We got a few minutes today to check out the latest build on Notion Ink's Adam prototype that we first saw back at CES. Like we
heard a week or so ago, there will indeed be two versions of the Adam --
one which will be 12.9 mm thick and boast the
Pixel Qi 3Qi e-paper screen, and another, thinner, non-Pixel Qi screen. The thinner, lighter version will measure in at 11.6 mm thick. As far as we know, the only difference in the two Tegra-powered Adams will be the display, and we also hear they are shooting for a third quarter of 2010 launch. The prototype on hand at MWC was not working, so one of the Adam's developers was kind enough to shoot a demo video of a working unit for us (and its Flash support) -- which is after the break.
@Arebangdu I never said the tablet was going to be bad because it was made in India. I am just requesting that people have realistic expectations and not over hype the thing.
Btw I plan to buy this the day it releases just for the fact that Notion Ink is based in my home town Hyderabad, India.
@kvikramg anything compared to ipad is not overhyped :) ...n if u r a regular engadget reader..u will knw dat ppl who comment here dont create hype even if engadget itself does...dey r customers...not publishers..
@cherryboom Bang Bus? Not on the iPad you won't, lack of flash and all.
@Arebangdu
+1 to u...also adding if not been done..most of d founders r frm d top institute of india (IITs)..dey hv taken a bold step..n r in news for no bad reason..i surely hope dey succeed..if not dis time..den may b in der next revived product...
From the geek.com article, one of the intended uses is to take notes. That's my killer app.
Does anyone know if they intend the notes to be taken with a stylus, on-screen or attached keyboard?
Given that it is a capacitive screen is a stylus even efficient?
I use a Motion tablet but it is beginning to show its age and I crave the new shiney.
@redgeek They showed the onscreen keyboard in another vid, same one where they talked about using the camera to record a lecture while you mark certain points with notes. I think there was some mention of Swype too. Capacitive stylus perhaps? I swear, if they can pull this thing off it's gonna be a big slab of win.
It-which-shall-not-be-named stands in the corner weeping.
The perfect tablet, no doubt.
@TareG "Perfect?" Really? No 802.11n, max 32 GB storage, Bluetooth A2DP only? And that's just the hardware. We've seen *nothing* of the Adam user experience. I'd be careful slinging those adjectives around until we know a little bit more.
You know i just realized this thing is running Android underneath, AND it has a screen that will actually work as an ereader without killing my eyes, and it does color and flash video. Yeah...I'm officially excited.
Hellllo Nurse!!
Good thing about finding out about things late is that its always closer to the release date....I heard around $325 Is that a typo?
pretty lame hands-on
The track pad isn't really bad. Think of it as an added bonus to the touch screen
OMG ,1.3mm, that's such a deal breaker!!!
Other than the spec sheet, I haven't seen a thing on the Adam that makes it more impressive to me than the iPad. Nothing against it- the screen is very versatile in that it should have a leg up on ebook reading and battery life. But the fact that all they can show are flash videos playing or laggy fingerpainting on the device is pretty telling as to what state the product is in right now. The videos available of the much maligned "useless" iPad look 1000 times more impressive in visual quality and polish compared to what Notion Ink is showing with the Adam.
Can we actually see the Adam *do* something in front of a decent camera? Run some apps other than a web browser pointed to YouTube? Sure I can use my imagination and say "well, it's going to run Android, so it *should* do X,Y, and Z"- but Notion Ink is sure keeping all that, you know, functionality, under wraps...
@darksharpie Apple has one of the most powerful marketing machines out there, you are not seriously comparing the promotional videos for their slate and promos for an Indian product that is not even finalized yet?
Also, I'm sure we'll see more of the Adam once, you know, the actual hardware is finalized. For now, don't blame people for getting excited about its impressive specs, screen technology, open OS, actual camera, honest-to-god USB ports, HDMI and trackpad? I mean, it's LOOKS like something I could actually use, and if it's half as good as promised, and indeed does cost less than the shiny Apple, I'd fly to frakkin' Hyderabad to get one.
@RoyFokker Yeah, I realize Apple has billions of dollars to make good promo videos, but it just seems to me people are awfully impressed by the hardware of the Adam and ignoring the fact that they haven't seen much of anything software wise, and what is shown software wise looks really unpolished. Now if it's cheaper than a Kindle and really has over a day of battery life or whatever, I guess it only matters that it can display text and browse the web with flash :)
@darksharpie I'm impressed by their spirit and approach most of all. As someone elsewhere said - it seems to be a well thought out device that, unlike the "competition", doesn't dictate how you're supposed to use it, it gives you a tablet that can be whatever you want it to be. At this point, my biggest concern is build quality, and whether the "big players" will realize that there's a market for something like this out there.
@RoyFokker It's far too easy for "whatever you want it to be" to stand in for "we'll let someone else worry about the software end of things." This is some pretty impressive hardware, but the user experience is a lot more than just hardware, and we've so far seen almost nothing of the actual experience of using the Adam. You can't just slap a standard Android build on a 10" tablet and instantly have an "iPad killer," regardless of how many cameras or USB slots you've got. And unless Google relents and opens up the Android Market to non-phone devices, it's going to be pretty difficult for *anyone* to build an Android tablet that can effectively compete with the iPad.
@celticelk Isn't that just it? It's not competing with the iPad. It's not going to turn away potential iPad customers because they care about things I care about as much as I care about Apple's shiny thingy. Adam needs to be well spec'd and well made, and the rest is up to the users and devs, not the company. There's always a way when there's a good base to work on.
A blurry video.. nice.. I hate preview people ):(
That was a great trailer, thanks.
Maybe Notion Ink should make an Android phone with the Tegra 2 chip, because no-one else seems to want to
3 USB ports and HDMI....ummmm, wtf Apple? Hey Apple...APPLE!!! You know that iPad you're making?... #fixitnow
Please let me check it.
Full-color and ePaper might be the best choices.
Does anyone know the size and/or voltage of the dc jack on this? 4mm?
Looking at the pics i can only guess.
Im looking at a solar charger for my gadgets so this is very important.
Thanks
