Samsung's PMA gifts: HD pocket camcorders, point-and-shoots with AMOLED screens

- New HMX-U15 ($230) and HMX-U20 ($250) 1080p HD pocket camcorders shoot H.264 and feature HDMI out, image stabilization, a 2-inch LCD, and some simple edit options. The U20 also throws in a 3x optical zoom and 10 megapixel stills, while the U15 instead takes 14 megapixel stills.
- The TL500 is a 10 megapixel camera with 24mm ultra-wide angle lens with an articulating three-inch AMOLED display, perfect for spying around the corner. It supports RAW format, shoots VGA video, and is due out for a hair less than $450.
- The 10 megapixel TL350 claims 1080p HD video recording with a maximum speed of up to 1,000 frames per second -- which invariably drops the video resolution to 138 x 78, but hey, sacrifices must be made. The three-inch AMOLED display and look for it set you back about $350.
- A pair of 12 megapixel point-and-shoots for the lower end, the waterproof AQ100 ($200) and the "scratch resistant" SL605 ($130), both with 2.7-inch LCDs and 5x optical zoom. The former shoots video in 720p and the latter just VGA.

The camcorders also include Hyper Digital Image Stabilization to help produce blur-free video and the HMX‑U20 adds even more versatility with a true 3x optical zoom. Consumers can also get creative with their video thanks to fun and unique features such as time lapse recording, which allows users to program the camcorder to record at a pre-set interval of one image every one, five, 10 or 30 seconds. Time lapse recording is especially useful for condensing extremely long events, such as rolling clouds on a sunny day, into a short, easy‑to-view video.
Easy Connectivity
The HMX-U20's and HMX-U15's built-in, swing-out style USB connection gives users the ability to forego having to always carry a separate USB cable to connect and upload footage to a computer. The built-in USB connection can also recharge the camcorder's battery, eliminating the need to transport a separate charger while on-the-go. Furthermore, the HMX-U20 and HMX-U15 offer HDMI connectivity, allowing consumers to enjoy their full HD video on their HDTV.
The HMX-U20 and HMX-U15 also feature Samsung's play‑edit‑sharing program, called intelli‑studio. Sharing is also simplified thanks to a one-touch "upload" button on the HMX-U20 and HMX-U15. When connected to a computer with an internet connection, the one-touch "upload" button links directly to popular destinations such as YouTube™, reducing the number of steps needed to upload footage to content sharing Web sites.
Designed for Portability and Comfort
The Samsung HMX-U20 and HMX-U15 are extremely portable with dimensions of just 2.1" x .61" x 4.09". In addition to their compact size, the HMX-U20 and HMX-U15 are also highlighted by a unique design that's as ergonomic as it is stylish. Designed to make the camcorders more comfortable to hold, the camcorders' bodies are angled at seven degrees which encourages a more natural grip reducing overall stress on the user's wrist and arm.

Anaheim, CA (February 20, 2010) - Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, proudly introduces the 10 mega-pixel TL500, a high-end compact digital camera designed specifically for today's advanced and enthusiast photographers. The new flagship of the company's compact digital camera family, the new TL500 incorporates a full-range of advanced features, including a high-performance imaging sensor and one of the brightest lenses ever featured on a compact camera – a 24mm ultra‑wide angle Schneider KREUZNACH, f/1.8. The TL500 will be on display during PMA 2010, February 21‑23, in the Samsung booth, #2227, in the Anaheim Convention Center.
"With the TL500, Samsung further differentiates its lineup from the competition and achieves yet another milestone in the industry," said Mr. SJ Park, CEO of Samsung Digital Imaging Company. "With ultra-wide angle capability and unparalleled speed, the TL500's lens offers a new level of versatility allowing the user to be more creative and take better pictures."
High-Quality Optics and Images
The Samsung TL500 is sure to turn heads thanks to its ultra-wide, f/1.8 Schneider lens – one of the brightest ever featured on a compact digital camera. The impressive f/1.8 lens offers photographers a wider range of aperture steps and shallow depth-of-field, giving them the ability to blur out the background of their images while maintaining focus on their subjects. The ultra-fast, f/1.8 lens also allows users to take better photos in low-light environments as more light is passed through to the new high-performance 1/1.7" CCD sensor. Larger than the sensors typically found in compact digital cameras, the TL500's 1/1.7" CCD offers unrivaled sensitivity (max ISO 3200/full-resolution). Together with Samsung's re‑engineered and fast, DRIMeIII imaging processor, the TL500 captures high-quality images, regardless of the lighting environment.
