T-Mobile launching 21Mbps webConnect Rocket, HTC HD2 next month
During Deutsche Telekom's press conference this morning at MWC, Cole Brodman -- T-Mobile USA's CTO -- went on record with the news that it'll be launching its first 21Mbps HSPA+ USB modem next month across the country, the webConnect Rocket. Of course, there isn't a lot of live 21Mbps footprint in T-Mobile's network right now -- in fact, only Philly is fully operational -- but there should be plenty more cities from coast to coast where you can enjoy DSL-shaming wireless speeds later this year. That might not be the most exciting news, though: Brodman also finally fessed up to the HD2 (unbranded version pictured above), which will be exclusive to T-Mobile in the US. It's arguably pretty bad timing in light of the Windows Phone 7 Series announcement yesterday, but a huge win nonetheless -- the phone is a legitimate beast. Like the webConnect Rocket, it'll be hitting in March, though exact dates and prices for either have yet to be revealed.
Update: T-Mobile had previously hinted that there's be some surprised in store for the US release of the HD2, and indeed, there are; it's got Blockbuster On Demand integrated for downloading movies directly to the device, a Barnes & Noble eReader app for enjoying the Nook's digital library right on the phone, and -- for some reason we don't fully appreciate -- Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen bundled on the included microSD. Full PR after the break -- and reader Qasim points out that T-Mobile's HD2 website is now live as well.

Still wish it ran android. Or windows 7 (mobile, phone, series) now perhaps?
@tristansq If this thing gets a winmo 7 update, I'm sold!
@misterfuzz
I've had it since last october, and as convinced reformed win mobile hater and former iPhone 3GS user, I've got two words for you: buy it.
@Plexus
I agree wholeheartedly.
@tristansq it is already confirmed that it will get a free upgrade to windows phone 7 (they call it windows mobile 7 here) when it comes out.

@tristansq
nah im good with winmo 6.5, as long as it is smooth, i love it. just wish this was available on telus
I would really like to own this Phone. I was going to get a Droid until I saw how frumpy that damn thing is, not to mention the buttons don't seem to have any action to them. Dammit. So my question is...can anybody just spit that real speak and tell me if WinMo 6.5 is really the most wretched thing ever (I'm currently on Storm 1 OS 5.0) or if it takes more tech savvy than say iPhone so a lot of people avoid it, and also...how is the Droid? Can you learn to love that VCR looking piece of Magnavox?
The giant screen sure look sweet.
I read the title thinking the HD2 would launch with 21Mbps capability and I peed a little.
After the WPhone7 announcement all these phones seem boring and old to me...
bandwidth is irrelevant after a while.. what is the ping ?
Curious what the pricing structure will be, and if they'll actually provide 20~21Mbps, or throttle it down.
If it costs $40~$45/mo for ~20Mbps, it'll be price-competitive with Comcast, but as we all know, wireless is subject to quality of signal, so that throughput will be awfully lower. If it's $30~$35/mo, it'll rip the heart out of Comcast.
I don't see why htc hd2 can't run w7, it's got the home button, start button and back button like the OS requires and it's got the cpu for it as well in snapdragon.
I'd bet my left nut that HTC will update hd2 to w7.
@nubbily
Maybe the Winmo 7 announcements ruin it for all the current Winmo phone. We feel outdated from the moment this phone releases. Oh If there were option to update Winmo version.
@nubbily
Let's hope you're got the right one here...
@nubbily
No bing button.
@nubbily u just lost ur left nut cause wp7 requires a search button
I think windows 7 update will follow soon if it isn't updated by the time of release. Thumbs up T-Mo!
Let's go!! My credit card is locked and loaded, I want one now!
If HTC doesnt XDA will ;)
That phone is sooo mine!!!
To long to release here in the states! P
Getting this phone day 1....cant wait
I want a HD2 too, however my curiousity in this post is... 21mbps sure is hot, but what's the point if yer capped at 5gb download per month? Can it be a viable single net connection, or will it, as usual, just be a backup to your home carrier who allows more download volume...
I hope this will work on the ATT network. I'm stuck in a contract with an iphone 3gs, and looking forward to having that hugh a$$ screen ... -:)
the question is: will this run with WP7?
@williamlau05
Yes, that is the question. Hardware wise the only thing its missing is the "search" key. but I would gladly put a piece of tape on the "home key" and draw a line with a circle, --o , on it so I could update it. :-)
I'm still waiting for tmobile to enable 7Mbps here. I confirmed that even though I'm in the S.F. bay area, this part of the bay is still only 1Mbps max.
Freakin' SWEET! I"ll be buying this Outright and using it alongside my beautiful Nexus One, cannot WAIT! - D
Great looking phone. Too bad T-Mobile coverage is horrid near me.
Have they fixed the Nexus One 3G issues yet?
Why is T-Mobile getting all these sweet phones? Their network coverage is a straight up joke compared to verizon or sprint. Think about it -- iphone launched, everyone complained about AT&T's 3g coverage. Nexus one launched, tons of 3g issues. Droid launched, and no one complained about ANYTHING network related. Same thing with the Pre on sprint. I use Verizon myself but seriously I would *never* go to Tmobile or AT&T -- just look at their 3g maps compared to verizon, it's not even a contest.
What are you basing that "Next Month" headline on? All I see mentioned in the press release is "this spring", which is not encouraging.
HTC HD seen at MWC running the 7 Series OS with WM6 apps. http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.winmo.nl%2Fwindows-phone-7-series-draait-op-de-htc-hd2%2F&sl=nl&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8
On the tmo HD2 page, right top right corner says 'T-mobile' and 'Windows Phone' which is the branding for Win 7. An indicator perhaps?
just got back 4rm the T-Mobile store and contract will be up just in time!.. Definitely brought on Day 1!
i believe the HD2 is supposed to b updated to wm7 later. i have a question about this. suppose i get this from t-mobile now, end my contract, and unlock it. will i be able to update it to wm7 when the update is released? or will that lock the device again? will t-mobile let me update it at all since i'll no longer be their customer?
No Transformer... and give me $10 discount
