That's right, we just arrived in Barcelona fattened up on airline food and as rested as 8 hours of recirculated oxygen consumed at a 30-degree incline can provide. Weary? No way, we're staring Mobile World Congress 2010 in the face, and if you're a smartphone nerd (and really, what modern gadget fan isn't?) then this is the event that will reveal our future handheld device purchases. So what's going to happen?
Windows Mobile 7 seems like a lock as is a Samsung
Bada debut with the Wave handset. But what are HTC, Sony Ericsson, Nokia and the rest of the industry up to? We'll find out soon enough -- press events begin tomorrow.
I'm waiting on news from Windows Phone, HTC on AT&T, and Samsung's Bada
@Drybones5 Welcome Windows Mobile 7, hope to be huge success!! :D
@rhezaganteng
Lets hope Seven lives up to Windows 7.
Lest's hope bada is badass.
@Drybones5 Android for AT&T!
@rhezaganteng Yeah, seems like we've waited long enough..
Windows 7 for HTC HD2! Make us happpppyyyyy!!!! :D
@Drybones5 Waiting for official word on AT&T and a webos device!
@XChrisX Here's hoping Bada and WinMo7 make me not know which non-iPhone to buy. Apple's sales slipped in 4Q 09 and I want them to slip again, not because I'm a hater but because I really want them to give consumers the choices we've been asking for, for years. I'll gladly go back to them if/once they get their heads out of the clouds.
@RockNStuff
Weeeeak.
@juanvaldez I'm fairly certain my next phone won't be another iPhone, but I'm also fairly certain it won't be running BADA either.
--shaking dice--
C'mo-o-o-o-o-o-o-on, WebOS on AT&T . . . .
@Drybones5 LOL WinMo, yeah okay, they'll make something good.
@Smart People Play Tuba
I will be shocked if the 2 WebOS devices are not Pre and Pixi
@Drybones5
Yeah, me too, but I was hoping that they'd be something new, especially since the Pre is "only for moms" now.
Also, I figured that if they WERE just revamped Pres and Pixis, they'd have just said that at CES.
@Smart People Play Tuba
I hope they get new devices out on AT&T to be more unique. But putting the same kind of phone would broaden the Pre and Pixi phones and be seen as a major phone.
Gorgeous view...
Engadget editors: don't miss the opportunity to visit the Barcelona Pavilion right there!
@frauhottelmann, it's even more gorgeous at autumn festivities, with all those lights and smoke effects on the fountain, and with some mighty wicked fireworks...
@incognito You know, I was there already :)
I don't think the Engadget editors care, but go see some buildings by Gaudi...
@frauhottelmann Catalan nationalism and pride, ftw. I hope they release more phones with Catalan as an option AND maybe Android will release and Catalan language pack!
come on sprint show us u can get something beyond the lotus elite...
Who's got reception?
@Teslanaut Everyone, the Europeans and their ubiquitous coverage put us to shame!
Well Microsoft you have the floor now to impress us. Please don't disappoint!
LET'S GO WINDOWS PHONE!!!! :D
Can't wait to see what is announced.
Have fun Engadget crew!
I would like to visit Barcelona some day, looks beautiful.
Cant wait to see windows mobile 7, better be good
Will Palm be presenting at MWC?
@krische
This. I'm -really- hoping for some new hardware.
I'm very impressed with Android, and also the speed at which Android is updating. More than one major release/year is incredible and Google is on track to keep pace--and their mobile applications are constantly improving, too. Take Google Maps, for example, recently integrating favorites from the desktop, as well as implementing Night Driving mode in Navigation. Fantastic stuff.
With that said, I'm excited to see what Windows Mobile 7 holds, and eager to learn more. Here's hoping WinMo7 rocks!
@Shidell Here's to seeing Flash 10 on android during the mwc
@mitnits I hope not. I hope Google pursues more open alternatives to Adobe's Proprietary Flash. Maybe use Gnash to ween people off Flash and then push more into HTML5, CSS 3.0, WebGL and so on and so forth.
Webkit engine ftw!
@Teslanaut
Using Gnash won't drive people away from Flash; it will simply drive them away from Android. They know Flash, they've used it, and rather a bunch of them either accept the occasional crash or just don't get it (I rarely get a flash-crash myself), and they know it can work. So when Google releases something half-baked they'll just blame Google rather than Flash (and rightfully so).
Oh, and ofcourse we´ve seen announcements about Flash 10.1 on Android/WebOS so it´s quite likely that there will be a demo of some sort ±'
I'm excited to see what is announced and what we can expect to get this year in the US. I look forward to this event every year more so than CES.
Go Nokia!
go go go Nokia N8-00 :)
Here's hoping for a WebOS device with a screen ≥ 3.5"
Can't wait. It's time for the most important mobile phone event again!!!
I really wanted to go this year but the cheapest trip was $3,000 I wish I had Engadgets budget for my little site :)
I am pumped for MWC 2010!
Since you guys are there already, you should sneak into those booths and try to break some news!!
i am very excited about windows mobile 7 and hope nokia debuts a new maemo 6 handset without a keyboard ( i can live without a physical keyboard ) which has a capacitive touch screen at least 3.7 inch touch screen with 1Ghz processor and all the other usual bits such as wifi n-draft, fm transmitter/reciever, bluteeth 2.1 with EDR ( I dont know what that does but i want it) GPS.
i just hope they release the device and i can buy it tomorrow :P
please NOKIA i am the biggest fan of all nokia phones. Just make this phone, I LOVE YOU LONG TIME ;)
More details on Android phones on AT&T please.
Funny, that even in Spain, Spanish comes second. Look at the banner between the two towers: "Entrada Principal" comes after "Main Entrance."
Engadget is one of the largest tech blogs out there...
...and they couldn't at least bump their writers to business class!?
My wish list:
1. Devices actually ready to ship fairly quick from their announcement date, not 6 months/a year later (yeah, you SE)
2. Devices with current fast processor, like snapdragon, not 2-year-old slow processor with premium price (yeah Nokia, I'm looking at you)
3. Android 2.x devices. Really, the OS is already out (N1/Milestone), but then what else? Is that it? Last year, it seems that there is going to be a flurry of Android phones in early 2010, but then the N1 came out, and we have silence.
4. Tri-band HSDPA devices with 850 band
5. Companies selling their HSDPA phones unlocked, that is already available outside the US, in the US, or at least making them available. (Yeah Palm, you! And you too HTC!)
6. Reasonable pricing. We already know the approximate cost of the parts, 3G radios, touch screens, etc, and the fact that Android is free. Selling unsubsidized phones with >400% markup is not cool anymore. (ie. Let's assume a device cost ~$150 in parts. I can understand selling it for $300-$400. But $800 (with older components to boot)? Really?)
Steve Ballmer better show off Windows Mobile 7. No stupid time-line.
If you are in Barcelona, then you must go to Sagrada Familia, some awesome Gaudi architecture. Also make sure you go to Cerveceria Catalana, very affordable and very good. Enjoy the trip.
Hope you all have a great time there! Looking forward to your news!
