Nikon's 1080p CoolPix P100 superzoom up for pre-order, shipping soonish
The compact superzoom party is the place to be, and while Nikon's P100 may not be the most slinky model at soiree, it's got a great personality with its 26x zoom lens, backside-illuminated sensor, HDR functionality, and the ability to shoot H.264 video at 1080p. It's also newly available at a few different retailers for you to put your money ($399) where your mouth is, most sites listing some variation on "shipping soon." Amazon is the only one brazen enough to apply a date, but it's a rather vague and general one: three to five weeks. You can wait that long for something this good, right?

26x zoom? wow cool. hdr functionality. o come on there can't possibl.. and h.264 at 1080p?!
major drool!
Probably this is a good backup for DSLR users.
@sourav
I don't do heavy duty awesome photo taking so this will be my DSLR and I will love every pixel it creates.
@Drybones5 But this is not a "DSLR", you got the definition wrong.
On another note, the sensor size is small, so unless you are a casual photographer, you will not want to use it. I advise you to look at the entry level DSLR option, even a D3000 photo will be better than a P&S.
Although being a photo enthusiast, that was my personal opinion about P&S.
HDR built in? I've been playing with HDR for a bit, and it's fun, and the results are cool. That's cool.
Man, if it had 1080p24 and a manual focus ring, I'd be on that like brown on rice.... So close....
Ill take the cannon sx210 any day over this camera.
@jahaz118
I probably would too, but it's a completely different kind of camera! That's like saying you would take an Olympus E450 over this any day.
I've gotta say, the HD video and HDR pictures looks really cool, and two years ago, this would have been groundbreaking.
For those who are interested, a review from a romania website

Even at ISO 160, the pixel level detail is unacceptable. Too bad for the lenses, image stabilization and very good build quality.
@danielion
Or see a CNET First Look Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCSSyKuKl5M
@danielion Thanks for that link. Amazing how vague these vendors are about specs (specifically pixel dimensions and duration limits of high speed capture) and that you have to find them on some obscure website. So to save anyone else the time:
HS 120 fps: 640 x 480 pixels, 10 seconds
HS 60 fps: 1280 x 720 pixels (High Definition), 30 seconds
HS 15 fps: 1920 x 1080 pixels (full HD), 2 minutes
Forget about this product and grab the Fuji HS10 which is out next month. oh and manual focus ring included!
CNET review (and video) is here:

Waiting for more reviews other than Cnet, and also reviews of the SP-800UZ.
Um, this isn't sold by Amazon. It's sold by ButterflyPhoto. Click on the source link and see for yourself. I'm sure that 3 -5 week delivery time means absolutely nothing.
@Nitesh, I'm with you. Waiting for some reviews of the SP-800UZ and some reviews of the Fuji HS10 as well.
This is the second or third article I've read about shooting in 1080p. To my knowledge, the p, meaning progressive scan as opposed to interleaved is all about the playback method.
Hoping I don't get flamed; is saying something records @ 1080p (instead of just 1080) marketing weaselyness, or is there really something that goes on on the front end making recording 1080p different than recording 1080i?
I'm glad Nikon can bother to add 1080p video and H.264 recording to this camera, but they can't bother to add it to the D3s or D300s.
@danielsloan I guess Nikon DSLRs are more for still photographers.
Well, nice to see a compact camera that doesn't have an absurd megapixel number splashed across it. Though an absurd zoom range number is pretty much equally pointless.
When can we highlight some numbers that relate to image quality? Obviously compacts will always be handicapped by their smaller sensors, but within that limitation they could be doing much, much better than they are now in terms of IQ. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard for a respected name like Nikon to create a marketing campaign that raises awareness of IQ and builds demand for a 6-megapix compact with decent dynamic range...

There are the tech specs, in case anyone cares.
I really hate how all these high-end point & shoots still have the same tiny sensor that the low-ends have. I always thought the big selling point of these high end p&s superzooms is that it's supposed to be a camera for photo hobbyists that do not want to lug around a full dslr and camera bag. I don't know about you guys, but I would actually prefer a superzoom with minimal features and a 1"+ sensor for the same (or slightly higher) price than a fancy feature-filled superzoom with a regular 1/2.3" sensor you find in any vivitar.
I'm so sick of all this "##x Zoom" crap.
26x! WOW! Wait, 26 times what? If it's 26 x 1, that's pretty shitty zoom. If it's 26 x 10 that's incredible zoom! Give us the mm's or give us a standard measurement relative to something solid.
@dg988
4.6-120mm
Personally I find the #x system perfectly understandable, as I'm sure it makes more sense to the majority of people who don't understand the #mm system and that this camera is aimed at. Also, if you know about photography maybe you know enough to realise that 1x probably refers to a 20-35mm and can find out the actual equivalent focal length quite easily.
@dg988 I think you're overreacting a tad. A mm measurement would be nice, but you'd be safe to assume it's between 20-35 mm at its widest, don't you think? Ever seen a 1mm lens? Me neither.
no hot shoe adapter? what about mic inputs?
If it's anything like their previous generation P90, the horrible digital noise will render it useless even at low ISO's. Seriously, if you want an SLR, Nikon makes great cameras, but a large number of their point-and-shoots are worthless.
