HTC Desire ROM shoehorns HTC Sense and Flash 10.1 onto the Nexus One
Want some of that colorful, homescreen-juggling, Android 2.1 Sense UI that HTC has prepped for the HTC Desire? Well, the previously promised hacked ROM is ready for your Nexus One's consumption. It's in alpha right now, so install at your own risk, and does indeed support Flash 10.1, so also beware of the risk of browsing the real internet. What more danger, excitement, and grassroots handset support could you possibly want out of life? Hit up the source link for the full instructions, video of the ROM in action is after the break.

Awesome. Thank god it didn't turn out like those leaked concept photos.
@aeth
is he in a rainforest?
@aeth
It's a really good thing it didn't. That would of been a step back instead of forward. However, after 7 Series, this looks too glossy for me.
@aeth
Concept of what? A phone with flash. BTW he sucks at Bloons.
I have it loaded right now and works great. I'll probably stick to new versions of this ROM from now on instead of using the stock N1 image.
i was able to watch the Office on Hulu using wifi, pretty sweet!
@aeth
This is amazing! I've been considering converting over to Android since my contract is up soon. I'm sold on almost everything.
One question though: my Windows Mobile device can do GoToMyPC. Was wondering if there was anything for Android short of using a VNC.
@aeth
Awesome is right.. up and running on my N1 and I can switch between launchers if I get HOME sick (vanilla home sick) .. pun intended.
I switch back and fourth with the touch of a button. and ported the 3d gallery along with desktop clock for my dock. No need to go back to vanilla roms now. I already have it anyway!
@TonyMontana2367 I love dedicated keys, and I really love when they’re not touch keys but real physical press and click keys. Touch is great for a lot of things and very flexible, but not for every single function. I also like a dedicated volume control and a dedicated power/lock button. I just don’t see any possible negatives to having those. If you want to duplicate those functions with touch as well, that’s fine, but give me my buttons.
Hopefully this one can live up to the expectation of the users: Updates: http://bit.ly/htc-desire-trail-of-updates
But still I have a desire for the HTC desire over Nexus
@emanas
That's the only reason I did'nt get a N1 to substitute my beloved Hero.
If the Desire's voice interface works decently I'll finally be able to use only one phone instead of having to carry the Hero (because of its android apps and versatility) and the HD2 because of its functional,( XDA dev.'s released) voice dialing function and top notch screen, essential for sat nav.
@emanas I bought my N1 because i needed a phone right away my iphone was tearing apart at the seams, and i would buy it again because i don't want to wait 6 months for a phone that's only slightly better than mine. Also the only problem i have with the desire is the aluminum it scratches way to easy with the N1 the teflon coating keeps it from scratching.
@emanas Yes to the keyboard and Snapdragon, no to the larger screen. As long as the screen is WVGA, it can be less than 3" for all I care. Larger screens eat more battery, and when you enlarge the screen without enlarging the resolution, the image becomes less sharp. No thanks. Can't wait!
I likes.
Hmmm.... This isn't all good. I prefer the vanilla Android 2.1 (dots, preview windows of all desktops, apps button, live wallpapers) over Sense UI, but I'd like to have Sense's widgets, if possible...
As for Flash 10.1: LOVE IT!!!
So yeah... give me the Nexus One with Sense's widgets and Flash 10.1
@TareG
Now that I've seen the video, I take it back. I love the thumbnails view of all desktops to the small preview windows....
But I liked the app screen animations (zoom and fade in and out, 3D scrolling...etc)
@TareG I completely agree. *nods***
@TareG I've used the desire rom for a day now. It has live wallpapers. Flash, however, is just HTC's Flash Lite. It is compatible with flash 10.1, but doesn't utilize hardware acceleration. It is rather unusable for viewing video, playback is choppy.
@mikend
Well, again another reason to wait for a Tegra 2 Android. Hardware-acceleration is necessary for a smooth lag-free flash experience. Youtube HD has been demoed playing like silk on Tegra 2 devices.
@TareG
I prefer the N1 and now love the fact that I can jump back and fourth between vanilla/sense/ and other custom roms. The time to root is now!
