If you're both ready
and set, then you'll be pleased to know that Microsoft has major Windows Mobile goings-on to discuss tomorrow at 9AM ET (3PM here in Spain). What does that really mean? Well based on the
torrent of circumstantial (and
actual) evidence we've seen, it looks like the big M is set to deliver its most important piece of mobile news in years: Windows Mobile 7. Or, Windows Phone 7 Series... or whatever it is they're calling it these days. Regardless, it looks like a new era for Redmond's smartphone platform, and we'll be there covering the whole thing minute-by-minute... as only Engadget can.
If you're as curious as we are about Microsoft's plans, the event kicks off on
Monday, February 15 at the
times below.
And
here's the URL to park your browser at to see the action take place:
04:00AM - Hawaii
06:00AM - Pacific
07:00AM - Mountain
08:00AM - Central
09:00AM - Eastern
02:00PM - London
03:00PM - Paris
11:00PM - Tokyo
Comon Microsoft! This is your last chance! Don't disappoint us!
If Windows Mobile 7 isn't great I will be switching to Android. There should be a good Android phone with AT&T bands by the time my next upgrade comes around.
@Peter F
Well, 7 seems to be the lucky number for MS so we'll see....
Can't wait!
@Peter F
Totally agree. I'm setting my hopes up for disappointment though.
Can't wait either!
@Peter F
Microsoft will disappoint .. here is how:
1. They will have multiple versions, fucking up their brand.
2. The apps that come with it, like calculator, weather, and calender will look like they were coded by a freshman college student taking intro to programming. They should be investing $2 million dollars on EACH of those apps by dedicating a full-time staff of 5 people (two graphics artists with 3DS Max skills, two programmers, and a program manager) to each app. Most of their time should be spent on making it look pretty not adding features or making the UI complex. Yes that would cost $50 million in total for all the little apps but they have $40 billion dollars in cash in their bank account. The mobile live messenger app needs about $300 million poured into it so it can support video conferencing and ease of use features. Yes it shouldn't take $300 million to add video-conferencing to an app, but we are talking about MSFT.
It'll come out that they spent $1 billion on windows phone 7 and the little apps like weather, calculator will look like they were done in one week by two freshman college students. Microsoft doesn't pay attention to details. They should have invested an $1 billion on attention to details .. it would have paid of handsomely and they'd still have $38 billion in the bank.
3. Multi-tasking will not be supported, and even worse switching from one app to another will be a royal pain (it will take about 5 seconds).
4. The GPS app will suck.
At the end of MWC people will be talking about what it can't do, not what it can.
@Axitaxiwaxi and you have decided this because you have seen WinMo 7 or used it for weeks on end? No, no u haven't. So just stfu and stop posting crap about something u havent seen yet.
@Axitaxiwaxi
$2 million per app? :o
It's good you aren't involved in Microsoft's decision making... or any companies' for that matter.
@Peter F
Whatever they announce, if it doesn't support multitasking, I don't care.
@Peter F lol.. Indeed yes, One of the most anticipated features for WinMo 7 is the ability for it to seamlessly use it with your ZuneHD just like iTunes. Other feasible rumors is it using TouchFlo and Sense and some dash of silverlight 3.0. For sure the MWC event will be exhilirating: http://bit.ly/winmo7-leaks-information
@Peter F i hear ya. been following ms for a long time. mobo7 needs to impress me. im already starting to like nexus. And i may switch.
In all honesty, and I mean this truthfully, but I don't remember the last time I've been so excited for a non-Xbox-related Microsoft event. 9AM can't come fast enough!
@Padilla7921
I really hope Windows Phone 7 has Mac support. I would switch over to Zune in a heartbeat, and would gladly pay $15 a month for Zune Pass. I just hope the wait for WinPho7 devices isn't long. I love me some Microsoft.
Here's to hoping the "no multitasking" rumor is false.
@BigJayDogg3
I'm actually hoping that the rumors are true. Let me explain my madness.
The rumors say that tasks will simply be "paused" in the background. The problem with WM that has had people complain for years was that people simply did not want to go and take the effort and close apps. This put great strain on resources. If you just pause applications, you greatly free up CPU load, and apps will still be on RAM to boot up quickly. This is a lot more helpful rather than just 6 apps running in the background and editors from certain news sites complaining about lag.
