PlayStation 3 controller used for N900 gaming (video)
Is the N900 the most hacker-friendly phone ever created? All sources are pointing to "yes." Just two short months ago, we saw one determined code monkey turn his N900 into a PS3 controller; today, we're looking at someone who did the exact opposite. If you've memorized the Debian source code and aren't afraid to dabble in the wild and murky world of N900 modding, you too can one day use a spare SIXAXIS controller in order to dictate gameplay on your Nokia handset. All the instructions you need are there in the source link, and for everyone else just looking to have a watch from the sidelines, hop on past the break and mash play.

This is the future of gaming.

"And what games do people exactly play on their N900??"
Well I play
Duke Nukem 3D, Quake III, Angry Birds, Jagged Alliance 2.
and others play,
SNES games, Lucas Arts, SCUMM, DOS games via DosBox,
Oh, and thousands of flash games
The most capable phone.
It's probably easier to list what it cannot do.
Sorry engadget, it is OLD! :(
@rhezaganteng I normally wouldn't post the same but for some reason I thought I had already seen this here, either way still pretty cool.
@rhezaganteng Double post FAIL!

What? Clicking a green install button on a webpage is difficult? You can install this from the app manager. Clicking a web link will ask if you wish to add the correct repository. No reason why this won't be added to the ones which come with the phone later.
The slightly difficult part is making the PS3 pad sync to the N900 instead of its normal PS3. This is done in two lines in terminal or with a windows application.
To use it on PS3 again plug it into PS3 with cable once and it will switch back.
SO MURKY

They turned the controller into a N900??? Now, THAT'S impressive...
ROFL, I thought the same thing.
@conspiracyx
I wish my mom would quit calling my controller.
Now they need to make this for the iphone I hate playing mario with the cramped on screen controller its almost impossible to play but if I had all I would to do is whip out my controller and bam
@TheReturn
That will never happen with the iPhone's crippled bt stack. Apple really needs to open up these things for us hackers....
@SolidSnake
You can connect a wii controller to a JB iphone for emulated games.
The BT stack is being unravelled slowly.
Well all I can say is... Hold on a minute the joypads ringing..
Who would think that the underdog here in the states would pwn so much?
Now if we'd finally get some commercial games for the device ...
There was the disaster with the Angry Birds level pack and Nokia probably has given up after that, not making the platform for more game companies.
A real shame since I would give an arm and a leg for more levels of Bounce Evolution.
Easy to use bluetooth stack & TV-out make such a nice combination. While many phones have emulators, this way you can really enjoy the games like they were meant to.
While I won't be dragging along a Wiimote or Sixaxis everywhere I go, taking a controller and a cable isn't that much extra baggage on a trip etc.
HELP PLEASE I JUST GOT MY N900 2 DAYS AGO AM USING TMOBILE ON IT I BELIVE I GOT THE CORECT DATA PLAN BUT SOME TIMES IT GOES FROM 3G TO 3.5 WHY IS THAT ALSO WHEN AM ON YOUTUBE THE VIDEOS LOOK REAL BAD ANY HELP WILL BE GRATELY APRECIATED THANKS
The controller is larger than the screen...
@Exbloder Until you plug the N900 into you big screen TV with it's TV out.
Umm, Darren, I think you need to read the site yourself and make sure you aren't re-posting old news. Thomas already posted about this video a week ago!

Let's put it simple here. N900 is nothing but a device that can run linux operating system. A huge, huge amount of other devices are also capable of running linux. Now, linux can do a whole lot of different things. However, is it newsworthy to publish a new story about each and every thing linux is capable of doing?
@jussipussi lots of devices are capable or running linux but they dont do they? people here complained because there were tons of articles on speculations about the ipad and this is actually something interesting the n900 can do and apple devices cant and u find it a useless post?
@lifenexus How is this N900 related? Same can be done on each and every device that is running linux operating system, right? How is this Nokia or Nokia N900 related news? This is just advertising and I hate advertising like this. Publishing news articles just to advertise.
@jussipussi How many mobile devices in this form factor run linux?
I assure you this would have been posted if it was on an apple device without the 'its difficult' undertone.
@allen I'm quite sure many if manufacturers would see any sense in it. Bringing Linux to mobile device will not benefit anyone in itself - look at the father of Linux - Linus Torvalds did not want Nokia N900, Linus bought Nexus One. Nokia N900 is just a basic device that is running Linux on ARM hardware. Basically any ARM-handheld is capable of running linux like the N900 does. What is Maemo? Maemo is 98% Debian Linux created by open source developers, and 2% made by Nokia engineers (some badly implemented phone hardware functionality). Nokia just named Debian linux Maemo and put it in N900. That's what it basically is. It is senseless to publish everything a linux can do as N900 news. Doesn't make any sense. What would make more sense was to publish a news article when N900 can do a basic things like calendar sync which it is not capable of doing at the moment. Many basic things are missing, but I suppose some are glad that it can be used for some senseless gaming.
@jussipussi My n900 doesn't sync with my calendar? I don't think mine got that memo? Well I'll just go ahead and let it keep on thinking it can.
@jussipussi Oh my n900 doesn't sync with my calendar? Apparently mine didn't get that memo, so shhh, don't tell it, I'd get mad if it found that out and stopped syncing
@jussipussi
Youre right that linux phones should be able to do this, but do they? Android which rides on the publicity of linux can't do this.
And no complaining about the phone part. Nokia doesnt sell it as a phone, but a internet device that works also as a phone. N900 is a hackers dream. If you compare it to any other commercial phone there isn't any as open hardware and software as N900.
N900 is fastly becoming a classic hackers device.
I'm so glad that this amazing device is Mine. Go you N900!
now for nexus one please? plus this is impressive, for whatever reason, it's practically impossible to get this dumb ass controller to work on any 64 bit OS....
PS3 controller + Quake 3 + TV Out = Video Game Home console!!!!!!!!
Is this what the n900 has become?!?!
Is there seriously anything the N900 can't do?
where would the world be if it wasnt for hacking
N900 is getting noticeably better every week, the change is really fantastic.
N900 has over 30,000 programs, completely open, hacker friendly and .... wait for it.... native flash, right f*cking now.
is anything like this possible on other OS'?
I love this, it would've been a great submission idea for PUSH N900 MOD IN THE USA competition from Nokia, but alas the competition closes in just over 6 hours [12 Noon ET, 02/15/10]
If this kind of hacking interests you, be sure to check out the http://blogs.nokia.com/pushn900/usa blog for more on the submissions when they're announced hopefully by the end of this week.
