Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 gets ported onto Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1
Not even a fortnight after we saw Android 2.0.1 slapped onto Sony Ericsson's all-but-forgotten Xperia X1, along comes a port that makes the other look like child's play. A dedicated coder over at XDA Developers has managed to stuff Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 onto an X1, and while the functionality is limited (as you'd expect), the amount of fun to be had is restrained only by your imagination (and available vacation time). Go on and peek that source link to join the discussion -- but be warned, you'll be sucking down over a gigabyte worth of data before the first installation process.

Joe Belfiore repeats, "the phone is not a PC"
@chnwa3
"...But XDA makes it one"
ahhh... the X1. HTC's durability + Sony Ericcson style. Sigh.
@YpoCaramel Helluva combination eh?
Nexus One Debian os Development:

still in progress.
I hope whoever did that had fun in the process at least...
Fortnight? I've heard many anglophiles use this.
The Nexus One is HTC's. They're answering their own phone with another of their phones?..
@EGOvoruhk
Um... what?
@Delta I was replying to someone who was deleted for spamming. He said this phone was an answer to Google's Nexus One
@TonyMontana2367 Wow, thanks...
Oh well, it was only a matter of time before someone out there beat my Palm Pre's Debian chroot. :-(

Though I've heard some brave soul made X11 work on WebOS... :)
Now if I can just convince my job to get ubuntu preinstalled on my laptop.
the Xperia X1 is the best built smartphone i have ever owned.
THis thing has drowned in pluddles multiple times, it has falled on concrete about 50+ times, its rolled down stairs, been stepped on. Yet its still going strong.
I could never imagine dropping a droid onto pavement.
Awesome, one of the key devs involved in the XDANDROID project, phhusson, gave me his Ubuntu build for Fuze. Mine boots but the touchscreen calibration is all out of whack and the keyboard is mismapped. Hopefully I can use some of this to get his build fully functional.
Can it Run (on) Touch Pro 2? :p
