Toshiba TG02 hands-on
We were all over Toshiba's drop dead thin and gorgeous TG01 last year, so naturally a chance to peek at the rumored TG02 first hand was something we couldn't pass up. Very little is new here, the touchscreen technology has seen resistive swapped with capacitive, the device has become a wee bit smaller while retaining the monster 4.1-inch display, and some 3D touches have been added to the SPB Mobile Shell-skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Like its older sibling, the handset is still a thing of beauty and the 1GHz Snapdragon does make it all purr along very nicely -- and while the UI isn't really a custom one -- we like the ability to flip between pages kinda like iPhone and Android do now. All in, this is a pretty decent effort, and removing some of the pain that was the resistive display can only make the TG02 better. Follow on for a tour and a gallery of shots.

Please,Please,Please,Please update it to WinMo7!
@JustThatNerdyGuy
this is really 'meh'.
i completely agree with NerdyGuy!
@JustThatNerdyGuy That's a sexy handset if I've ever seen one. Too bad Series 7 being announced makes any WM6.5 purchase pointless. I'll keep my Xperia X1, and at most upgrade to an X10 this year.
@Luxury Guy Nah i really wouldn't get the X10 if i was you, go for the HTC Supersonic (when it comes out)
http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/24921/htc-supersonic/
or this phone if it gets WinMo7 as i'm seriously hoping.
Sony's skin on Android looks outdated and fidgety...
@JustThatNerdyGuy Definitely, if this will have the new winphone 7 platform, I'll surely get this. And more! http://bit.ly/tosh-tg01-tg02-unleash
its really said THE WORLD didnt see capactive being the difference maker along time ago!
winmo 6 - 6.5.3 wouldnt be so dead!
but...i like this one.
This does fit the specs for WP7 right? And the 3 buttons at the bottom...
@Brent1700, it appears to be the correct specs. It's almost as if they had the WP7 spec sheet before making this and the decided they had till the holiday and would just sell it with WM6.5.
Looks like an update to WP7S is likely for both the k01 and tg01. I wonder what HTC has in store for WP7 phones.
@n8equalsd
I know, i can't wait to find out.
Not too shabby! Hey... what ever happened to the TG01c?
And... utterly pointless in the light of WP7. Seriously, who'd buy a consumer-orientated WM 6.5 phone at this point? You've got, what, a MAX of ten months until your OS is dead, no apps developed for WP7 will work on this so good freakin' luck getting anything new and cool as soon as the WP7 dev kit comes out and there's very little chance that WP7 will be made available for this handset at leat not through official channels.
Why does it look like the iPhone? What are you trying to prove Toshiba? Make you own dang original designs. Like microsoft
I know you all will hate me but the hardware looks like an iPhone.
@Scape3d No I don't hate you. It does look similar. At least you didn't say something like "This is an iPhone copy, FAIL" or something like that.
@N900
personally i think it looks like a cross between an iphone and a hd2, but meh thats just me
In light of today’s news, it seems somebody needs to say it:
Dear Windows Mobile OEMs: Please take any and all planned or soon-to-launch WM 6.5 phones out back and shoot them. Windows Phone 7 is where it’s at now.
I wonder how many people are still going to buy the current windows mobile devices . Just probably the people who dont really pay attention to the latest tech, I think.Or if Microsoft says they are going to upgrade certain devices.
btw. That phone is tres tres beau.
@Bud92
Damn I said practically what everyone else did, but I bet it will get repeated on every Windows Mobile 6.XXXX post or related post from now on to Windows Phone Series 7 Comes out.
Foes this phone have anythong better than the HTC HD2 ? it seems bigger but with a smaller screen, same-ish specs...
Didn't expect this thing to be that good.
This UI actually seems makes Win6.5 very touch friendly.
4 real, Toshiba your showing off SPB mobile like it's yours, are you serious, how the hell can any real manufacturer show this phone running a shell UI and act like it's cool. It's not cool Toshiba, not cool at all. Put a real UI on this phone and we have a winner.
@1ofdakoolkidz I found SPB even better to use than TouchFlo. Toshiba would never be able to create something like this, so good on them for licensing someone who can.
If the smartphone that you are trying to sell me isn't running a stable supported operating system like Android, WinMo7, iPhone OS, WebOS, Maemo, or Bada, please keep it to yourself.
Why put out a smartphone without a showcase OS?
One of the last usable windows mobile phones before w7 comes out and kills off all their business. Enjoy it wile you can!
When did the TGO1 even come out?
SPB Mobile Shell does have g-sensor/phone position based changes in Carousel mode if you turn it on in options. It can be a pain sometimes but you CAN do it, like the guy in the video asked about.
LOL 1 year on and i still didnt know how/where to buy a TG01. Now TG02? with that sort of support, i think i'll pass on the TG02 and whatever comes next with toshiba
and this is just spb ontop and a toshiba keyboard over 6.5 LOL
i got bored of a pretty skin real quick.... problem is no market place, no apps. = dead
cant do anything with a winmo phone, took me hours to even find a decent paint program.
windows mobile notes program is nice, but can't even transfer it over to a PC and view with any msoffice program. Ha what a joke. what are we supposed to do with the notes? just leave it on the mobile to look at?
toshiba should of saved thier money paying SPB and jsut waited on windows7
@tc4101
There's a marketplace application and a billion apps out there - all you have to do is look. Some stuff that runs on Windows CE runs on Windows mobile as well.
I bet you've never even owned a Windows Mobile/Pocket PC device, with this sort of talk.
@Mirri my point exactly, fact is 90% of users are just that, USERS, we dont want to/know/or can be fked to go about finding an application that can download applications. it should be there right off the bat.
and yeah i have owned and still have a windows mo 6.1 phone.... its been collecting dust since i switch to android. its like comparing windows 3.0 vs windows 7.
chalk and cheese
@tc4101 oh and i tried sbp 2, 3 and 3.5, meh tries hard, does a good job with the flicks and scrolling, but still has winmo 6.1 under it all.... so sometime we can flick to scroll, other times we can only use scroll bar. too inconsistent and amateurish.
LOL! This guy is definitely getting fired. You never mention competitors when demonstrating your phone. Also, the carousal thing seemed pretty point less when he pulled it down to show it on a 3D view. Once you lift your finger, it goes back to the standard view so how would I get to select the items in the back?
@Plazmic Flame there is no real usable function in the carosel, i never used it, was real pointless. just for ooohs and aaaahs to show friends, but deep down the sbp users knew it was crap heheehe.
Looks a lot better than the TG01. At least it is a good alternative to the HD2.
ugh, windows mobile 6.5
needs android/WM7
"No alarms"? This is why so many manufactures don't get why Apple does so well with their GUI. Why add clutter to the screen by telling the user that there are no alarms? Why not just remove that part altogether until there is an alarm? That way it will not only reduce clutter when there is nothing to notify the user about, it will also be more obvious when there is. It's the same story for those three faded icons in the main part of the screen.
I am male, yep just checked, so have larger fingers. (No dirty remarks please!), sorry guys but capacitive screen+winmo= PROBLEMS! You are much better with the resistive screen using the stylus provided on TG01. I like the TG01 a lot, well under WM 6.5. Don't think the 7 version is by all accounts going to be a major improvement. Why not remake the TG01 with smaller form factor, better quality as a phone (call quality is poor), lose the plastic mini USB flap, and include a radio (that can record perhaps), and MOST importantly better speaker/s!