The high-end Schneider lens offers a 24mm, ultra-wide focal length and 3x optical zoom. Much wider than traditional compact cameras, the TL500's 24mm ultra-wide angle lens allows photographers to capture more of a desired scene, such as beautiful landscapes and large groups of friends or family. For blur‑free images, the TL500's lens is also paired with Samsung's Dual Image Stabilization technology.
Versatile Display Enhances the Viewing Experience
Composing and reviewing images on the TL500's three-inch, swiveling AMOLED screen is a pleasure. The rotating AMOLED display will allow photographers to precisely frame their images the way they want and shoot from just about any angle, including overhead or low‑to‑the-ground shots. Compared to the traditional TFT-LCD found on most digital cameras, the TL500's AMOLED provides users with a higher contrast ratio, deeper blacks and more accurate, vivid colors, even when viewed from an angle or in direct sunlight. The TL500's AMOLED display is also more efficient when it comes to power consumption, allowing photographers to maximize battery life and shoot longer on a single charge.
Multiple Shooting Options
The TL500 supports RAW and gives enthusiasts full control over their images thanks to its shutter‑priority, aperture‑priority and full Manual shooting modes. When using these settings, shooters can experiment with features such as slower shutter speeds and depth‑of‑field; however, for those who prefer ease-of-use over manual controls, the TL500 also offers Samsung's Smart Auto 2.0 (Still & Movie) scene recognition technology. Applicable for video recording (640x480 / 30fps / H.264) and taking digital stills, this intelligent feature analyzes the scene and then automatically selects the appropriate settings for the best results possible. Using this mode requires minimal effort and does not sacrifice image quality for simple operation.

@pday
sure, full hd, but what's the bitrate?
@indeed
Hmmm, I don't know about the bitrate, nor about the optics, compression efficiency, or overall video quality. It's getting better though(I hope)! :)
@pday
hope it's good too. I'd like to get a nice P&S (cause I can't carry the dslr with me all the time) and this one looks great (at least on paper)!
hmmm but I'll probably wait for the Canon G12. I would've bought the G11 but no HD video is a bummer even though the SD on it looks pretty good.
Why does the cheaper of the two take greater megapixel stills?
@Edmunn
Because an optical zoom is more expensive than a bigger sensor. It's substantially more useful too, especially on a camcorder.
@Edmunn
Larger sensor and less pixels on the higher end models translate to much bigger photosites, which means better image quality and low light performance (less noise at high ISO).
AMOLED on a camera? What happens if you take pictures outdoors?
Screen filter that allows for out door viewing, or wait for a Super AMOLED screen? But, the TL500 does have a flip and twist screen so that could help?
Image shown is TL500, probably could be Panasonic LX3 killer.
@Radukk
I still have my fingers crossed for a LX4 (or LX5 is you believe the rumours about them missing a number) to be announced at PMA. But yeah, if that doesn't appear I'll be looking at the TL500 once reviews start to appear.
@funkstar
Agreed
@Radukk
I know, looks awesome, but VGA video?!?!
@funkstar
the number 4 is a bad luck number in Japanese culture (similar to 13 in western society). Most firms usually skip it in model numbering.
@Radukk
I agree. The TL500 is a pleasant surprise. It looks pretty good in terms of specs. I'll wait for the reviews though.
If only the TL500 had the video modes of the TL350 with that lovely F1.8 lens. Now *that* would make me giddy!
@funkstar
I'd ditch the articulated screen and just ask for the new daylight-conquering super amoled display instead. That paired with the TL350's fps capture rate (I hope it's adjustable) would make it an excellent portable solution for filming action.
@horchata Never use an articulating screen so I couldn't say if it was a good or bad thing. I do like to shoot at unusual angles, especially from above, so I like the idea of them.
