Apple serves up 10 billionth iTune, smiles all the way to the bank
Whether you love it or loathe it, there is now no way to deny the spectacular success of Apple's iTunes Store. The proprietary digital media player, organizer and salesperson has just now recorded its 10 billionth song download, marking a truly unique achievement in the still nascent world of digital distribution. Congratulations to Apple, whose response has been to thank you all for spending so much cash and making El Steve look like the techno pied piper. Hit the source link to find out what the most downloaded songs of "all time" were... you might not be surprised by the top three, but you should definitely be horrified.

You've hit the nail on the head; not surprised, but utterly horrified. We should all learn to stop being so surprised by popular culture and its putrid taste in music. And movies. And cuisine. And...
It's kinda like McDonalds now. For every song downloaded, ten people go to McDonalds. I'm not sure which is sadder.
Black eyed-peas suck and lack originality. There is no substance to their songs and they really cant sing very well. It looks as if someone took a few barely talented people and made them look querky and gave them lots of cover songs to ruin and drill into your mind.

BAUGH ENGADGET HAS FOILED MY PLANS.

Woo! Party In the USA!
@Gregorian Funny, but I'm going to have to downrank you in hopes that nobody else is reminded of this aural torture ;-)
@AckbarsFist
And its gonna be a goood day~~~~
with Duder Mifflin and Sabr-ay~~~
Am I the only one that finds irony in them using an HTC sense-esq way to show it?
Is it just me or is the whole way Apple 'talks' beginning to get a little sickening?
I hate all 20 of those songs and the band/"artist" that made them. I was hoping to see at least a couple in there by decent musicians and NO Black Eyed Peas do not count.
Let me guess, there will be an 'Ad' for that.
Basically what this article is trying to say, is Congratulations Apple on Ripping Consumers off.
@Mivanx77
Oh you think Apple sets prices? It must be nice to be so naive.
@Jack
If you think the Record Industry wanted 99 cent songs, you must be delusional.
@daytripper
I get the impression that you two are both singing from the same hymn sheet. I dread to think how much the recording industry would like Apple to charge if they could have their way...
Give me the cash and not a crappy gift certificate.
I bet Amazon can get there in 6 months.
I wonder how many of those 10 billion songs were actually sales versus free downloads.
on a side note...bit torrents just announced their 10 gazillionth download
People still buy music? And at $1.29.
Next you're going to tell me people still use Limewire. HA!
@choffy21
Yes, apparently there are a lot of noobs around here that pay for song. And the worst part is, the catalog of Itunes is tiny in comparison with the "alternate market".
@choffy21
Yeah stealing is awesome. It feels so good to not pay the artists for stealing the music they created so you can listen to it.
@choffy21
Nope, Demonoid FLAC FTW!
@Jack
Is it lonely up there on your iPedestal?
@Jack Way to assume. I do torrent, but if I like the album, I do buy it. If the artist doesn't have any money, then they don't get to make more music. I'll support an artist I like, but I'm not going to judge an album by 12 :30 second sample clips.
@choffy21
It's nice that you buy the album but I'd make a sizable bet that you are in the minority of the illegal download community. While I can see logic in some of the arguments put forwards that BitTorrent downloads of music is OK, I just do not believe that there is a net positive benefit except to the person doing the downloading.
Wow. What a group of out of touch idiots here! I guess this is the crowd that the zune appeals to. What a bunch of losers. LOL.
When will my favorite torrent site (kidding! I'm against piracy) have a 10,000,000,000th song torrented announcement. Ha, as if that didn't happen ages ago...
@NCase
Why don't you announce that you don't have any principles, or money? Chicks love that.
@Wesscoast
I may lack money, but I have morals.
How can it still be that an mp3 Album costs more than a CD?
@sven gadget
People like paying more for shitty quality?
@sven gadget because people still pay for it. if they charged $5 a song and people still bought them why wouldn't they charge that? and people are lazy as sin and would rather pay more to download shittier quality music than to go find an album at a store.
i also find it rather interesting that everyone says torrents and piracy are hurting artists but nobody seems to care that iTunes is killing your local record store.
I love to buy hard copies too but buying digital songs will save lots of planet's resources so I choose itunes.
#2. is by far the worst...only thing good that came out of it was the spoof of Cartman singing it on Southpark.
@Plazmic Flame haha, i love that when cartman sings poker face!
Wtf? I though don't stop believing was the number 1 song on itunes, and how did gaga get that high?
Imma let you finish, but ogg is the best format of all time. The best format of all time!
I think one of the most sad things is not that apple sold 10 billion songs it is what songs made the top 10 most sold of all time. Most of the songs were released just in the like the last 2 years.
Ewww. I jsut looked at the songs and it is horrible. All 20. I take it 8 billion have been purchased by 9 year old girls.
What were the top 3?
Interesting...I wonder if they counted the 22 apps, songs, and movies that they charged me for in the past week that I neither ordered nor downloaded.
I absolutely love what Apple has done with iTunes. I certainly appreciate the arguments against it, although they do not seem to impact me, but I buy more music because of it than I ever used to before because it is so convenient. Mind you, my wife isn't impressed about that...
goes to show..... in general, you don't need to have musical talent to have a hit.
More than 50% of that list is barely distinguishable from the noise of an automated production line.

Not surprising how most of the top 20 songs on there are crap.
Now, I wonder how many of those songs were autotuned.
LOL 24 out of the 25 top songs are $1.29.
I recall Apple stating (when they announced the price structure change) that more songs would be $0.69 than $1.29. Now I understand charging $1.29 for the most popular songs, but I will be damned if I can find a song at $0.69. I wish you could "SQL" the store for 'Price=0.69'
Excuse me Black Eyed Peas, Imma let you finish, but BEYONCE HAS THE MOST DOWNLOADED SONG OF ALL TIME!!!
I know its over-used but I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought of it when she lost this one too...
