Microsoft Zune music / video services going wherever Windows Phone 7 Series goes
Hear that, globetrotters? Just months after your hopes and dreams were obliterated, we're now hearing that the Zune HD and its associated music / video services are going international, and it could happen by the end of the year. At least that's the word given to Mary Jo Foley from Casey McGee, Microsoft Senior Marketing Manager. In a recent sit-down, Casey noted that the company's Zune music / video service "would be available in all countries where Windows 7 Phones will ship," and while it has yet to make that full list of nations publicly available, we already learned that the new mobile OS has gained support from mobile operators all over Europe. Putting two and two together can be difficult at times, but hopefully we aren't reading too much into this (painfully simple) equation.

It's still a Zune. Unless they will release a software update.
@cdf74dc9
Your'e doing it wrong.
RE the article: Woo!
@cdf74dc9 And that's a GREAT thing.... Zune Software and Services are second to none.
@cdf74dc9 Whatever, dude. Apple better get to implementing that Lala subscription thing before they get dusted....
@cdf74dc9
Moron
@Ryan Deen I doubt that they have a lot of ground to cover to catch apple.
@angermeans
A comma can completely change how your sentence is read...not being a grammar nazi just wanted you to know that it can be read pro-MSFT or pro-Apple.
@cdf74dc9 why is everyone even bothering to reply to that? (yeah , i know, me too) he's not even using full sentences, let alone making an argument against the zune... lol
about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@thecybernerd
yes... finally... please, along with an update...
@thecybernerd
Please come to the land Down Under
@aeth did you see the windows phone announcement? Telstra was listed as one of their launch partners. zune Australia yeah. finally my zune hd will have access to the zune marketplace.....yeah!
@aeth
yes! MS, listen to this guy!
@aeth They announced Telstra as a partner with 7 Series, Australians rejoice!
@thecybernerd You still can't buy a Zune here in Mexico,there are a few crazy that import them, but I'm glad the Zune phone will come faster than the actual music players.
Couldn't use a Zune even if I wanted to.
I'm on a Mac, and apparently Microsoft don't want more people to use their product.
Not that I could actually consider it anyway.
@mtnDewFTW
Although 7 Series looks fantastic, I also use a Mac and I'm assuming the software will stay Windows only :(
@mtnDewFTW why would MS care about a few potential users? practically everyone uses MS OS (only ~5% uses Mac OS X)
@mtnDewFTW
Dude you can use dual-boot in your application put 35% of hard-drive for windows....then there you go windows on a mac....and then if you want mac os back restart your mac and and choose mac....
@mtnDewFTW owning 90% of the market share, and even lesser on other countries I think having a mac version not their priority.
@TheSunman89:
Yes, restart to sync, makes perfect sense!
I wonder if they'll pull a surprise move and go Zune on OS X.
That would be ... different. And MSFT's being a little different these days, aren't they?
@mikmik111 I mean higher on other countries.
@TheSunman89 But I don't want to boot into windows every time I need to sync it. That's dumb. Besides, I don't even have bootcamp set up. Nor do I care about Windows
@mtnDewFTW The Answer is Simple:
Microsoft is allergic to Apples.
@mtnDewFTW
Well then it's simple. Don't buy a WinMo 7 phone.
No one is twisting your arm. Seriously, if the ecosystem doesn't work for you, there are other options. If you like the Apple way of doing things, buy an iPhone.
@Gregorian Why would I ever get a WinMo phone?
lol if I want a phone I'll get a Android of a iPhone.
@mtnDewFTW:
It's as easy as virtualizing Windows. You'd never even have to leave your squishy comfort of Steve Job's grip on your balls - it can all be done inside OSx.
Why would Microsoft take the time to make it Mac compatible? We all know Apple users are whores who wouldn't even dream of touching it. It's better they spend their time and efforts making it absolutely amazing for us brain-using PC users.
@artissco ~5% use Mac OS X? Seriously? Mac sales have risen much faster than any PC sales.
I'm a mac user but still own a PC as well. Preference? Mac. But, this windows 7 phone is looking pretty nice! IDK, gonna have to beat my iphone. Big improvement over the horrible WinMo I have on a Tilt 2 of mine...
@mtnDewFTW
I'm sure microsoft would release mac software if people who use macs would buy a microsoft product without being told to by steve jobs... You guys loving that microsoft office stuff still, right?
The snark and condescending tones of some people here are just ridiculous.
Personally from what I've seen, I would probably love a WP7 phone, especially over an iPhone, but I am primarily a Mac user, and prefer Mac for regular computing stuff. So really without OS X Zune software and stuff, I'm feeling technologically cockblocked.
Also the "squishy" ball grip comment gave me horrible images.
Horrible horrible images.
@nubbily I stopped using Office 2 years ago.
Switched to iWork. So much better, faster, and easier.
@Jordan You are a moron and your post makes you look ignorant and young.
@Phoenix Nicely put sir.
@artissco
To be fair, that's ~5% GLOBALLY. My university has a much higher concentration of Mac users, and I think msft is targeting them more than nigeria, where Windows reigns king.
Is it possible that MS will be following the footstep of the iPod Touch and use WinPho 7 to hype up their apps store and eventually will end up as the real xbox mobile!? Exciting!!!:)
@quobeats ouch that would hurt Sony big time if they did that. They could do this very effectively in the future if these devices keep progressing at the rate they are. Only problem is getting a pocket-able gaming device with a 480x800 screen and solid controls.
Telstra was an MO partner, which means Australia is confirmed.
@ZiggyFromMars
Sweet! Cant wait for some Aussie support
@mattisdada Does it have to be with Telstra though? They are such an overpriced provider
@moggyx I can't see any reason why it would be exclusive to Telstra. Exclusivity for providers doesn't really exist in Australia...
@ZiggyFromMars
I dont know about that. Its not as written in stone as it seems to be for the US market. But theres plenty of phones that are only on one of our providers. We just dont hear any news on the other operators trying to sell that phone.
Like the HTC HD2, is only sold via Telstra.
Nice is a good piece of software, i own a iphone and my girlfriend uses a Zune HD, i installed Zune on my computer to use the software from when im not taking it on the go, its so far beyond iTunes... its also not a system hog like iTunes.
we also purchase our music through Zune because you can actually redownload music that you have purchased, unlike iTunes where if you didnt back it up, you could be screwed.
@SmilinGoat
Actually, DRM-free MP3 tracks can only be downloaded once. I just back up the music to my SkyDrive when I purchase something.
Just an FYI =D
@SmilinGoat
If you bought a song and somehow lose it and can't get it from where you bought it again without paying... why not just... um.. i know it's taboo here.. but just torrent it?
I torrent stuff all the time and don't even buy them. :P
I've been the owner of a Zune 80 for two years and as much as I love it I know that I'd love it even more with the Zune Pass. I really hope this actually happens since it's a GREAT value.
Nice! Now hopefully we'll see more of Europe's artists on the marketplace
No providers from Canada shown...
I imagine it has to do with the nasty media companies(you can't even get a chumby in Canada because of these fools)...
Don't think anything will change soon unless the politicians get their head out of their a**...all stripes of politicians up here are completely ignorant regarding media consolidation and user rights...
@lip I hope the lack of inclusion of a Canadian carrier is only because we're a small market =(
I'm more curious to know about the app integration. Will the Zune HD be able to use the same apps as a WP7 phone?
I mean, I'll be selling my Zune HD to get a WP7 phone, but I'd still like to know.
@maddawg579 You have no idea how much I hope that is true. If Zune HD can use the same apps, that'd be fantastic.
