Amazon is today adding BlackBerrys to its stable of Kindle-compatible devices and also taking the opportunity to remind us that it's working hard on Mac and iPad versions of its software. The app is a freebie download for Americans (sadly it's not international
just yet) and should offer the same functionality as its
PC and
iPhone brethren -- namely automatic syncing via Whispersync and what Amazon hopes will be a seamless reading experience from one device to the next. There's also an in-app book store, as well as the ability to create bookmarks and view annotations from other portable Kindle readers. Go download it at the Amazon link if you care, or move right along if you don't.
We can read a book on a 2.5 inch screen?
The future is finally here
Tamagotchi support, plz!
@camroncake There is nothing wrong with reading a book on a small screen, as long as it's convenient to "flip" the page and it happens quickly. I've been reading books on mobile devices for a decade, and I find the small "page" size actually reduces eye strain because it doesn't require your eyes to move much.
@camroncake
"We can read a book on a 2.5 inch screen?"
I take it you slept through the PDA days (my old Tungsten T3 is still ebook reader).
BTW, how exactly will the iPad part work out? Would Apple approve?
@camroncake
I read on my Touch all the time. Its much handier than reading a "real" book. real books are heavier and you need strong lighting. Now I can read on my Storm2, as well. This year we BB users will get Flash on the webkit browser. Hurray!!
Dear Amazon,
With all the tablets comming out you drop a BLACKBERRY app... You are PURE FAIL right now.
@Fanningw
Remember, There's RIM, Apple and Android. If Amazon has those three covered, they're ready to rock for the onslaught of iPad wannabes in March/April
As far as I know RIM isn't in the tablet arena and as stated in previous posts their current products are no conducive to reading. Lets split the difference and agree that kindle needs their butt in gear on an android apparently.
@Fanningw Why on earth is this fail? It's not like releasing a Blackberry app prevents them from supporting other devices. This will be great for some people. My girlfriend, an avid Kindle user and Blackberry owner, will love this. Now they just need to release an Android app.
By all means support as many platforms as possible. Please!
That's cool for Blackberry users. You what would also be cool. The Engadget app for the android platform. Im sorry, but I would really like to have it.
I can has Android app now pls?
What's with the pic of the super old blackberry?
@skatekarate
(insert sense of humour here)
(Insert low-rank worthy blackberry bashing)
@skatekarate
It's like what Engadget did to the Zune brand before the Zune HD.
@skatekarate
seriously, why didnt they use a storm.. if u wanted small screen BB then atleast the new 9700.. maybe they just hatinnnnnn
@skatekarate
I know right... That is one old blackberry. They could have shot back to 1995 if they wanted to be retro. And they didn't have to throw in a storm2, they could have used a curve and that would have been fine.
Clear hating.
*droid user here.
One of the best reasons yet to get a Storm2.
Micro Reading on a screen the size of ant nuts! Yes, welcome to 2010!
Engadget you may as well just drop this article. I own a blackberry and my first thought at this article was sweet... let me read a book 2 words at a time on this tiny @$$ screen. sounds like a real good time. And when its all over, I can sue Amazon for not warning me about the loss of eye sight that would incur from their app.
fail amazon for thinking there's a market for blackberry book reading. And fail engadget for posting this crap.
@schultz
Until you mentioned it, i hadn't thought about a blackberry market for book reading. Blackberries are meant for work minded people, who don't want to play games, browse the web, or look at videos all day. So yeah, blackberry people are prime book reader targets now that i think about it.
Reading on the S2 is a pleasure. Sorry all you haters.
I downloaded the app, but when I try to sign in with my amazon account, it says that I don't have an internet connection. Data works on all my other apps though...
Anyone else have this problem? (I'm on a Bold, by the way)
I installed the app. works great. cool thing is it syncs to the last read position of books I've been reading on my Touch. a great app for BB users.
Doesn't work on Curve 83xx. FAIL.
@meta
get a storm2. brighter screen than the Droid. as long as u don't mind pulling the battery to fix OS glitches, the phone is pretty cool.
