Adobe confirms no Flash in Windows Mobile 7 (updated)
Look, it's pretty clear that Windows Mobile 7 will be revealed by Microsoft at Mobile World Congress. We've been feeding on a veritable feast of WinMo7 rumors for several months now all pointing to Steve Ballmer's keynote scheduled for 3PM Barcelona time (9AM in New York). Now Adobe has issued a statement apparently confirming what we've already heard: Windows Mobile 7 will not support Flash. Unfortunately, the actual quote carried by Phone Scoop doesn't mention Windows Phone 7:Windows Mobile 7 Windows Phone 7 Series devices.
Update: Sorry kids, we have independent confirmation: Windows Phone 7 will not support Flash at initial launch.
Of course, the "newest version of Windows Phone" is technically 6.5.3 -- a WinMo update recently announced (but hasn't shipped) and presumably still works with Flash 10.1 beta (but isn't guaranteed). And since we can't find the Adobe statement on any of its usual press channels, we can't say for sure this quote is related to Windows Mobile 7. Still, we don't doubt the accuracy of Phone Scoop so don't get your hopes up for Flash in the initial builds of"Microsoft and Adobe are working closely together. While the newest version of Windows Phone won't support Flash at initial availability, both companies are working to include a browser plug-in for the full Flash player in future versions of Windows Phone. More details will be shared at Microsoft MIX next month."
Update: Sorry kids, we have independent confirmation: Windows Phone 7 will not support Flash at initial launch.

WHOA... WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA whoa.... whoa.... whoa...... lois this isnt my batman cup
@skyblaze
seriously though.... its nothing to sweat... if adobe wont do it xda'll kick in for sure :D
@skyblaze
ahahahhaha, this one is rich....
@skyblaze I laughed my ass at that comment SkyBlaze
@skyblaze
Well at least they are working with MSFT to get Flash to the platform.
@phoenix004 I disagree
@federaly
Adobe also said they were working with Apple on an iPhone version...about a year ago now.
@skyblaze
I have to look up new memes every single day
@skyblaze I gotta say that flash as a whole is definately not stable and alot of websites problems come from poorly written flash scripts so I believe alot of mobile companies (apple, MS, etc) are starting to use the next best alternative, that is the html5.. Let's just see how this one plays out. http://bit.ly/scrutinizing-flash-on-idevices
@Patrick 2
Yeah but aside from Silver light which is more of a DevPlatform MSFT doesn't have anything against Flash like Apple with their iTunes/Quicktime/HTML5 dreams.
@skyblaze
So I guess MSFT should be bashed in the same manner as Apple? Then why so many PC fanboys here seem to not be so bothered by lack of flash on their own devices and are so quick to bash Apple's lack of flash support? haha, hypocrites.
@relinapittser
I have been using Flash for almost a decade now with zero issues. Both on Windows and OSX platforms. The "unstable" part is fud. HTML5 will also not replace Flash as there are thousands and thousands of free apps and games that are in Flash right now. Unless HTML5 has some sort of Flash emulator, there isn't any point is saying it will replace it.
@Federaly
I don't know, I'd say they're direct competitors. Web apps, video streaming, desktop apps. Sounds pretty similar to me.
@skyblaze Will it have realplayer plugin support?
@(Unverified) Are you sure you have tried Flash on OS X? Because it is horrible. It hogs system resources and makes web browsers crash all the time. It really is bad and Adobe needs to fix the problem to make a more reliable version for OS X. Even on Windows its not that great.
@Kid Red
There is a big difference between the reasons Flash isn't on the iPhone vs Windows Mobile 7. It seems Apple is refusing to let Adobe put Flash on the iPhone, whereas it looks like Adobe simply doesn't have anything ready for Windows Mobile 7.
@skyblaze
Seriously late on this one, but just read it. Hilarious. Probably my favorite Peter Quote EVER.
Initially being the key word there...The title of the article would imply that it said indefinitely.
@Nitesh well, there IS a question mark lol
@Nitesh
Engadget tries to tell us CrapPad is not alone in Flash and single tasking!
Then they drop the "initially" and try to make this equal to Apple's avoidance of flash being installed on CrapPad! While Microsoft is working with Adobe to bring new flash version to WinMo7
I start to feel disgusted at these engadget unfair advertisement games. Can someone introduce me an alternative website? I seriously think about moving.
@Nitesh
Well, now that they confirmed otherwise, I keep wondering why haven't they changed the post title (other than "updated"). I smell something fishy....
