SlingPlayer Mobile v1.2 enables 3G streaming on the iPhone, now ready for download
We knew this was coming, and sure enough, Sling hasn't kept us waiting for long. Our beloved readers have inundated our tip jar with the news that the 3G-enabled flavor of SlingPlayer Mobile is now live on the App Store, and from what we're hearing works very well. The placeshifting app will set you back just under $30, but will allow you to finally take your cable, satellite or PVR content on the move with you. We say finally, 3G streaming has been available on other phones for a while now, but good to see AT&T and company see sense and enable the goodness for the iPhone. Get downloading and commenting -- how does it compare to sliced bread?

on the ipad this might actually be cool. streaming video on at&t's network = stupid
@John Stathakis Probably, but I still wonder why Sling didn't release two applications, one for the American market and one for the Europeans counterparts.
I'm able to catch 3-5 Mbit speeds in a small Danish town with only 30.000 inhabitants.
See there's this funny thing called "the rest of the world" where we don't have AT&T, we have nice fast reliable 3G. So this is actually a pleasing update.
@John Stathakis
You're making ignorant comments. Do you realize that the bandwidth usage on Sling depends on the upstream speed of your home network? That means less than 400K for most people. Sling 3G was the victim of perception problem. Many people made false comments without owning Sling box or had any real clue about Sling. Even if you have mega bits upstream, Sling will never utilize it.
@rob230 I have 3G unrestricter on my iphone so I've been using sling over 3G (att) for a few months now (San Jose area) and it really hasn't been that bad of an experience.
I'm eagerly awaiting news that AT&T's network has exploded.
And I'm on it with a 3GS. This is just asking for problems.
@Nerdtalker i've been awaiting this news for months. my connectivity has only gotten better and better.
I've had this feature for months. Thank you 3G Unrestrictor. :)
Just what AT&T needs... NOT!
Just downloaded, and turned off my wifi on the phone... doesn't seem to work though. Throws an error saying "No Internet - Could not connect to the Sling Accounts Server. Please make sure your phone has an internet connection."
I even tried restarting the phone - same error :/
Turning WiFi back on didn't fix it either... recommends going to slingaccounts.com, but that site appears down. Sunday night maintenance?
@harley3k I have just update my two iphones and both say "no internet connection" . I can't even get on my desktop computer. This is either a bad update or the servers have crashed. I have a full set of bars on both of my Iphones.
@harley3k & @ellatee
Assuming the wifi network you're using is the same network your slingbox is on, then you'll have to log into your slingbox through the sling app on your computer and manually set it to stream outside the home network. Hope that helps
Well, I have been enjoying this "Feature" since this App came out, but it is nice to finally be told I can. :)
@Squid7085
I don't care, I'm still down voting you because of your icon.
P.s. Blackberry users have had this for years.
@Squid7085 Seriously im also voting you down because of your avatar. How dare you contribute to the Aids of the internets.
Hmm, I just downloaded the update and mine says version 1.3, not 1.2...
Looks like the account server got blasted when the update got released too, with everyone wanting to try it out on 3G... lol, guess I'll have to wait until to later to check it out :(
Same thing here! Won't even work on my home computer or laptop
@Mjadamci
It works fine on my Mac, but the client I'm running there doesn't require the stupid login to their servers like the latest windows versions..........I really hated it when they added that crap.
@harley3k
I agree that the account stuff is a bit of an annoyance, but it is also very nice to not have to remember that stupid Slingbox ID every time you add the software to a new piece of equipment, only a simple login that will then retrieve that information for you. However, I just dug up the ID from my Mac and added to my 3GS and it does work very well. Works very well over 3G, almost no noticeable loss from picture I get over wifi.
"We say finally, 3G streaming has been available on other phones for a while now"
A while being 4+ years.
I'm sold.
Who cares about the Fisher-Price phone app. Bring on the Android version!
Finally, a reason to begin to justify the £17 purchase and to plug my sling box back in.
OK, what about android and symbian and the rest of the world?
@DoctarPeppar
Symbian has supported 3G streaming for ages. I'm hoping an Android app appears soon.
@Boss Skill
Sling doesn't support SymbianS60v5 aka Symbian^1, only S60v3, aka phones from 4 years ago. ^1 has been around for more than 2 years now.
I've had slingbox & an iPhone for a while now, and have been waiting for this day patiently (and not so patiently). I downloaded the sling player app this morning. I've watched about 2hrs of tv & dvr over 3g already - this thing is awesome! So far, no problems. No skipping, no buffering, no problems whatsoever. Finally!
I've been using 3g Unrestrictor. Picture is a bit fuzzy. Will the video look better, same or worse with the new update? Anyone try it whose used both? Should I update?
@kenyandave Same question.... anyone?
Finally! I updated and it works fine like it did many years ago on my windows smartphones. Sling software automatically sends lower quality signals if that is all that is available so it won't overload AT&T's systems so people don't need to moan about customers utilizing their unlimited data which they are paying for.
Now, if only they would update their software so that they can output to pico projectors like the video and photos do I would really be happy. Although this will be a non-issue once the iPad comes out since the size of the picture on the iPad will be sufficient that I won't need to output it to the projector.

Nice, but since then Elgato gave us EyeTV 3G Live. I do own a Slingbox Solo, but I can not justify the 30 dollar price tag.
Still no 3G in Kalamazoo :(
Now I wish there were a trail version I could try out, I don't want to spend 30 dollars, then later never use it. Maybe I decide I want to return my slingplayer, I cannot get a refund for that 30 dollar app.
