Android-powered GoGear Connect PMP debuted in new, Godzilla-sized form factor
We're used to seeing some ho-hum units with the GoGear name, so we were pleasantly surprised to hear (well, read) that Philips was getting much more ambitious for its upcoming GoGear Connect line of PMPs. Plans are said to include the Android 2.1 OS, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and extensive skinning that plays up the media player / navigation device angle. Although there's no cellular connectivity herein, there is a speaker and mic for some VoIP action, alongside haptic feedback for the touchscreen display, a memory card slot, rear-facing camera of unknown resolution, up to 64GB storage, and DivX/XviD support. Neither price nor release date has been confirmed (though Q3 2010 is a possibility, according to SlashGear). Indeed, we haven't even seen one of the units, even in prototype form -- but there is an amusing King Kong-scale device running the OS in the video demonstration, which means they definitely have designs on the monster movie demographic. Check it out after the break.

Look at that screen bezel!

Guess I'll have to bring out my hammer pants

@ElCapitan Worse than the iPad!!! The iPad does rock though....
@PlatinumSkeet And I thought it was the Dell Mini 5....
@ElCapitan Is that a PMP in your pocket?, or...well you know the rest.
Worse, look at the annoying UI animation. After you select something, you get to wait for it and its subcategories to lethargically scroll into place.
Animation in a UI is almost never a good idea.
@Jacob Apple Geek
I think the only alternative plausible to an ipod at this point is the zune hd(which I own) but even that isn't doing well compared to the ipod... and it's services are being ported to wp7. Is there really much profit in making "the other mp3player" now adays?
I'M IN!!!!
I've them all. Every conceived pmp on the market. Philips may not have been the most innovative. but they where always the ones with the most ease of use. I can't wait.
I've them all = I've had them all.
I've decided. If I'm ever going to get an Android device, it needs to have Plants vs Zombies. Got it for my iPod touch 1G last night. It's decided. If Popcap made PvZ for Android, I'm switchin over. (Assuming an awesome non-phone, non-huge-tablet, comes along)
If it requires a finger touch at such a scale what will it require when it's down to proper size.
mkv/rmvb support for any android device?
GODZIILLLAAAAAAA!!!!!!
Once, just -once-, I'd like to see a new device with the battery and wifi symbol not in this standard format. How about a flower where more petals = more wifi? A sun with rays that go out as your percentage runs out, kind of like a clock? Anything but this 90's gui? Bleh.
@Mmmm Donuts Then do it? It's Android. It's open source! Make your own custom rom! Name it..... Flower Power! Or... Sunshine Lollipops and, Rainbows!
My daughters would love the monster sized device as a television. Of course my 6 year old would make sure we would never watch anything longer than 5 minutes without touching the screen.
@ty1911
It looks like a microwave to me.
The lower right of the display in the pic immediately reminded me of an 80's acoustic torture method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFacWGBJ_cs
A "portable" media player for Charles Atlas maybe.
That picture is missing something crucial.... 100,000 Japanese running from it and a building falling over.
Looks like a Zune 30 with a smaller control pad, and touch features that should have been.
For a second there I thought Google was gonna "pull an Pad" on us...
@Bratan You must be a comedian. A lame one at that.
Interesting that Phillips of all PMP makers are jumping on the Android bandwagon. Viliv also have the P3, although its still debatable whether or not they'll make it a phone or just a PMP. Anyway I'll be looking forward to see this in normal size.
Flavor Flav must will love it.
@armus360 Correction. Flavor Flav will love it.
"...and it's GOJIRA you moron..."
as said to Charles Caiman, WIDF anchor.
technology keeps getting smaller, any smaller and I'll be able to fit it in the trunk of a car
Pay for it with a giant prize check.
