Engadget for iPhone / iPod touch 2.0.1 now available!
Hey guys, some fun news to share: Engadget for iPhone / iPod touch 2.0.1 was just approved by Apple and is now available on the App Store! The big new feature is landscape mode in article, comment, and sharing views, but we've also bumped up font sizes, made some improvements to the commenting experience, and added the ability to edit tweets directly in the app. Oh, and you can also now email photos from galleries from within the app, and customize the toolbar. Of course, that's in addition to our regular features like offline viewing, built in streaming for The Engadget Show, and in-app tip submissions -- you know, for when you see the iPhone 3GT leak out.
So what are you waiting for? You can download the app right here, or just click the image above -- if you've already got it installed the update should be waiting for you right this second. Full changelog after the break.
Once again, a big thanks to the team at AOL that makes these apps happen: Sun Sachs, Andy Averbuch, Hareesh P, Anibal Rosado, Rajesh Kumar, Rich Foster, Claudeland Louis, Mike Wolstat, Eric Wedge, Vikas B R, Milissa Tarquini, Asha Indira and Bob Gurwin. High fives all around.
P.S.- Updates for the BlackBerry and webOS apps should hit in March, and that's also when we're scheduled to launch our Android app -- stay tuned!
What's New in Version 2.0.1 of the Engadget App:
Landscape Support with bigger fonts!

@mi canuck
Try cleaning the hater spooge out of your ears, maybe you'd listen better.
can I exclude apple posts on this? :D
@SlaterGS
So can I view the source link without opening safari yet? I hate having to exit and load the page in safari just to go click the source link.
@The Dead Marxist Trio
It was a joke...
any way to force portrait mode?
@The Dead Marxist Trio - It seems to work very well with my version. I click on the link, the browser pops up, I view the site, close the browser and the Engadget app is right there were I left it. I'm using the Pre version 1.0.0.
Would you really expect a developer re-implement a browser to follow links? In fact, I'm pretty sure that Apple would block any app that re-implemented Safari functionality.
Whoa...I said to make it easier to leave a comment, and they did it! I could get used to this...I'm Steve Miller and Engadget iPhone Mobile App 2.0.1 was my idea.
...hehehe
Still no pinch to zoom on pictures in the galleries. Fail. Love this site, but its funny how engadget would complain about phones not having pinch to zoom and not implement it on there app on a phone that allows pinching. Lol
@SlaterGS Nooooo not the landscape mode, now I can't read you in my bed.
@The Dead Marxist Trio
Yes, when you click an external link, it will open in the in-app browser without leaving the app.
@choufleur47 Auto-Landscape is a pain for night reading in the bed. Tempted to upgrade though, still thinking about it.
Who sent this news in?
xD
@Sarcasme that is the single most annoying thing about my iphone. That and how warm it gets after about 30 minutes on the phone.
@homercado 100% agreed.
That said what took so long with the Android version?
@Sarcasme
i second that. please put in an option to turn off landscape mode...i wont upgrade till you do
FromDigg:
Was there something wrong with the iphone-optimized web site they were running? i.engadget.com worked great. I'd rather not use a separate app for each damned website I go to.
m.engadget.com looks like crap on an ipod touch now
Yes please. Help me exclude apple news!! I'm serious!
@highlighted RotationInhibitor is your friend
@Zer00 Then why spend your time commenting on them
No windows mobile app!? You guys...;)
@DoctarPeppar
Likely not gonna see one until later this year.
@LAY Yeah, we're probably going to hold off until Windows Phone 7 Series at this point. That's going to rule, though.
@DoctarPeppar Just use an RSS feed o.0
@ratchetnclank
Can you recommend any good free RSS apps?
The Samsung one that came with the Omnia 2 isn't that great.
@DoctarPeppar http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2311639 RSS Hub. It's pretty decent.
@Nilay Patel So you update the iPhone/iPod touch app, but still won't release one for the Storm1/2...your true colors are really showing....
@MONKEY Storm support is coming, man. Take a chillaxation.
@MONKEY Lol, don't take it so personally. There's no app for S^1 or Android either. Hug? =)
@Nilay Patel sorry, it's just us storm owners get shafted with everything. maybe it's because it's such a sucky phone
@Nilay Patel A symbian app won't be too much to ask, I hope...
There are tonnes of us outside the US reading Engadget on Symbian v3 and v5 phones. This would totally make our lives easier.
@Nilay Patel What about a Symbian app? I know you consider it as the stupid child of OS's, but, if I'm not mistaken, you yourselves pointed out recently how we still live in a world half dominated (almost) by symbian smartphones.
So, again, what about a symbian app?
Hows about updating the Blackberry app? It is terrible! Navigation is all messed up and hard to move around. Btw, running Sprint Tour with Official 5.0 OS.
@yankees368
How about reading? like, you know, the post...
@ArhcAngel
Oops. I must have missed that tiny two line note in the middle of the iPhone post. My bad.
I'll be excited when said Android app is released. Nothing until then.
@tylerscochran
After all this time, I sure hope there is a Widget that comes in 4x4, 2x4 and 1x4. That would be awesome and so worth the wait.
@tylerscochran What could have taken them so long?
@tylerscochran still waiting for the android app as well :(
@tylerscochran
Android app! Yeah!!!!!......... wait........
Why are we last to get an app?
DOH!!!
@tylerscochran
Their app must be in the approval queue....oh wait.
@davidnjessicacruz
We're not quite last. They don't plan on making a WinMo app until, uh, WinPho comes out.
@JXCGunrunna Just to voice this again :) I have been a patient Android user waiting and if you could add a widget of some kind with your Android App that would be just splendid.
PS. If you need to hire a few new Android devs seeing as it seems to be taking awhile you should ask around ;) hehe
A*N*D*R*O*I*D please
@tylerscochran
Nowadays even android and blackberry apps need to be approved by Apple before hitting the market. That's why it'll take an eternity.
It's kind of ridiculous that Nilay is jumping on every "Where's X-version" post and not touching the Android ones with a 10 foot pole.
There's no approval process for the store, so WHAT has taken so long Engadget? Don't get me wrong, I'm psyched there's a release date for it, but geez, come on. Don't stick your heads in the sand, tell us what's been holding it up. I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but, I mean... we've noticed the delay.
@tylerscochran
apparently you all haven't heard of News Room, it's Engadget + all other RSS's you ever wanted to read, and you can even make any number of RSS feeds you have into a widget! BAM!
@GN1
Not Free = No Thanks.
You guys were late on your own app news?
@jfally We knew about this yesterday, but didn't want to do a post without an update on Android, so we were waiting on confirming the timline with our devs.
@Nilay Patel
wait so...it is an android app coming?
YAY! :)