@wmac Later...
@Nitesh
I have finally decided to agree with Steve jobs here.
Adobe is LAZY. I mean WTF. Windows Mobile 6.5.3 DOESN'T HAVE FLASH YET.
Android BARELY has flash support.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE A SUPER LARGE SOFTWARE COMPANY TO MAKE A FLASH PLAYER!!
And then not only does it take forever to make one. The ones they have suck. My Flash on my laptop made my laptop overheat till the cpu turned off to save itself from playing a Tower Defense game. Twice.
@Drybones5
I wrote before that Flash 10.1 is a four year project by Adobe that will utilize the smart phone’s GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) to decode and render smooth videos, render vectors, render bitmaps, and render animations on smart phones that support Flash 10.1. In other words, Flash 10.1 performs GPU acceleration of Flash content; similar in concept to using the GPU to enhance 3D gaming performance.
This is not the sign of a lazy company to me, it is the sign of a company that has been rethinking the whole concept of Flash and rebuilding it from the ground up for a whole new generation of smart phones.
@Drybones5,
Flash 10.1 is designed to solve your problem. It is designed to offload the work from the CPU (Central Processing Unit) to the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). The CPU is very inefficient when it comes to performing certain types of graphics intensive operations. This is what Adobe has been working on, but they need the support of various manufacturers. They are getting that support from Palm, Google, Nokia, and others.
@Thinker
Why would Adobe make the version number 10.1, implying a minor update, versus Flash 11, which would imply major changes? Are you sure they're rebuilding it?
@Shadow08 Its pretty well known that 10.1 will bring GPU acceleration. Whats in a number? 10.1 could of well been 11, but that would break their regular naming scheme.
What a load of... utter...ridiculous speculation.
Just wait ONE DAY and this should be resolved.
@KennyB123 I was just thinking that as I read the article.
Why the need for so much speculation and unfounded crap.
"No Multitasking in 7!" Really?! U think MS decided to kill 7 by killing the CORE function?
"WinMo 7 will not have flash" Again. Adobe knows it has to have Flash on WinMo platform and hey it had flash on WinMo since 6.1
Just wait a day.
... Oh wait I forgot how money is made on blogs...
@KennyB123 I see me putting faith into Engadget readers (in my post below) paid off. Good job readers, good job. :)
It's not like I even expected it. Mabey from Palm or Apple, but not from WM. My hopes are not up yet though!
@Jake Root I really couldn't spell maybe right could I...
FAIL!
@keplenk
Yes... you do.
@(Unverified) Are you saying that it will be a success without flash? I'm talking out of the box here. I for one bash the iPhone for not having flash .. but common! I guess Android FTW!
Microsoft, Please!, Raise the bar!
Woah woah woah, if the rumors are true and WinMo7 will not support Flash or multitasking, this spells bad news for everyone.
Guess what? Skyfire (browser for WinMo) has supported Flash for ages. Not that hard people.
@Alex
what about the rumor part that says traditional apps wont' be compatible on winPhone7, therefore no skyfire for winPhone7 initially either
@Alex, it seems like all the reports are getting skewed.
It will have the ability to keep open multiple applications they just didn't know if it would be pausing background applications. This would imply that applications would have to have a background thread or a notification system.
And Flash won't be added at launch it is coming unlike other operating systems that have completely denied Flash on their devices.
@Alex
except Skyfire is a pile of crap.
@dansus
Skyfire is fine if you use WifI..on 3g, not so much.
@Alex
on WVGA... skyfire looks really... *really* bad....
@Alex silverlight will be on Win7 and Netflix app is already there and looks goooooood.
Win7 supports background apps and push notifications. It's up to Adobe to do Flash app. Did MS said NO? Nope they are not like Apple on this issue
How about Adobe just tells us what OS WILL get Flash?
@EGOvoruhk
My guess would be Android at some point.
@EGOvoruhk
Every OS except for the iPhone.
Windows Mobile, Android, webOS, they all will get Flash.
@EGOvoruhk Anything from WM 2002 to WM 6.5.3 all support the standalone adobe flash module, free, installable without having to "jailbreak". All you need to know is whether your version of browser supports inline, embedded flash, and whether you're smart enough to get the .cab file and single tap it on the device.
Nobody needs to jailbreak WM.
@maati That's why they wil NEVER top Apple. They cant eliminate trash software they don't think simple.
@maati Until it's actually on a device and working, and working well, it's just vaporware and speculation.
/me strokes his n900 and smiles smugly
