Sony's $200 BDP-S470 is company's first 3D-ready Blu-ray player
And the flood gates are now officially open. Just hours after Panasonic introduced its newest 3D Blu-ray recorders and players, along comes Sony to brag about its first 3D-ready standalone deck. The BDP-S470, which is slated to ship later this month for $200, arrives with the ability to handle BD, DVD, CD and even SACD, with a 3D Blu-ray upgrade (via firmware update) planned for this summer. You'll also find BD-Live support, BRAVIA Internet Video, a USB socket for playing back media stored elsewhere, 1080p DVD upscaling and TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. If you were planning to snag a BDP-S570 BD player or one of the BDV-E770W / BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems, you'll be elated to know that those systems will also get a gratis 3D update in just a few months, with exact pricing and release details tucked down there in the source. Time to pick up a pair of 3D Gunnar Optiks, don'tcha think?

ps3 should be 3D-ready through some firmware update
@htd We know.
@htd
therefore the title is incorrect...
@Eugene Action No it's irrelevant.
Should be, or WILL be? Source?
If it will support Netflix I am buying it...aggressively.
I hate "3D Ready" it should ship with the required software already there....at least it has the Bravia Link stuff...I hope the PS3 gets that before too late as well.....
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi "3D Ready", and in the fine print.... "after firmware upgrade".
@ryanisnan yea reminds me of the "HDTV READY" TVs.....that was retired....
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
I like 3D Stuff.. but i'm not going to say it out loud because your avatar looks angry...
Why not just spend the extra hundred bucks and get a PS3 instead? It's constantly getting firmware updates and plus, it play games.
Doesn't this still require a 3d tv?
5.1 Analog outs?
Netflix?
Mitchell
@Mitchell What you doing with analogue outs? Do you prefer them to Optical? Or is it just due to lack of any other option?
I'm not having a go, just interested ;)
@FORDY
Because I have a old reciever with no HDMI in. Therefore I cant get TrueHD or DTS-HD MA sound. If the player gives me analog outs the player decodes the audio and I wont have to buy a new reciever.
SPDIF doesnt have enought bandwidth to handle these codecs.

Also, what about DVD-Audio?
Great, more information about a new '3D' product with no specific mention of HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 1.3 & 1.4, etc.
From CES, we know about HDMI 1.4 cables and 3D HDTVs (even Vizio stated HDMI 1.3 specifically) but are left wanting for news about HDMI 1.4 Blu-ray 3D Players/Recorders (that actually say they have HDMI 1.4 [I know most should]) and AV Receivers (yes I know about Onkyo's announcement already).
@WesleyHester
I agree, it would be nice, if not necessary to know if it supports HDMI 1.4.
Funny enough, the Sony press release doesn't even mention the word HDMI!
@WesleyHester
HDMI 1.4 cables are the same as HDMI 1.3 cables but with added ethernet. So a 1.3 cable will carry every other 1.4 feature (including 3D) just fine.
@corneliusm I'm referring to outputs and not cables. For example it was mentioned the Sony 770 might have two HDMI outputs. One HDMI 1.3 to send audio to current HDMI 1.3 A/V Receivers and another HDMI 1.4 for output to new (yet to be released) HDMI 1.4 HDTVs. What type of HDMI OUTPUT will the 470 have? That's the question. Use whichever cable you want.
200$ is A great starting price point Do we still need to buy A 3D-TV to watch 3D HD?
@Inspector Gadget80 yes
Awesome! I'm not really intersted in the 3D, but if it becomes an issue down the road, I'll be all set. The price is great and being able to play other media via the USB is a plus. It would be cool if the "other media" could be played from the disc player as well (i.e DVDs with AVIs). Maybe it will but Sony never gives out any specifics in their releases.
I've been holding out for the right player for the right price and this is the one for me!
You can pre-order this from the Sony site. They expect to have them available on 3/18.
SACD rides again? I thought Sony had finally given up on SACD. I'm not complaining though!
Hopefully this means I'll be able to get a non-3D Sony Blu-ray player for about $100!
So if I can use the USB port to attach an HD and use it as a media player, what file formats will it read? I looked around and could only find a reference to Divx and mkv.
(As if anyone is reading an article this old now....)
On the SonyStyle site, if you look at the specs, they say that it is using HDMI 1.3.
And I didn't see anywhere where it lists what formats it would support for the USB.
I'm a little confused why they would say that it would be out this month when their own site says it won't be until next month.
I just saw the owner manual on this. On Page 33 it lists all the file formats it will read via the USB connection. It looks like it runs the gambit from MPEG to AVI. :D