@TareG
tegra 2 is ages away, its no use waiting for it to be in your next phone, maybe in your phone after that!
i think tegra 1 has been skipped entirely by phone manufacturers, maybe the power of the Zune HD will open their eyes :-D
How does the Flash install handle mouseover activity, right click, etc?
@TareG The changes to Android's framework are so extensive that porting over such parts of Sense UI to stock Android would be almost impossible without source code.
Things like the keyboard can simply be ripped and installed, though, with little modification.
@TareG
I have run the Desire Rom for a few ours, I didn´t find any bug problem with it but I flashed back as I didn´t like the sense ui; I much prefer my (pimped up) nexus .
Yeah, the article should be updated to inform readers that this is not Flash 10.1...
I believe it is Flash Lite 4 or 3.1..
I wonder what they'll price this phone at, considering it is the exact same as a nexus one I would think it would be cheaper. If I could buy it unlocked for $450 I'd think about it, but I really doubt they'll go that low on it. I'm surprised they even released this considering it will cannibalize nexus one sales.
@nickyP google never expected to sell too many n1s anyway, so its cool
@nickyP
Wait I don't understand your logic. Why would it be cheaper and not more expensive? I think that it should actually cost more since it has an optical trackpad, and more importantly because it has Sense UI.
Of course it's lacking that second microphone, but besides that I figure they would charge more since it has Sense UI since they do all the testing for the phone. I mean if they sold phones with Sense UI at prices lower than phones without them, why would they even have it?
Too bad this would not work with the droid. I really want flash on the go!
@Drama21 Do you think it would work with a droid with 2.1?
@malibumac I do know for sure but since the article did noy mention the droid I am only assuming.
@Drama21
somewhere (probably xda-developers) someone is trying to hack this on to the droid.
A little TOO risky to try on my Beautiful Ne×us One, plus I prefer the stock Android 2.1 as well.
@SParklingCYaNide
agreed, i can see loads of flickering in the browser too so i am not sure if its 100% safe
It's not THAT risky, just be careful when flashing the SPL
@SParklingCYaNide there was an spl? i dont think there was lol there is no flickering like there was in the video it works just fine
Why void warranty to get a mediocre UI when there are insane UIs like Tat cascades coming out for all Android devices? Plus... I'm sure someone will release a sense like UI for Android.
@nubbily
Tat is just concept ideas, it's never coming out, nor has any of their previous concepts.
'...and does indeed support Flash 10.1, so also beware of the risk of browsing the real internet.'
Are you for real? Was there really any need for that backhanded injection of FUD?
@LRawlins I take this as sarcasm, not FUD, perhaps I'm wrong. I took it as a backhanded slap at Apple, and since everyone calls engadget apple-fanboys, I find it to at least be pushing the envelope in the right direction (consumer-choice, or make fun of those that deny us choice). So, FUD to you, /s to me...potato, potato (prolly not)?
@TareG
it's sarcasm. Paul Miller is no fanboy. I think you guys should get out of the house more, maybe talking to real people will help you understand nuances better.
@BogdanGC "He insulted my phone, oh I'm so torn up!"
@BogdanGC
Oups didn't realize it was Paul Miller. Ur right I have the most respect for him...
Unfortunately, seeing the app screen scroll oh-so-choppingly, as well as the flash game play a little bit too slow, I think I'll wait for a Tegra 2 Android.... with HW-accelerated flash, smooth OpenGL ES 2.0, and uncompromised battery life.
I hope NVIDIA pulls their acts together. They already gathered some terrible rep after failing to ship Tegra 1 early enough before it became outdated by Snapdragon.
@TareG
Tegra is an entire SoC. The Snapdragon is just a single ARM processor.
@TareG
This is not the final sofware, just a leak from an non optimized version.
Just wait for the final product to make such conclusions.
@TareG
Looks like Flash Lite 4 only.
@TareG Waiting for Tegra 2 and Fermi. Seems like it'll never come.
This is NOT Flash 10.1 yet !
In this leak, there is only Flash Lite 4.
@513
True. HTC said that at the press conference.
@513 That's a huge disappointment. I was wondering why he didn't demo hulu in the video.
