Considering the pretty lackluster sales of the Nexus One, not really a dumb decision. It's not like they gaines any mindshare for their own company by building a Google branded device, and I doubt that Google would completely sponsor the needed R&D...
@NewL but HTC can now sell almost the same device with minor improvements. I think the press they get because its like the Nexus One is the best advertisment they can get
@sibyy I bought mine because I was already into the Android OS and owned 4 HTC handsets before this. It was a pretty easy decision as far as the OS and maker were concerned. Not sure how excited I would have been to know SE was making it, since I've never seen an SE smartphone in person...
@enjoytheride823 - I'm sure part of the reason why SE declined is that they don't do CDMA. I think their last CDMA capable phone is at least 5 years old. So, Verizon would have been out of question anyway.
@enjoytheride823 - apparently the "green moneyhat" offered by Google wasn't big enough for them to go and invest in a dying technology, plain and simple.
It's not about the size of the moneyhat, it's about the ridiculous huge size of mismanagement on the part of SE. And this isn't an isolated incident, it's merely the latest incident in a string of complete fuck ups.
I have a feeling if the phone was sitting on shelves in T-Mobile stores it probably would have sold more units.
@Newwales
It is available for shipment to only UK, Singapore, and HK internationally from the same place the US buys it at this moment. It's probably going to be released on verizon and vodaphone around that time though..
@NewL 80,000 = lackluster? For a product that was only advertised for a short time on the web before it's release, I think it did quite well. Sure, it's no apple, or you'd see tons and tons of articles about it here on Engadget.
BTW, just got my Nexus One (full price), it fucking rocks. I would buy 2 more if I had enough money. Plus the wife is trying to steal it, so guess who may be using the rest of MY tax return to get one.
That is not the problem. The problem is that the Nexus has been advertised at all, like the Droid or iPhone is, and it is not available in stores so only ppl like us who read tech site now about the Nexus One. That's the only reason the sales are soo loow.
I totally agree. Maybe from people reading this site it seems like somewhat of a faillure, but first of all it's the same price as the iPhone and, really, you have to ask yourself if the average consumer cares about openness and how fast the processor is. I'm sure the average guy would just want to stick with the iPhone since it's so familiar, not to mention it's good.
Then, I don't think that most consumers even know the phone exists. I mean, I would imagine most of them just walk into the store looking for a phone, or see what their friends have, but this phone was hardly advertised and only available through Google's store for reasons I don't quite understand.
@NewL ...you haven't been to Japan, have you? SE makes wonderful CDMA phones, just not for the US. For some reason they don't want to sell them outside Japan even though, say, the Bravia U1 + Verizon would pwn just about any other dumbphone Verizon sells.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

@NewL
Lackluster sales on Nexus One? Yeah that's especially accurate because we all know T-Mobile is a carrier capable of attracting customers like honey.
Man, if only Nexus One was going to be released in Verizon and ATT flavors... Oh wait.
@NewL but HTC can now sell almost the same device with minor improvements. I think the press they get because its like the Nexus One is the best advertisment they can get
@NewL I bought one without any thought... and was searching for a phone for months now. It was a pretty wise decision!
From my view, not a very smart move from SE.

No CDMA phone in years?
Hah.
That's nothing a nice big green moneyhat couldn't fix.

@NewL The Nexus One is currently only available in the USA, but in March it is lounched in the UK & other countrys, the sales will them increase.
