"Just as PUMA is unlike any other sportlifestyle company out there, the PUMA PHONE is unlike any mobile phone on the market," said Jochen Zeitz, CEO of PUMA. "We want to engage with our community in a way that is consistent with everything PUMA stands for. Blending together the influences of sport, lifestyle and fashion, the PUMA PHONE reflects the joy, spontaneity and individuality that the PUMA brand is known for."
The PUMA PHONE is an active smartphone. Beyond internet, messaging, and gps localization capabilities, solar charging, video calling and Bluetooth photo sharing are all designed to make the device engaging and responding to consumers requirements. The spin and scratch music player and integrated radio make the device a connected companion. Designed around an active lifestyle, its sleek shape factor makes it a wearable fashion accessory.
Users will be guaranteed access to the PUMA WORLD in a click. A carousel-based menu on the device will allow an easy navigation through multimedia contents, enabling PUMA to aggregate rich media content services into a single intuitive and entertaining mobile user experience. Users will be able to interact with multimedia content from puma.com, download PUMA applications, and access PUMA products through mCommerce services. These connected services also enable mobile operators to create and access new channels for reaching niche communities with highly customised products and services that drive data usage.
Thierry Buffenoir, CEO, Sagem Wireless commented; "With PUMA engaged in projects such as the United Nation's Environment Programme, values such as sustainability are at the core of everything it does. From the very first concepts for the PUMA PHONE therefore, it was clear that we would need to marry a unique user experience with real technology innovation to design and develop a device that delivered on the PUMA promise. Using the device to directly connect with the PUMA community through services such as live sports feeds and mCommerce, the PUMA PHONE delivers not only a rich PUMA experience, but uses technology such as integrated solar cells to deliver it in a way that is completely consistent with PUMA's values."
The PUMA PHONE will be available through mobile network operators across greater Europe and on PUMA online store from April 2010, with international markets following.

Integrated solar cell=WIN.
I would not have to lug around my portable solar charger any longer!
@GenericMessage Agreed. I'm waiting for people to bash the camera, but I'll take a solar cell any day over a 8mp camera. Others, please, don't bash, please understand the tradeoff of costs as this will obviously add more to the cost so they have to work to minimize costs in other areas.
@juanvaldez Sagem and Puma will launch a Puma phone in the second quarter of 2010, just ahead of 2010 FIFA World Cup. the Puma phone “will embrace both sport and style with features, functions, and design that reflect the DNA of the Puma brand and encourage usage of data and commerce services. More Leaks: http://bit.ly/puma-phone-video-leaks
@GenericMessage I see 2 problems with this. 1: Solar panels need to be practically flawless or they lose their efficiency, and people will put tons of tiny scratches on it sliding it in and out of their pockets and dropping it. b: People will be keeping this in their pockets and will only be getting a charge at home where you already have a power source to charge it anyways!
Other than that, I will admit it's completely sexy and will probably sell well, but that doesn't make the solar panel any more practical.
@GenericMessage All phones should have this. It would cost a couple bucks in parts to do it.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget You cannot kill a panel. It may not be as efficient, but it's still producing a current.
@GenericMessage
You'll be standing in the sun for a minute.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget Yes, you were making a general comment, but you didn't really respond well to the OP that others (the community, based on "highly ranked") seem to support as well. He carries around a solar charger, meaning he wont have this in his pocket the same way he wouldn't have the solar charger in his pocket. Try to use your imagination. Probably more important point than what you make, IMO, is how this will feel if you pick it out of the sun. Will it be hot and make you not want to touch it? Perhaps bluetooth or a headset will make that less an issue, but it could also make it less internet friendly or something else.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
Guessing by the "sporty" nature they reference to, most people will have this on a arm-band (also mentioned). It will probably be pointed so the back is facing outwards.
I dunno bout you, but I do most of my running outside.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
how about when in the car. set in on the dash or something and let it charge away. in anybodys car, without a charger
hardware is wow, whats the os its running?
@unwynd This reminds me of the Samsung Blue Earth phone. http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/samsung-blue-earth-finally-gets-a-hands-on-treatment/
@donv69 yup, but this looks way cooler or hotter!
Sport jizz
I love Puma! That hardware looks hot. As others have asked, what OS is this beauty running?
@Scape3d
I'm going to say android. Look at the "197messages powered by the sun"
That looks like the notification shade on android, especially at the bottom that looks like the bottom of the shade, and the message count is technically a notification.
Here's hoping.
Is this phone made by the same people that make sneakers and athletic clothing? That's some aggressive branching out. I hope they're not thinking about selling this phone at Modells.
The shape looks like the old Neonode phone.
What a smart looking little phone!
isnt Puma the opposite of Cougar as in a hot milf to a hot dilf?
The hardware actually looks quite average by today's standards (apart from the solar cell). Since when was a QVGA screen suitable for a new phone these days? It should be minimum VGA.
Iove Puma. Hopefully this phone will come to the states but I have a feeling it will probably be three to four hundred unlocked.
That's nice, but I'm going to wait for the LA Gear phone.
is it made with bits of real Puma?
It does say T-mobile up in the corner..
hmm, interesting. the form factor is nice, the solar is a plus. since this is sports-oriented, i'm guessing the music player should be decent, and SHOULD feature dedicated hardware control buttons. 3.2mp camera, if well designed, is more than enough to take crisp 1024x768 pics at the very least, which is more than good enough for facebook/twitter/what have you.
it looks like the pre without the athletes foot
i would've been truly stoked if it was a Troops phone.
Click below and start your amazement early.

Would be nice to see all the popular phone makers mimic the ideas of this phone.
I don't know if anyone else worked about PUMA, but they are a horrible oranization towards their employees. Their district managers are patethic and they have idiotic policies and procedures. That's just my persepctjve on PUMA and why I would never support them again as in terms of buying this phone or clothes, shoes, or anything PUMA related.
I like it! Now when are we gonna get it in America?
It's so funny that a sporting/apparel company like Puma understands asthetics even as they apply to electronics, but companies whose bread and butter it is like Motorola and RIM are either unintentionally or willfully ignorant. Luckily for Motorola they advertise well and make good partnerships, while RIM is just the entrenched dinosaur ala Microsoft.
Now if only this had a bigger screen and ran webos... If only...
@indyraider I'm with ya
slick!
I would buy this
adorable! this is an iphone killer for sure...someone show it to ballmer already, he needs a lesson in that department
Oh, I can tell how young you guys at engadget are..
TheI PET commodore was a green screen.
There is nothing I wish to do more with my cell phone than to leave it out in the sun, facing down!