1k frames per second? Holy crap! O_O. I'm sitting here reading 1080 p and expecting 1080p24/30 but I see 1080p1000 =O.
@MostAmazing
Unfortunately 1,000FPS is at a resolution of 138x78 not 1080P
@Chromium I know but, 1k frames is still crazy lol
TL500 = S90 killer? I'd love to see a review here.
what's the widest aperture on the TL350? on the SL605?
Is it true the TL500, "a high-end compact digital camera designed specifically for today's advanced and enthusiast photographers" with "a full-range of advanced features" lacks an optical viewfinder?
i can't find answers to these questions from the specs in the pressers, answers that are pertinent to two different camera searches by family members.
@rtdunham The LX3 doesn't have an optical viewfinder either. If it's important to you, you can do what some people do and add an external VF (the Cosina-Voightlander ones are pretty good) to the hotshoe.
@yslee
am in to understand there are aftermarket optical viewfinders, like the one you mention, that will work with any camera with a hot shoe?
right now, my nikon p6000 seems like a good alternative: it's a step behind, with f2.7 and 28mm instead of 24, but it's got an optical viewfinder built in and GPS. Not a shabby feature set. I'm eyes-open for something better (wider and faster, maybe greater x zoom, too) We want it all, don't we!
That f/1.8 on the TL500 is interesting, but let's hope it's fixed and not variable. I've seen far too many marketing ploys in the point and shoot category lately.
@ArcticK You mean f/1.8 throughout the zoom range? Is that possible? The front of the TL500 says 1: 1.8 - 2.4 so I suppose it runs up to f/2.4 at the tele end - still v good compared to most.
@e1212 Indeed. Looks like this camera might have some serious low-light performance - we'll see.
@ArcticK Look at the picture. You can read right of the front of the lens that it's 1.8-2.4
idk about the other cameras but TL500 is tha sex
Looking at the TL500 and even the Canon S90 specs, one must admit that the Panasonic LX3 is one hell of a camera.
The camera that was launched in 2008 yet it has:
- 24mm Wide Angle f/2.0 Lecia lens
- 720 HD video
- Sensor size of 1/1.63-inch. (larger than S90 and TL500)
- Hot-shoe
I have been shooting with it for 18 months and a terrific "backup" for my Canon 5D Mark II .
@jackleboul
It's a pretty awesome camera and has stood the test of time. Specs wise, this camera doesn't seem that much better. Waiting to see what's in store with the LX4...
@michaelwub The LX3 is a hell of a camera. I love it even more now that Adobe and Apple have decided to support the RAW files. I think the 16:9 aspect wide angle is a dream to shoot with, especially wide open at night for quick landscape shots.
One small fact is that the pixel density of the LX3 is slightly higher (meaning smaller pixels) than the 1/1.7 sensor (on the TL500 and G11) with a 10mp because the LX3 is actually closer to 12mp sensor on the 1/1.63 but because it crops the sensor for the different aspect ratios, the highest size we get is 10mp at the 4:3 ratio. This means a very slight (almost irrelevant) theoretical improvement in dynamic range and low-light performance when compared to the TL500. But, we'll see how long it takes Adobe to support the TL500's RAW files. Since this isn't Canon or Nikon, they aren't probably in a rush.
Me want
The tl350 is one sexy looking camera though. Love the design.
Ugh, I just got an S90 to complement my 7D. Let's hope I didn't make a mistake.
Awww.. I just bought an S90 too! Wider, faster, hot shoe and it has a grip - Canon.. sad, sad, sad!
AMOLED's aren't very good in the sun, plus there is no viewfinder...The two problems together make a bigger one.
F 1.8!? That's pretty good! I like where the portable camera market is going! A little bit ago, it was starting to go off track. A bunch of companies were going for the "small, cute, and a bunch of MP." I hope these can ditch megapixels for a high quality, portable, photographic experience.
Now you gotta admit, that TL500 looks pretty sweet.
@soren121
Indeed. I bought a G10 on looks and if this is priced well enough, I may have to do the same with this one.
I've got too many cameras really, but I can't help buying cheap ones!
Does anyone have any idea of the shutter speed range of this camera? Would be nice to have a 15-30s shutter to go with the large aperture size...