@BigJayDogg3
Amen my brother. Amen. I need f'ing multitasking on a damn business phone for christ sakes.
@plyr58 Not quite. Having the inbox open while browsing the internet may be useless, but listening to music while browsing the internet is not! I hope I'm wrong on this and at least let us listen to music while reading something.
my browser is locked and loaded. I won't be sleeping tonight.
No multitasking
No flash
No backwards app compatibility sans emulation
What was the purpose of the ground up build of WM7 from scratch? To eliminate multitasking and have some eye-candy?
@TareG
I wonder who's your source that confirmed all of that.
@lennie22
he's not at liberty to say. He would be killed.
@lennie22
We'll see. I don't want WM7 to fail, but it seems that its heading in that direction.
Yes, they're all rumors, but as they say at Wendy's "You know when it's real". These all sound credible.
@TareG
Can you guys give it a chance and let it mature if it really turns out to be a start from scratch? They're going after the consumers before the business people, and apparently some things were bigger priorities. Basically a ends justifies the means thing.
@TareG Well, it sounds like flash will be missing from the launch, however, that doesn't mean we shouldn't expect it. It's more probable to come to WinMo7 than the iPad, MS has a history of working with Adobe and vice versa. If they are delaying it, I have some faith that it's due to actual performance issues unlike what they say at some other company.
@TareG You don't even know how to use 'sans' correctly.
Microsoft, I seriously hope you pull this off. Your respect as a company is rising, and this can seriously promote you well.
I have faith.
Steve's face is B^U
Now's your chance MS, better make a move before Google takes over.
If any of your engineers are reading this -- we do not want you to remove multitasking, we do not want a forced appstore (marketplace is great but don't force us to only install apps from there), and we do want in browser flash, and we do want multi touch.
Existing apps for 6.5.x should have a compatibility mode (in my dreams); please do not altogether destroy previous app compatibility.
Steve is always caught making that face..
I don't see how anything can compete with the excitement of the Bada announcement today! Talk about a revolution!
ahem
Hopefully there are WM7 phones coming out earlier than very late this year. Otherwise, what's the point of demonstrating it so early?
I have long ago given up and moved on, but I'm still fascinated to see what they've come up with during all of these many many years of technological obscurity. I can't wait. It would be great to see them emerge with something even slightly competitive.
Not sure I trust Engadget on covering this one. Sorry.
@sonicyoof So true. They hate win mo with a passion only equaled by their love for all things Apple
@sonicyoof Looks like laser-wielding dinosaur-riders are back in force, sooner than expected. You can take the comments away from the troll but you can't take the troll away from the comments.
@sonicyoof LOL, somebody had to say it. xD
@sonicyoof
I suspect someone's probably already laphamized up the "WM7 sucks" post...
@Floppy
Looks like I'm a highly ranked troll. Oh snap!
But wait, is it trolling if it makes a cogent point? Or is it trolling just because it's critical? Do you think criticizing America is automatically un-patriotic?
@Vexorg
I had to look up laphamizing, but now that I know what it is, I agree.
@sonicyoof
FAKE AND GAY!!!!!
@rdearth53
Hey, look at that, a real troll!
dude, what happened to los angeles, do you guys hate us or what?
@robindahoods
oh wait, nvm, i was thinking mountain time was west, lol
@robindahoods they chose spain instead because steve ballmer can get better cocaine there
when is the htc event?
Steve looks a little hefty in that photo.
Maybe he should donate some of that flab to Jobs (:
DeanS for "body image president" in 2010.
I'm sure your are a shredded beast of a man.
@ljm
Damn it..."your are"...stupid karma
@ljm
And I'm quite sure you're the antithesis of a shredded man, considering your tart response.
(:

Sorry MS, I've already switched to Android, but I'm VERY curious to see what you've got!
@Level 5
I'm in the same boat as you. Switched to Android, love it and it will take a LOT to get me back to WinMo...but stuff like this is a good start. Let's hope they can deliver on something that will force Google and Apple to push it even harder.
@ljm : If you can make the switch to Android, I don't see why neither of you can't switch back to Windows Mobile, if WM7 is really great. I'd rather hope Microsoft can deliver on something that will push more consumers to buy their OS, rather than deliver some features that Apple or Google could pretty much copy.
