I have zero interest in 3D in a 2D medium, and would much prefer not taking the chance of my PS3 bombing on me...)
So the PS3 will DEFINITELY be 1080P / 48Hz? Right?
ie: 1080P / 24Hz for each eye.
@Darren Pillans
No HDMI 1.3 can not do that, it will be downscaled then the 3D TV will upscale it.
& that goes for DirectTv's 3D too that will just be 540i or 360p (pre eye) depending if it is a 1080i or 720p channel.
With HDMI 1.3 you split the resolution but no matter what, YOU MUST HAVE a 3D tv too get 3D.
i was trying to point out that the ps3 has yet another thing that 360 users doesnt.
@Neuro
i was trying to point out that the ps3 has yet another thing that 360 users doesnt.
i'm actually surprise at the amount of people who are interested in 3d gaming. I'll admit, I haven't played a 3d game before, but from what i've seen, it doesn't look like a killer app. And curse the day wear I need to have a second set of 3d glasses to whoop up on my friends in madden.
It is Summer. I have the cash. But I see no PS3s running in 3D
I think I will buy an Air Con instead. And wait until Winter to see what is available. .
I'm going to punch James Cameron in the kidneys when this bricks my PS3. Thanks Avatar, i loved you in 3D, but that doesnt mean everything on earth has to be 3D now..I want 3D on my game console as much as I want video on my DSLR
That chick in the photo is updating MY firmware. huh uh uh uhhu hummph.
What good is 3D for the blind...or is that 3D sound they are trying to advertise in that photo?
Um I don't have 3D-TV SONY JUST HDTV. I will not be updating just for that. SO do I still have to do update just because the system say sy or what?
Man this will be so awesome with my Xbox360... Oh wait.... DANGIT!!!
