iPhone 3GS mod ditches plastic cover in favor of titanium vestment (updated)
Engadget reader Martin Schrotz is a man after our own hearts. He's taken the editors' choice for best smartphone of 2009 and tricked it out with a handsome new back cover made out of titanium. Not sufficiently pleased with the plastic casing provided by Apple, Martin opened up his favorite CAD program and refashioned his phone into the much hardier and indubitably more awesome machine you see before you. The new backing is built out of a titanium alloy that allows RF waves through and therefore requires no plastic parts to let the wireless communications flow. Check out the gallery for more before hitting the link below to bug Martin to provide you with a video or a price estimate.
Update: We now have exclusive video of the device as well, so head on over here to see it making a call.

Looks good. That's what it's about right?
If I would get an Iphone , this is how it should be !
This is phenomenal, anything other than plastic really is though. Plastic is one of the main reason's why I haven't upgraded my orginal iPhone. Hopefully Apple will change their mind now, well they better.
@derekdevine
to me, the appeal of the black plastic iPhones is that it looks like Japanese black lacquered wood.
I love this, but I really wish the apple logo was smaller, more subtle etc, looks like he changed the silencer switch as well, I actually prefer it! If he sold this, I'd gladly buy it, although I can't quite see what he's done with the sim card slot
Oh Engadget, you and your fake stories. In addition to Gizmodo's explanation, you can clearly see that those pictures are renders.
@AltDimension
Clearly
@AltDimension
Or not. This thing is for real with intermediate CNC masks to prove it.
it looks heavy
@B2barb
Titanium weighs more than Aluminum, but is much stronger. It is possible to replace aluminum with titanium and end up with a lighter product because of how much less titanium you need to retain the strength properties; and it sure won't crack after a few minor drops like the plastic back of an iphone.
@Kid Red He replaced all plastic, including the buttons. In the case of the silent switch it seems he did change its function direction.
SOOOO....HOW MUCH AND WHERE DO I SEND MY HARD EARNED CASH?????!!!!
oh please lemme have the CAD files!!!
When and how much?!?!
Apple seriously need to change the hardware design of the iPhone or it's going to be a big flop
Am I wrong or has he also modified the ringer swithch as per pictures included in this post?
That is perhaps the hottest thing I've seen ever.
